you basically ever want it to spend to buy out stocks of alchemy vendors and other poo poo for craft, but thats 100% unnecessary to do the game on any difficulty in any way

The game also reeks of cut content, I can't tell if I haven't unlocked the quests yet ( I haven't touched the thieves or dark brotherhood yet) but so many locations seem like they were meant to have more but are just lacking a quest related to them.

The expansions came with whatever late-to-the-party Steam sale version I got and will probably play them at some point. I wish the combat was more Shadow-of-Mordor but still it was pretty good and the story/world is really, really good.

Pulisic is the real deal, I mean obviously he's not going to be a Messi or Ronaldo but he can actually operate in crowded spaces and scares defenders when he runs at them, which the US has almost zero of historically.

The radiant quest system neccesitated having a lot of locations without stuff in them, to the games detriment imo

I liked the radiant quests until I realized that they are all truely the same. I remember I found the "unusual gem" on a radiant quest and thought it was awesome and some neat detail. Then a started finding them in every other cave.

And things like Rorikstead that was clearly meant to have a quest. Or the named dead mages with unique items that don't actually relate to any quest that ended up in the game.

Thieves guild is basically the best story told in the entire game.

After Witcher 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn, RPGS like Skyrim really show their lack of imagination.

skyrim is also half a decade older than either of them, there's nothing surprising in the fact that newer games are better

there is a lot of it, like actual civil war system and whatnot, but a lot of it just didnt make it past the cut. they still have more or less complete contents included with the game as shipped so there are mods that attempt to restore these things

actual civil war system?

I didn't even realize that there was supposed to be a war going on until I joined the legion. Like there are no signs of it.

yes and no, since its more about where those 2 games are better. No one else had done as good of a job, but that's because the industry has let dudes like that blizzard dude decide what makes a good story forever. I really hope more games learn from W3 and HZD and make games with an interesting protagonist and well written, interesting stories.

It's nice not dealing with schlock on my sunday afternoon.

from that perspective sure, full agreement here

one could say that chris metzen did corrupt the video game story telling :classiclol:

my pet peeve for some game story would be a kylo ren style villain, i think that he is an interesting character

Agree with both of you, but also: in W3 you're a bit more on rails, which makes the storytelling more doable.

That's the one of the big lessons, to me at least. I would much rather see more people try and write an actual character that the player can guide within some parameters, than full fledged blank slates. It just leads to a more cohesive story, and less goofy poo poo.

Mass Effect 2 was a pretty drat good balance where you could be male or female, but the player still had some limits on them. I get why allowing full character creation can be a selling point for some people, especially women who are tired of "action man Mk1642" as the main character, but hopefully HZD helps spark some further protagonists that aren't "angry white man."

Yeah, I like super-open games (CK2, Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld) that let just sort of mini-stories emerge from the mechanics but super-open games with over-arching stories is a tough putt.

I agree, a Skyrim type game that ignores a main plot entirely, and just dumps the player in an open world they can alter, would be fun. I love TES games, I have played every one since Daggerfall, but gently caress me Skyrim's story was bad and just unsatisfying.

It's also a pet peeve of mine that we have all this detailed lore and poo poo but all of the player characters fall into a memory hole where no one knows their names or even what gender they were.

fallout 4's biggest problems imo were that the settlement system (while fun) was totally detached from the rest of the game, and also bethesda was stuck too deeply in the lore so they had to do dumb fallouty poo poo like super mutants in boston and prewar skeletons just lying around untouched for 200 years

all the factions in fo4 are bad. the main plot is garbage nonsense. downtown boston is kind of cool though, way better than the mall from fo3, and the glowing wasteland area was cool. power armor as a vehicle instead of wearable outfit was a great idea

its so obvious they ran out of time with trying to integrate the settlement system with the rest of the game because you're supposed to use that to spread the minutemen across the land which owns and i totally would have been all over the "restoration of civil society" minigame except that preston is a giant horrible nerd and the mechanics simply aren't there without mods

I think Fallout 4's biggest issue is that it has too much faith in its main storyline, which is very poorly written. And even more damning, from a game perspective, it tries to frame too many early story missions as urgent while the rest of the game is designed to be an open exploration and side quest banquet. Games like Witcher 3 and Baldur's Gate 2 do that way better, by giving in-story reasons for you to do sidequests, so that your gameplay and story feel less disjointed.

Also, the best game is Spec-Ops:The Line because it allows me to shoot virtual Americans is a very deep meditation on the cost of war and soooo deep man.
