I know Dino Crisis was also Capcom so maybe they just didn't want to create their own competition in the genre but games like Dino Crisis and Parasite Eve really were a fair bit better than RE back then.

There was a rumor back then that Capcom got a bunch of staff sniped by Square to help make Parasite Eve. I have no idea how much credence to give it.

What's not a rumor is Noboru Sugimura dying suddenly in 2005. Between that and Mikami's perfectionism, RE wasn't quite as flexible a franchise as some of the others that took inspiration from it, and it makes a lot of the wheel-spinning between RE3 and RE4 make more sense in retrospect.

I would love to see RE8 (or an RE7 spinoff like CVX if you want) return to the swamp, that was a really cool setting compared to faux-gothic mansions and offices.

i enjoyed re7 quite a bit but how well they integrated the sprawling bizarre mansion into an actually believable fashion was cute. like the RE2 police station will be remembered fondly forever but if they tried to do such a thing in a first person slightly more realistic style i think they'd really struggle to hit the right tone, but a weather torn bayou sprawling expanse is totally believable.

unfortunately i think if they just go straight back to the swamp it might come off as a derivative lazy attempt at a cash in

But imagine the goo has spread through the crocs and wildlife and started to seep into the sleepy bayou town nearby, so it's like RE4's village with RE7 intensity.

Either way I hope there's another first person game coming, but not necessarily REmake 2.

IIRC Squares Parasite Eve licence ran out so you don't have to worry, there is never going to be another PE game. Unless someone gets a licence from the original author but the book really has nothing to do with what people liked about the games.

I seem to recall something about a specific writer / director / whatever at Square who had a ton of seniority being the key guy behind both The Third Birthday and Other M, and how Aya and Samus both wound up the way they did almost entirely because he has a massive, massive fetish for overwhelmingly submissive women.

I would LIKE to believe it was mostly just his influence and the rest of the team was not as incompetent as all that.

Unless Yoshio Sakamoto (Metroid's series producer and main man behind most things in Other M) has some ties to Square somehow, I don't see how that's possibly true.

Way back in an RE thread I made some joke about a game where Billy is fighting BOWs under a false identity but is also involved in a game of cat-and-mouse with Josh, who’s after him for allegedly killing all those African villagers.

Suplexing? You better bet your rear end there’s suplexing! And I guess it would all come to a head in an infected zoo, where you get to punch a zombie gorilla to death.

There’s been like three games set on a ship (if we can count Gaiden). Can’t the bad guys mix it up a little and use a candy factory as a front? (Bungles QTE prompt, Josh gets knocked into a vat of boiling sugar)

You know how BOWs are weapons? I mean it's right in the name. I think it would be fun if in some game you could be using them instead of being attacked by them, like if at some point your character has to go through an area absolutely crowded with zombies/ganados/whatever, so you program a tyrant to "escort you" and take care of some of the enemies.

All I'm saying is that I think Tyrants were absolutely sick, that Nemesis was the best monster the series ever had and that Capcom would do well to bring them back.

Outbreak File #2 had a (sadly) short section just like this, and it was rad having Mr. X there kicking Hunter rear end.

If it had been refined some more and was released in consoles with better online support, the Outbreak series could've been amazing.

That section was amazing purely because the Tyrant would have continued to be obedient had that dickhead scientist not kept threatening to blow it up.

My favorite part of that was finally seeing how a regular, sane Umbrella employee would react to meeting one of Umbrella's usual brand of psychos:

:(: ...I don't like having the Tyrant out, but I guess we need it to survive.
:science:: Don't worry, I planted a little something to keep it under control. If it tries anything, I'll explode it to ground zombie meat.

Reminds me of one of the least talked about parts of Outbreak Files #1 and 2: Every character could wear a myriad of alternate skins. One set of them was an over-sized colored stick figure for everyone.

I spent a lot of time on Outbreak File #2 online, as janky as it was. The stick-figure alternates from the first game were considered unsporting for speed runs, because most of them had an invisible, unadvertised passive damage multiplier attached. Mark's stick-figure alternate had something like +30% damage/health/speed and was unequivocally the best character in the game.

If they put an internal team to work on it, what gamestyle would be a good fit for a modern Outbreak? Fixed camera angles + tank controls like REmake, over-the-shoulder camera with shooting and melee like Revelations 1 & 2, or first person exploration like RE7?

Something I like in Outbreak was that each scenario lasts just long enough to be enjoyable and doesn't become tiring. Plus each character has unique moves, stats and playstyles for you to mess around with.

Almost every single alt. skin had a damage modifier, not just them, and it wasn't always a positive one. As an example, Mr. Gold and Mr. Red did 1.5x damage while Mr. Blue had 0.8x.

i think rev 1/2 style would fit outbreak the best, although its inextricably tied to the fixed camera angle in my memories
