Also, in the "olden times" young children died because they drank caustic soda (lye). The most common cause was that the adults stored small amounts of lye in empty soda bottles in washing rooms or saunas, usually for easier access. Also, lye cannot eat itself out of a glass bottle, and it is very efficient cleaning agent, but also loving irritating and toxic stuff to handle, and its easy to pour it from a small soda bottle which also by itself is easily replaceable. So basically this Tide Pod -thing is just the loving millenials reinventing or stealing the "drink the cleaning agent"-game from the millenials. Laundry pods, as previously noted, already taste loving awful. Antifreeze on the other hand is apparently delicious and the big problem was little kids drinking it (and since it tasted great you didn't always get the screaming baby alarm that something was wrong) and disgruntled spouses mixing it in their partner's drink to poison them. I'm not aware of people drinking it to get hosed up, but that's why industrial ethanol is denatured.

Anti-freeze apparently tastes extremely sweet, and is extremely toxic, so you will die, and it won't be pleasant if you don't get treated. I did read that the best way to counteract drinking anti-freeze is to drink a shitload of vodka, because they're apparently very similar.

Anti-freeze tastes so good apparently, that cats and dogs will lap up puddles of it if they find it on the ground, then their owners have to deal with the aftermath of their insides kind of liquefying. Not to mention the people who deliberately pour it out for animals to drink. E: Vet practices will often have a bottle of vodka in their fridges to deal with this. We had apple flavoured for a long time, for some reason.

I did read that the best way to counteract drinking anti-freeze is to drink a shitload of vodka, because they're apparently very similar. The main component in anti-freeze is ethylene glycol which is a toxic alcohol. It is metabolized by the same enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) that ethanol is. The breakdown products eventually form calcium oxalate crystals that precipitate in the tissue, especially kidney tissues, causing tissue damage. The reason ethanol works as an antidote is it competitively occupies all the alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes and the ethylene glycol is excreted in other ways.

Aramoro posted:Getting drunk to cure methanol poisoning is an extremely legit treatment. It is, but antifreeze poisoning isn't because of methanol. Ethylene glycol gets metabolized by your alcohol dehydrogenase to glycoaldehyde, which gets metabolized by your aldehyde dehydrogenase to glycolic acid, which starts killing your kidneys and causing acidosis, and the glycolic acid eventually starts oxidizing and turning into oxalic acid, which binds up with calcium and starts precipitating out as calcium oxalate, and having these little crystals start forming in your brain and lungs and things is pretty bad for you. Alcohol is used to treat ethylene glycol poisoning because it competes preferentially for the alcohol dehydrogenase. If all the alcohol dehydrogenase is bound up turning ethanol into acetaldehyde, the ethylene glycol won't get turned into glycolic acid, and they can just keep you alive through the acidosis until you piss out the remaining glycol. The methanol treatment works for the same reason. Methanol + alcohol dehydrogenase = formaldehyde, that + adehyde dehydrogenase = formic acid, formic acid shuts down your citric acid cycle and you die. Bind up the alcohol dehydrogenase with ethanol, the methanol just gets excreted by your kidneys without being turned into toxic metabolites.
