I lost to you once, monster. I shall not lose again! Die now, that our future can live!
What I’m getting at, the part that is ~mysterious~, is the “come back” bit.

Given what we have in TLJ, this is just yet another example where the script of TFA is made retroactively dumber.

She says both. What Teek posted is an exact quote. Maz says there’s someone who still could [come back]. This comes to nothing.

Wasn't she talking about Finn, who had just left, but was about to come back? As in, focus on the new family you have before it breaks apart on you?

Guess I'll have to disagree with you there. I think it's one of the lines which makes even more sense in hindsight after watching TLJ, it's given more weight in that it's Rey beginning to admit to the truth which she finally fully acknowledges in TLJ to Kylo.

thrawn527 posted:

Here's the full scene, at least accordingly to IMDB:

TFA posted:

Maz Kanata: Dear child. I see your eyes. *You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku... they're never coming back... But... there's someone who still could.*

Rey: Luke.

Maz Kanata: *The belonging you seek is not behind you... it is ahead. I am no Jedi, but I know the Force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes... Feel it... The light... it's always been there. It will guide you.* The saber. Take it.

Rey: I'm never touching that thing again. I don't want any part of this.

The dialogue between the stars are lines which are directly/indirectly referenced by things Rey herself later says in TLJ. She's no one, she needs to move on and find belonging, she's felt something inside and she doesn't know what to do with it. The Force is guiding her to Luke, who will set her on the path to becoming the first of the new Jedi.

No, she was talking about Luke. The line immediately following is this:

REY: (tearfully) Luke.

And then if Maz was trying to make a point about how Rey has already found her new family, she could have corrected Rey. Instead she continues:

MAZ: “The belonging you seek is not behind you. It is ahead.”

And then she goes into her spiel about the Force. The scene says that whomever Rey is specifically waiting for on Jakku will never come back, but Luke could come back to her, and Rey needs to open herself up to the Force so that it will guide her. Maz also tells her she needs to take Luke’s saber.

I would agree were it not for the bit about Luke coming back, which makes no sense.

I think you're subconsciously appending "...to you" to the "someone still could [come back]" line

Luke has still gone away somewhere he can "come back" from, and Maz realized that Rey might be the answer. Not because Luke is a figure from her past, but because she obviously has the force and her destiny has already led her to the Resistance and the lightsaber.

I appreciate that as much as she thinks "the only fight" is the struggle "against the dark side," she's too occupied with a union dispute to actually contribute anything herself.

Man the Maz cameo in TLJ was the worst. "You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku [your parents]... they're never coming back [because they're dead]" seems like the most obvious reading to me, and Kylo says basically the same thing more explicitly in TLJ. Luke could still come back and help the galaxy, but as established by the previous sentence he is not Rey's dad.

These may be crummy 4th-generation screen shots, but the shape she sees last doesn't really resemble her head that much, does it?

They should of just hooked up the laser door ram from the planet on the front ship or just build a death star laser on a space battleship. They clearly are lacking long range weaponry.

In Japan, you can pick between Light and Dark Side screenings.

quote:

The two versions are delivered in the same theaters and fans have been split 50-50 on whether to experience the film from the light or dark side. The vibrations, tilts, wind, fog, strobe and other effects enhance differing aspects of the onscreen action for the light and dark side of the theaters. Light saber battles create differing reverb effects for the two sides, while the atmosphere will differ for scenes on First Order ships and Rebel bases.
