If Oprah lost a billion dollars as president *none* of them would be saying it was because she was so honest and noble she was sacrificing her wealth for the country. They'd be rolling on the ground laughing.

There's kind of a raw, scary truth about American politics that I've noticed as a Canadian. Democrats/left-wingers in general are held to a standard an order of magnitude higher than Republicans, and are crucified harder and longer for failing to meet those standards. It's quite unlike what I see in other parliamentary multi-party democracies. It's not like scandals don't stick for long times in Canada (see Fast Ferries and the NDP in BC), but it just doesn't seem to be as one side and extreme.

I don't know if Republican messaging is that good, Democratic messaging is that bad, or what. I get why the messaging disparity exists in policy- progressive policies are often nuanced and counterintuitive. That problem exists in Canada too. But when it comes to negative campaigning and scandals, that poo poo slides off Republicans easier than Democrats. And it's not like they even try, it just does. Perhaps Americans really enjoy the status quo and progressivism is an 'evil you don't know' compared to the evil you do?

A little from column A and a little from column B. The only thing that really upsets this is the Streisand Effect: there were a dozen "tell all" books and movies about Obama and his response was nooooooothing. Just quiet. As it should be. One guy writes one book bad mouthing Trump and EVERYONE knows about it because Trump gives him free ad time. Which is SUPER ironic coming from the "master manipulator" who got the press to give him plenty of free ads by breathlessly covering his antics. Huh: maybe he's not a "Master Manipulator" and just a big dumb pissbaby who got very lucky that his big dumb pissbaby antics worked out like that when he needed them because he was too loving cheap to spend money on his own campaign (a very obvious scam that he's run before in business: never send your own money if you can help it, still reap all the rewards).

Democrats still haven't caught on that you need some charisma, that voters want PASSION, the last three losing Democratic Presidential nominees were described as "cold" and "robotic", KKKillary, KKKerry, and GGGore, while the last two winners were described as "compassionate" and "caring": Obama and Clinton. Being able to articulate what they want to do is totally inconsequential to winning and the problem is that being "the people who can articulate what they want to do" is how the Democrats want to be defined but that's not what whips up the votes. Being passionate about your idiocy to the point of shouting will always get you more votes than a carefully researched and 100% correct professionally put together Powerpoint presentation which is why hucksters and used care salesmen win.

This is super broad strokes, so grain of salt and all, but there is the following.

Democrats generally tend to hold their own accountable for scandals because the base doesn't tolerate a lot of the kinds of things that can lead to major scandals. So when a D fucks up big enougj they get it from every direction and don't have much, if anyone, there to defend them.

Republicans generally are able to excuse bad behavior in their ranks with ${excuses} and will circle the wagon to protect their own. This comes from a much stronger party discipline, I'd wager in large part because they are not a large group, im numbers, compared to Democrats, so enforcing ideological alignment is easier.

There are limits to this though. Al Franken and Roy Moore being the most recent. Roy Moore's bad behavior was so bad that it actually stressed party discipline in protecting him, though Republican's amazing propaganda campaign did well with their base to fud the issue.

I'm pretty sure the 1b that Trump 'lost' was just because the increased scrutiny had made it obvious he had been puffing his value, and it got recalculated to reflect that. He didn't even lose anything, people just adjusted how full of poo poo he is.

Yes but then Trump math is that if he gets investors to fork up 20 million and he then takes a loan of 80 million to buy buildings worth 100 million then his net worth now increased by 100 million.

Real math put his net worth at something like 500 million.

I never forgave them for ending Undetaker's Wrestlemania streak, everything else I could have grudgingly dealt with or ignored, but, they should have at least let him have the streak.
Or at the very absolute least, let someone who could actually use the win break it, not Brock "I am human viagra to Vince McMahon" Lesnar.
No, gently caress that, on second thought, the streak should have just never been broken.

Anyways, enough of a derail.
