On one hand Torrance is like a marginally less poo poo Daisley so I'm fine him being shat upon, on the other when you see the Labour video on the NHS which was genuinely emotional and very power this is just unbelievably petty and lame. Who even knows who Torrance is but people who already pay too much attention to politics? What's the Scotsman's circulation these days, 8?

It's pretty childish but when your achievements are as uninspiring as the SNP's in government I suppose it can't be very easy.

I don't see you have to have any idea who Torrance is for the ad to work. Almost everyone knows someone who bangs on about politics at parties, it works on that level.

I think any party hosted by nationalists with SNP balloons and Nicola Sturgeon in attendance is bound to turn political at some point tbf.

It's not about Twitter or cybernats, which is the source of the majority of that vitriol, it's about Labour's national message. In other words, what they are saying to the press, in Parliament and on the doorsteps. Despite the new leadership, the party still seems unable to articulate a positive, independent vision. The latest public services debate is a good example of this. Don't hold that kind of debate if you don't have a tax policy, particularly if one of your central criticisms of the SNP over the last two years was the lack of a tax policy.

The problem for Labour is that they need something more credible than the "SNP are turbocharging austerity". Of course, developing a new message means admitting that the our present circumstances largely stem from the UK's terrible fiscal policy over the last decade, which leads back to the constitutional argument. Labour needs a proper answer to this, not a retreat into the Murdo Fraser/Kevin Hague fantasy-land where austerity is treated as nothing more than SNP "grievance politics."

Leonard seems to be moving broadly in the right direction, but he has been personally mediocre during FMQs (fair enough, he's new and might improve) and appointed a complete joke to finance. Not to mention Baillie is still, inexplicably, in the frame on economy. These are key positions in any front bench, but especially in a party that is supposed to be talking about redistribution, class and renewing public services. I'm sympathetic. He doesn't have many faces to choose from. But maybe Labour's left would have more leadership material if their colleagues hadn't spent so long alienating the rest of the extra-parliamentary and (now, largely) pro-independence left?

I guess what I was getting at is not so much that Scottish labour are great (and while I think a lot of the criticism is overblown, I'll readily admit there's much to criticise), but rather that there's a big difference between the critique you've posted here and the flat "gently caress Scottish labour they're just cunts" (and equally "gently caress the snp theyre just cunts" although frankly that one is far less common despite what coohoolin says) that's happens even in discursive spaces (like here, like the pub, like your mates flat, or wherever else you get you political chat fix) where sticking rigidly to a party line is downright loving weird.

Agree with all of this.

When I first saw the video I thought it was pretty lacklustre, but it's had significant coverage (for a ppb, almost thought it was going to displace Leonards big push in Dundee today which would have been hilarious) thanks to the self-importance of the Scottish press. In particular, right-wing opinion columnists love to pretend they are strident, risk-taking journalists while they list Conservative party talking points and huff their own farts. They are due a gentle ribbing.

The National has led today on an idea for a ‘Celtic Bridge’ linking Ireland to Scotland.

Do we think this is a good idea? What are the chances of it being built? Personally I’d love to get the train to Dublin.

Just for the sake of comparison, although I'm sure everyone here guessed already, the national poured scorn on Johnson's idea of a channel bridge. I'm sure this current story is based on rigorously researched journalism however, and isn't just some dumb thing that caused wild hilarity and back patting in the national's office

As nice as it'd be to have a tunnel or bridge between both islands, there are many engineering challenges that stand in the way. For the Scotland-NI proposal, in particular, there's this in particular. Because of this, a longer tunnel or bridge between Wales and the Irish Republic might actually be simpler, and therefore cheaper.

You can look at the Channel Tunnel to get an idea of how long it'd take before you can begin amortizing the construction costs. Keep in mind that the Channel Tunnel has a lot more traffic than an Irish junction would get, too.

I've not done it for many a year, and I should try and correct that next year, but when I was wee, we went to my grandparents house for Burns night, and I typically recited the Address to the Haggis.

Burns was bi, afaik, but the point is that poem was written as a political stance in favour of women's rights, a polemical paean that the clergy pushing against women's issues would have found quite distasteful.

There's also this one.

While Europe's eye is fix'd on mighty things,
The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings;
While quacks of State must each produce his plan,
And even children lisp the Rights of Man;
Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,
The Rights of Woman merit some attention.

Well, yeah, and I'm pretty sceptical, but I'd be legit interested in the source since I'm into 18th century literature way more than is healthy. Burns wasn't my topic and there's tons about him and his works I don't know, but unless there's a letter along the lines of "remember that time we shagged Davey?" reconstructing sexuality is going to be, at best, problematic and speculative. Curious to know where Coohoolin got it from though
