From the subtle movie moments thread:Patattack posted:More Scott Pilgrim subtlety: in one panel of the original comic, Young Neil is reading a webcomic on his computer. In the movie, when duplicating that scene, they went to the trouble of matching the exact comic strip (it's Achewood, naturally)

Does anyone still have the fan comic of the guys catching up at Mr. Bear's funeral? I forgot the author, and without that I guess google doesn't know what I'm talking about.

I thought the Penny story was the worst... It really feels like the point where he completely lost touch with the characters' voices.

Didn't she like, instantly vanish forever the moment the story was over and a new story moved in?

"forever" being a couple months until the strip ended.

The strip with the Freekeh-Chia read like somebody miserably failing to ape Onstad's writing style. I feel like Roast Beef's final blog was a pretty satisfactory send-off for the strip; for whatever reason, it reminds me of the December portion of Spenser's Shepherde's Calendar.

The penny arc was something I was really excited for at the beginning, and soured on pretty fast. The initial callback was cool, but most of the characters’ dialogue got really bad in a “trying too hard” way before long.

Any kind of series will become self-parodic if it goes on too long; I'm glad Achewood ended before it introduced Cousin Oliver jumping over a shark and all that.

Halloween Jack posted:Candidly, it was hard to read Onstad's very pessimistic view of relationships while I was going through the situations he was describing. (We don't know exactly how autobiographical it was, but I'm going to guess "very.") look if you were forced to cold suck a peter in the back of a van you would be pessimistic too

Achewood ends with Phillipe staring at a snowglobe while his father sits reading a newspaper and his mother makes porkchops with the rice. Pan out to see toys sitting on a box. Three cats, a tiger, a bear and a robot. Two squirrels peek in from the windowsill
