The "unscripted" Chevy suburban driver's joke was the best part of that episode but that was definitely an unmarked mesa county, co sheriff. He had the undercover suburban, the k9s and was wearing a sheriff dept T-shirt. I assume he either happened by or was present because they had a filming permit.

Seriously the best line yet though.

Yeah, they're finding their way. When they went to the new driver with no schtick or joke, that was a good sign. "Look, we can't force the old jokes back in, just drop all jokes and see what happens later, let new stuff find its way through over time". And the trips and challenges only really work when there's a sense of purpose there, it really did this time. Historical stuff such as those old new racers or the Lancia thing has loads and loads of potential, it means challenges, cocking about, romanticism, nostalgia, story telling, races etc etc, all of with having some sense of purpose behind it. What was it really like to drive F1 in the early 1970s? How did they do Monte Carlo in the 1920s? What's the deal with Maserati? etc etc

Yeah, I've loved these last couple of history based episodes. What I would like from either TGUK season 25 or the Grand Tour is another Cheap Car challenge, the cheaper the better. Still one of my favorite segments in Top Gear history was them trying to buy cars in Miami for a thousand dollars.

Although this episode (and the Jaguar one from a couple weeks ago), especially from Richard, have featured my favorite recurring part of the cheap car challenges, the blatant, nervous lying about malfunctions.

As viewer? Sure. In terms of promotion it probably was better for getting some buzz in the country they're in. For them it's surely much easier and less stressful - Clarkson basically just must go past his gate house to get to the tent.

It's actually a deleted scene in The Mist. They decided to go with a slightly less grim ending for the theatrical release.

Alright, let's do this
Just caught a great little joke in the newest episode, when James says if they go over the top edge they're dead. Clarkson said "well the tree will stop us, won't it?" to which Hammond quickly said No.

He knows from experience.

The real reason he backed out was likely due to there not being a roof or a roll bar on the car.

If you went over the top of that bank at 90mph, i dont think a roof or a roll bar would do a particularly huge amount to save you.

I laughed so hard i nearly coughed up a lung when it was revealed that Richard had to get a job with jaguar to drive that thing on the roads

That's probably not the real outcome they were worried about. The real risk was losing speed mid turn and rolling down the inside.

Sometimes the script comes out as unscripted, but thats cause it really was. I want to believe that this time it was for real, mostly cause I've been caught having sexy time in the fog in a car before.

The dogging bit seemed unscripted to me. Clarksons 'normal personality' came out and seemed equal parts amused and embarrassed.

Imagine being balls deep in your partner, and someone shouting "Oh I've found a car here.. Oh it's a Toyota.."

Could also be that the couple weren't doing anything particularly nasty, that the situation was exaggerated and Clarkson's dialogue added later for fun. Scripted vs unscripted is a big grey area.

The other possibility is that production told Jaguar they wanted to take their million dollar 1-off around a disused speed track and they said "Oh, gently caress no you aren't"

I'm surprised they did it at all. No loving way would I drive a car like that on a dilapidated steep banked track, much less a freshly paved one. Also, I'm guessing that plastic window in the Aston cost about 10 bucks, so they didn't care that Jeremy cut holes in it.

Do we even know, chronologically, that this filmed bit came after Hammond's accident in the first episode?

I mean, he wrecked the car and got a fractured knee on June 10th and it was plainly hot when they were in Spain (at least before they got into the mountains.) I don't think he was even off crutches until almost September. There's no way he could have been driving that Jag around after he was injured in the crash.

Edit: I found an article saying that the Switzerland piece was the first one they filmed, so I guess it was first.
