Some Guy TT posted:All right, this is a good example. Here Holbrook is attempting to do his racism metaphor with school integration. To a white middle class generation xer (I'm assuming that's how old he is) who only knows about school integration vaguely from history class, this is rational. But right out the gate, he's making stupid assumptions- like how schools for minority students are impractical because they represent a smaller portion of the population. The 90% 10% ratio isn't 'sustainable' because the 10% predators are gonna have to eat more than nine times in a school year. We're witnessing the beginning of the end of their society's downward spiral, as the predators literally consume the rest of the population. All the while violently insisting that this is the proper course of action, and any attempts to point out how hosed up things are and fight back are the true source of society's problems. A v. good metaphor for global warming and also wealth disparity

And this is where Retail loses me every time. To get to the point of being given with your own store, you have to drink the corporate kool-aid. Store managers may privately, cautiously acknowledge that sometimes the decisions and policies of their superiors are nonsensical and dumb, but Marla's attitude in no way resembles any of the store managers I've ever worked for, even the cool ones. It's like a switch is flipped; in order to do their jobs, they HAVE to believe the nonsense they're saying. Ninety percent of Retail rings true for me, but Marla's attitude towards Stuart does not.

But right out the gate, he's making stupid assumptions- like how schools for minority students are impractical because they represent a smaller portion of the population. Schools can be whatever size. We used to have schools in tiny buildings that could only fit a dozen people at a time, for communities in the middle of nowhere with no schools. Even today there are small home schools and charter schools. So why is Holbrook making the idea of running a small school out to be such a Heraclean task? Whoa! I think you're taking his comics way too seriously. Holbrook is tackling segregation and integration in the context of his made up world and he's not doing it parallel to what happened in the US, because his strip is too lighthearted and kid friendly to really do it justice. I wouldn't be surprised if the schools combine, some idiot predator comes in and tries to screw it up but get's caught, and everything goes back to normal and we're back at the tree with the porcupine and bat and their hybrid doing cutesy things. Holbrook is not looking for historical accuracy or real portrayals of issues. He's just looking for a quick story arc for more of his animal based humor.

Art isn't created in a vacuum; Holbrook doesn't necessarily have to be intending to create a direct parallel of American segregation for his naive view of history to be reflected in what he is creating.
