Well, the thing is I don't think their brains let them see Nazis as Nazis. This rendition of fascist assholes played a good move and put themselves in the spotlight as a "free speech" movement. Conservatives latched onto that and ignore everything else like they do with literally everything else. So they don't view them as Nazis but as fellow conservatives trying to speak out of their plight against liberuls trying to shut them up and oppress them.

I think the attitude is "I, personally, am not currently wearing a swastika and gassing a Jew (I actually love Israel so I'm not a Nazi!)" so they don't consider themselves Nazis. And because I myself am not a Nazi then American conservatism can't be very close to Nazism. If it were that close I'd not support it. Only bad people support Nazis and I am not a bad person. Therefore I can't be a Nazi!

Except that the Republican platform as it stands is inherently racist they just dogwhistle it away. Then they shroud their nonsense in pretty words like, you know, the Nazis also did. The wrap voter suppression in ending voter fraud (which incidentally is practically non-existence) or wrap toxic racism in white pride. They wrap specifically targeting black people and black neighborhoods with the police as just being tough on crime. The actual Nazis aren't getting quite as much Jew hating as they'd like but the GOP is intent on loving over everybody else that isn't white so they're taking it. The only message Average Random White Voter gets is "we're just defending the white Christian way of life, honest!"

Tiberius Thyben posted:

I have lived and struggled with mental illness all my life. I've also studied history and, considering it's my field, I should think I know a little about it. I'm well aware of the long and sordid history of mental 'healthcare' and psychiatry being used as a cudgel against or justification for bias against people who have political, racial, social, or sexual views or identities that those in power disapprove of. It has happened in the past, and it still happens today.
I also know enough about psychology to know how difficult it is to diagnose someone properly even when you have had contact with them, let alone people you don't know that well. Plus, of course, the fact that obviously there are plenty of neurodivergent people that are wonderful human beings, and - even more obviously - many neurotypical people that are monstrous assholes with no place in a civilized society. Even those of us who don't seek to use psychiatry as a tool against our enemies have a tendency to try and pathologize bad behavior because it makes us feel better about ourselves and an imagined concept of universal human decency that sadly doesn't really exist.

That said, I also think that there is a serious case to be made that right wing authoritarianism represents some form of, if not mental illness, personality type or something - something far more fundamental and universal that a simple political ideology. But more to the point, there's pretty obviously something going on with Andy. There's being obtuse, being an rear end in a top hat, and then being Andy. The man either is genuinely delusional and doesn't realize how blatant his lies are, in which case he's clearly not engaging with reality in a meaningful sense and I think that's a safe criteria for 'this person is mentally unwell' or he's got literally no sense of shame or social awareness which also seems like a pretty good indicator for neurodivergence.

I mean, really, 'is significantly and substantially divorced from reality' seems like a pretty neutral and obvious definition for mental illness and it's also one that Andy seem to pass with flying colors. We're talking about a man who literally uses 'liberal' and 'conservative' as cyphers for 'bad' and 'good' and who literally thinks mathematics are part of some nefarious liberal plot.

Doesn't Cuba not have a state religion? And percentage-wise, aren't almost as much of their population athiests as the UK? For that matter, isn't Cuba a "socialist" health care system? I'm surprised Andy didn't remove Cuba from the list before putting it up.

Yeah, and Belarus is the last remaining nominally 'Stalinist' country, although a lot of that is just coasting on from the USSR.

Maybe Cuba and Belarus are on there to say that the UK is doing even worse than these terrible second-world communist countries, which is obviously because of Darwin, rather than because of almost 40 years of systemic health underfunding.

Huh, Switzerland actually does have (relatively) high rates of Creationism:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creationism_by_country posted:

A 2006 international survey found that 30% of the Swiss reject evolution, one of the highest national percentages in Europe.[54] Another survey in 2007, commissioned by the Christian organization Pro Genesis, controversially claims 80%. This resulted in schools in the Canton of Bern printing science textbooks that presented creationism as a valid alternative theory to evolution. Scientists and education experts harshly criticized the move, which quickly prompted school authorities to revise the books.[55]

I wonder what Andy would say if it was pointed out to him that Muslims make up a large chunk of the world's Creationists?

quote:

A 2007 study of religious patterns found that only 8% of Egyptians, 11% of Malaysians, 14% of Pakistanis, 16% of Indonesians, and 22% of Turks agree that Darwin's theory is probably or most certainly true, and a 2006 survey reported that about a quarter of Turkish adults agreed that human beings evolved from earlier animal species.[64]

EDIT: Okay, there's a surprisingly even-handed mention at: http://www.conservapedia.com/Creationism#Islamic_creationism

But right below that section is "New atheist Richard Dawkins on Islamic creationism and multiculturism" and I can make a pretty good guess who wrote that section. It cites Dawkins basically saying "we have a problem in schools because Muslim [British] kids don't believe evolution and the government is too PC to correct them". Okay, so which pony is Conservapedia backing in this fight? Is it "yay Muslims for being Creationists, and yay Dawkins for calling the government PC... now both of you go burn in hell"?

Norway, a liberal pro homosexual country that loves bestiality and hates god with a similar population to Houston, Texas wins the most medals at the Winter Olympics. Sports performance: Religious faith vs. atheism[54] anyone?--AdamAn (talk) 08:18, 25 February 2018 (EST)

quote:

First, please read the article Protestant cultural legacies. The effects of cultural legacies are often very longstanding (Malcolm Gladwell points this out this matter in his book Outliers). Norway has a Lutheran cultural legacy.

Second, I suspect there is a positive correlation between wealth and Olympics sports medals attainment and not only does Norway have a Protestant cultural legacy, but it has a large amount of oil wealth as well. In addition, it has been cheating in terms of its NATO obligations (which helps its economy, but hopefully President Donald J. Trump cracks down on Norway leeching off the USA in terms of its defense budget).[57]

Third, Norway is a cold country which certainly helps it in the Winter Olympics. Let's see the Norweigans compete against the more religious Kenyans in the Summer Olympics in the event of marathon running.

Fourth, let's compare apples with apples. Are religious Norweigans more athletic than nonreligious Norweigans? Given the data in the article Sports performance: Religious faith vs. atheism, I suspect that this is so.

Sweden is more liberal than Norway[58] and liberals have a greater propensity to having problems when it comes to bestiality in terms of advocating it and engaging in it (see: Liberalism and bestiality). And although Norwegians have received some bad press regarding bestiality[59], it is the more liberal Sweden that has received considerably more bad press regarding its recent past problems with bestiality (see: Bestiality and Sweden). By the way, unlike atheists, not a single prominent, Bible believing, Protestant has ever indicated that bestiality is ever morally acceptable (See: Atheism and bestiality )! I feel so sorry for Swedish poodles, horses and sheep ! If only the prominent atheists PZ Myers and Peter Singer would step up to the morality plate and indicate that bestiality is always wrong! If sled dog racing where an Olympic sport, given the way the Swedish have treated animals, no doubt they would continually underperform in this event despite their Protestant cultural legacy.
