I'm not a fan of ham-fisted exposition-heavy episode 3s that could have been episode 1s, but it wasn't too bad.

It's more Eva than TTGL by a longshot, on pure references at least. First episode alone, top of my head, I think of the chatting on giant escalators, the general cockpit/control design including that first slow pan (from bottom to top ), plugsuits, some poo poo about running away and moments later the monster shows up, injured pilot falls to the ground and the MC demands to be let in, remembering nothing about the first battle...

Also yeah there is for sure something different about Zero Two's robot setup. We once again did not see Zero Two while inside it and the short glimpses inside were only of Mitsuru's face.

I'm hesitant to say anything different about it, her suit's the same as the other pistils, if anything she looks like she can control it without being in position.

It definitely seemed like Mitsuru was the one controlling the movements, like the other pilot pairs, from the way he speaks, though. And from the shot at the end he's sitting at the male's position like the others:

I really like the music in this show. There's some really cool echoey drones going on in the high end that I am super into. I did not like this episode as much as the previous 2, but I am still very invested & excited to see what happens next. I think it's interesting how the robot designs for most of the robots are kind of 'cute'; they're childlike or adolescent, wheras Strelzia is much more adult-like with it's wide pose, hips, & shoulders and powerful stance.

I saw all the "it's NTR" posts and went into episode 3 fearing the worst, but it wasn't that bad. They made the piloting process much more "professional" (for lack of a better word) this time, so it felt more office politics than anything else.

Well, there's still strong relationship dynamics too, but yeah. Definitely toned down this time. Just as well. If the show kept up the initial rate of escalation, we'd be past Sex and Violence with Machspeed by episode 4, and enter some incomprehensible new realm of hyperporn by episode ten. With this, it kind of feels like it was so explicit last time to make sure nobody would miss the themes, and now that everyone's on the same page, it's more comfortable letting subtext be, you know, sub. (Like Hiro!)

This was an okay episode but not a banger like the first two. Not much tension or threat, or really much going on. Strelizia is still better than everyone else, Dr Franxx is still a creep (without even appearing!), Hiro is still a mopey gently caress who needs to get some self respect, Ichigo still crushes on him, this show still really loves NGE, and still nobody can handle 02. Did we learn much of anything from this episode that wasn’t in the others? There’s the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it revelation that the last batch of pilots from Plantation 13 got party wiped I guess. The smaller klaxosaurs (“saur” seems increasingly inappropriate title) are named for the Conrad discontinuity in the continental crust, just as the one from ep1 was designated for the (deeper) Mohorovičić discontinuity. I assume the big bad guys are Lehmann class.

Wouldn't be surprised if the danger really is Zero Two herself more than Streilzia. Things were fine until she went berserker mode after all. My guess is she simply outputs so much energy at full force it burns out her partner's. Hiro might be her perfect partner because his energy is so low she can use him basically as a heatsink, Though as the others talked about him being impressive in the past I'm guessing there's unrevealed past trauma.

I feel like this show hasn't quite played all it's cards despite all the extremely overt imagery and allegory. The show selectively showing us the cockpit of the Steriliza is the most obvious thing, but the city balcony scene makes me think there's a whole lot to 02 and the the state of the world that we haven't been clued into yet. The way that scene was done feels too intentional to just be a bit of world building.

Futaba Anzu posted:does anyone know who composed the op btw it's a real banger I get a very vague early 00s feel from the OP in both visuals and music. Something in the realm of Eureka7 but it's not as uplifting and the visual focus isn't on the mechs like the surfing scenes were used for. It's not a bad OP but it feels like they went for an older feel with FranXX. Can't quite put my finger on what else makes me think that. All in all the episode took off once we got into the plug suits. The worldbuilding feels off though, there's this whole Evangelion-style geofront city but there isn't a sign that anyone lives there. The story feels empty of the humans these kids are supposed to be protecting. Everything else was fine, I just feel like the story is too predictable at the moment. No real surprises, everyone is doing the things I figured would happen after a few minutes of watching the episode.

Well if the writers go maximum Gainax, Hiro and 002 will be forced to escape from the Plantation (because APE has decided they are too powerful and therefore too dangerous). After the escape, APE sends Hiro's former squadmates after him, resulting in a showdown between Ichigo/Goro and 002/Hiro. Good end: Hiro convinces everyone to join him, uniting together to fight against APE and restore the world and whatever. Bad/Gainax end: everyone dies.

Since we've had mention that the previous squad was wiped out, it could be that a lot of their people died then too.

That feels unlikely since the city is shown to have a lot of lights in windows, which to me implies people are there, but I agree we haven't been shown the people of the city so it feels distant and the stakes don't carry the same weight.

And even though we're standing on the balcony overlooking this massive complex there's no movement either. No cars driving around, no lights turning on or off. The city might as well be a christmas tree. If this city is supposed to be one of the few habitable locations for humanity, why does it feel so empty? There aren't any guards in the corridors leading into the off-limits areas. They comment in the first episode that the long escalator doesn't get used often. And at best they have a small security detail to keep an eye on the kids in the upper dome. It just feels empty, before we at least had the stadium of people at the coronation ceremony but i'm not unconvinced that the majority of those figures weren't holograms.

Hiro’s problem is that he lacks any sort of attraction to his co-pilot. Hence 02’s teasing that perverts make better pilots.
