This is a silly post with little news value.

lol at being stuck between two of the worlds worst customer service depts

quote:

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/jan/29/uber-account-hacked-russia-refund-paypal
In September my Uber account was hacked and three trips were taken by the fraudsters in Russia, which resulted in my account being charged 16,000 roubles.

Although I was demonstrably nowhere near Moscow at the time, £229 was taken from my PayPal account, details of which I had given to Uber to pay for trips.

I raised this with my bank, Halifax Bank of Scotland, which applied for a charge-back, but PayPal said this was a legitimate transaction, even though Uber has admitted my account was hacked.

I contacted Uber again and received a “refund” of over 16,000 roubles in “Uber credits” which, as don’t live in Russia, I was obviously unable to use.

PayPal has since told me Uber never tried to make the refund and that I should ask Uber again to do so.

Uber still blames PayPal for the problem – leaving me going round in circles. I have tried everything but am getting nowhere.

of the two entities (paypal, your cc company), unless you're habitually disputing things, your cc company is going to reverse that poo poo with minimal fuss

i mostly use paypal because if a lovely company gets breached it means i don't have to get a new set of credit cards, and uber seems like it fosters the kind of corporate culture that encourages you to commit AWS keys to github or w/e

but i don't actually use uber so w/e i can't actually say what I'd actually use to pay for uber

while i realize that it is really simple to turn off the tracking feature, there's no way to actually enforce that every servicemember with a fitbit has that poo poo disabled. they're just going to ban all wearables on installations or something similarly kneejerk.

for example, after the chelsea manning dump to wikileaks, there were major changes to rules on secure systems that were really obvious in hindsight but had never been an issue before (basically disable all floppy drives on SIPR and above computers and disable any write access on any other media - manning used cd-rws iirc). for example, i was no longer allowed to move data myself from my ammunition inventory system computer (a standalone airgapped system) to the secret classified computers because all floppy access had been disabled. so what used to be "pop floppy out of laptop and send message myself" turned into "take floppy disc to radio so the it people could upload it to the siprnet for me instead and send the message."

these are the same people who needed to be told not to post geotagged photos of secret airfields with secret planes on foursquare. it's not that they're stupid, it's that they don't care, so a nuanced approach meant to bring about understanding won't ever ever ever work

from the perspective of the poor bastard who has to enforce them and answer for things when they break, it's really convenient to be able to make broad, sweeping rules that can be compliance-checked visually from 50 yards out. since the folks making the rules aren't the ones who have to follow them, and they're usually the same people who can be browbeaten into bending them by vvvips who absolutely have to have their wifi doodad in the hsz, once the rule comes out nobody's in a position to change it
