Protesting garbage like aktiivimalli is like the whole purpose of unions so go for it I guess. I don't really care if they have ulterior motives and are terrible in other ways.

Going to vote Paavo to give a middle finger to this government and to humiliate Matti Vanhanen even further (not much left to humiliate, granted). If it actually goes to the second round I'm just going to draw in an actual middle finger in the ballot.

To pass the time, a review of the candidates. Merja Kyllönen, LA A bit invisible in the debates, not aggressively pushing her agenda or views. Too much of a passive wallflower, even if the presenters ignored her for some reason. When she did get her say, she did it with colorful, almost with Timo Soini-esque wit. Boring people who think the president should have some resemblance of respectability probably won't vote for her. Pekka Haavisto, Greens He continued his calm demeanor from last elections, but this time around the votes aren't coming for some reason. He did try to get under Sauli's skin a couple of times, but more should've been done. Matti Vanhanen, CP The middle-of-the-road rationalist. What was he for? Not for NATO at least, but so were the other candidates. Being the candidate of a currently unpopular government means he's a victim of tactical voting. Laura Huhtasaari, TF If Paavo didn't manage to pull himself into the race, undoubtedly she'd get all the crazy votes. Lives in La-La land. Claims to have read a book about history in the US once. I expected more(?) from her, but was disappointingly passive. Tuula Haatainen, SDP Bland as hell. While her heart was in the right place, she needed something to make people actually notice her. Currently she's way below estimated numbers, which means trouble for Antti Rinne, SDP party chairman who sponsored her. Paavo Väyrynen The Wild Card. Somehow managed to suck out all the energy from other candidates, which he used to attack Sauli for conspiring to push Finland to the NATO alliance. But is he a credible candidate like in the last elections, or has he become a political weirdo? Sauli Niinistö, (NC) While he is an independent candidate, his election campaign officers are life-long NC members. Had smooth sailing while throwing his long-winded anecdotes about stuff. Had it way too easy. If there's going to be a round two, his challenger needs to more actively engage with him. Nils Torvalds, SFP Of all the candidates, he's the most clearest one. No wishy-washy statements of preconditions or anything else, straight up supports joining NATO. Of that we applaud him. But are the voters ready for that? According to the polls, apparently not.

In a move that surprises no-one, Sipilä isn't going to resign if Vanhanen flops at the ballot box after all. 20 minutes until preliminary votes are revealed.

Honestly though I'm pretty ok with Niinistö. With how little actual power the president has he's a great public speaker and works great as a foreign face of Finland. Could have much worse options. He's a bit bland but that's fine for the office he has.
