I still maintain that Ouroboros and the Enforcers are the worst part of this entire series, though I've only played up to SC. They dragged down every scene they were in and the more screentime they hogged the worse the plot became.

I'm obviously not in far enough to really judge this, but they're simultaneously the darkest part about the setting so far (and so I hate them, for taking away the light and fun feel of the game) and the most...for lack of a better adjective, anime. Which makes them one of the goofiest things in the game.

However you feel about 'em though, I hope you agree with me that the use of them with Joshua was really effective and set up the plot quite nicely.

On an adjacent note, I've been reflecting on this child's adventure vs adult questing and - I know there's a big change because I'm nostalgic for the days when we were running around Bose chasing down clues and fishing and reflecting on Olivier drinking an entire bottle of wine, etc - and I'm also completely aware we can't go back to that. Even if we got Joshua back, the dynamic wouldn't be the same. The world isn't the same. Estelle can't walk into Rolent or Bose or anywhere and be that cheerful, naive girl anymore.

...On the other hand, she's still cheerful and happy-go-lucky, so... well.

As much as things change, some things never do.

Yeah, agreed on both counts. They play the cliches a lot straighter than the main cast and I'd gotten bored of a lot of their tropes a while ago, which was annoying after the laid-back pace of FC. Without getting into spoilers, Leonhardt in particular is unbearable and just gets worse and worse as the game goes on.

Joshua's arc stayed entertaining throughout but it was more in spite of Ouroboros than because of them.

Alright, alright, let me elaborate.

A group of mysterious sadists, united by their own individual goals and the willingness to use silly nicknames that are numbered, who obey a singular master. They're ripped from - hell. Hunter x Hunter, Kingdom Hearts, Naruto, etc.

I understand that the same applies to Bracers - Silver Streak, Heavy Blade - but it's the unique combination of sadism/villainy, powerful and mysterious, and how when they show up it usually means the plot is about to get a lot darker/complicated.

This is certainly true.

As I've said, I personally love the Enforcers, especially Campanella, who's just the goddamn best.

Ouroboros aren't quite what you think. SC and 3rd probably shows them at their worst, but when you get to your Zero and Ao and your three Cold Steels they get a lot more interesting. Still antagonistic but not really the main antagonists and are more of a third wheel faction in the background with the Enforcers and Anguis having their own complicated alliances with other individuals.

They're still the overall main antagonists of the series, but they are a lot less black and white once you get past the Liberl arc of FC, SC and 3rd and become more like darker shades of grey.

Ouroboros always felt like a “humans are already bad and were just encouraging them” kind of group.

The Enforcers actually providing a strong running threat and rogues gallery is a big part of why SC feels so much better paced then FC.

Definitely agree with this. While I really loved the Liberl Arc, the group becomes more interesting when it's clear that they aren't quite as unified in their purpose, or allegiances, as they may seem at points in FC, SC or 3rd. I'm certainly more interested in the group now, even if I liked Weissmann as a villain and enjoyed seeing him get taken down . I was also quite happy to see Phantom Thief B in CS1. He's an amusing character, even without Olivert around! I also found his voice acting to be really fitting.. Looking forward to CS2 this February to see where things begin to go.

Completely unrelated to Trails, I recently started playing Zwei: The Arges Adventure and wow is that game a lot less forgiving than I was expecting! Was expecting it to be a bit more laid back but some encounters really demand precision. Fun game to pick up and play in bursts though.

It's been made clear from the beginning that they're not unified at all. They're all just there because they feel like it. Mid SC: One of the specific things mentioned is that even Anguis can't order around Enforcers.

Yeah the enforcers don't really make any sense as an organization.

They are kind of dumb but the game isn't really about them so eh.

Ouroboros and by extension Trails would be far lamer if they were run like a strict military organization. Them being free spirited not only informs a lot of their characterization but is also required for a lot of scenarios (particularly in Cold Steel) to work at all in the greater scheme of things.

Things like Star Door 14 in 3rd is kind of what puts most of this into perspective.

Estelle is my favorite character. :allears:

Also you guys were right - Agate's a good fit for this chapter, his interactions with Estelle are good (real good!) and it feels natural to work with him. Also he's far more likable now that he's no longer so tense from that job he was on when we met him. (And now that he likes us a bit!)

verb the adjective noun

I felt like SC was screaming at me to pick Agate.

In the first game, you get to know Schera better than Agate, and she's an authority figure / big sister to Estelle. SC starts with Estelle's first order of business being: become my own bracer, stop relying on Josh, dad, and Schera. It seemed like a good chance to get to know more about Agate, and if I'm not mistaken, you know that you're going to Ruan first, before you choose (right?)[wrong]. And as little as we know about Agate, we know he spent a lot of time there.

Also, for a more personal reasoning, Schera is just my least favorite battle party member in FC and SC.

So, Agate was a heavy favorite for me; but the real answer is to just play it twice.

Oh SC. "You know how you got burned out by Ruan in FC and its sidequests and everything? Guess where you get to start in SC?"

It's better this time because I'm talking to the NPCs and being happy they're doing okay, but I'm also running full-tilt into "too much to do" syndrome, haha. I've cleared the casino, I've started fishing, the walkthrough says wait on going to the tower so you can get more BP, and off I go to Manoria.

I bet that I'm about to miss something by not going to the academy but listen, self: it's okay if we don't get everything.

(I miss that checklist walkthrough. I know the author won't finish it, but man, it was so freeing to just look at it and know that I had everything and could move on.)
