The biggest part of game development is that we are still figuring MANY of these answers out.

People ask, 'OH! WHEN YOU HAVE FIFTY STAR SYSTEMS IN PLACE HOW WILL I DO THIS', and the answer to that is almost always, "WE DON'T NEED THAT ANSWER UNTIL WE HAVE FORTY FIVE STAR SYSTEMS IN PLACE", so nobody's thinking about that right now.

So, um... ahl... ahm... the first question I always have to ask myself is, 'look at the ones that are voted', and then I have to go to myself, 'IS THERE AN ANSWER FOR THAT'. and if there is? BOOM! It goes on the list and I go and I track someone down. Ahm... oh... a lot of times... because I don't wanna just IGNORE things... sometimes what you need... what the COMMUNITY needs to hear is that there's NO ANSWER for that.

We're at war with Goons. We were attacked by Goons. Do you want to kill Goons, or would you rather have Citizens killed?
Had a fun encounter this past weekend. Friends and I were playing the beta of some other space game that runs pretty well in VR and trying out wing missions. In pops someone we knew from another non-eve space MMO from 6 years ago and wants to know what we're doing. (Still thinks he's "spying" for the org he is in or something) Anyway has a fit of rage that we're playing "That space game that shall not be named" and telling us now how he's spent over $5k on Star Citizen and why that was such a great investment especially since I got a refund last year. Everyone else in the TS has $100 or less in Star Citizen and have pretty much written it off by now.

Any rate he's elated that me, "one of the admirals of the fleet in the old non-eve space MMO" was no longer part of SC. Years ago he had spent $1000 on a space chariot "to be an admiral" and told us all repeatedly that "if you want my frigate/destroyer/whatever you'll have to listen to me". Well the reason why we never listened to him 6 years ago is because he's an idiot. The first thing that was going to happen to him was his org was planning to trick him into bringing out the ship day 1 of the PU, tell him he's the admiral of the fleet that day and his glorious chariot was going to their flag ship, then shoot him in the back and steal the ship for the org giving it to someone who could actually figure out how to use it.

I so wanted to be in the TS for that misadventure. It would have been Youtube gold had we gotten a game.

The last decent info we got about how gameplay was going to be came from the likes of Rob Irving 5 years ago on Wingman's Hangar. People there today I don't think have any idea on what was said before. If there was a design document at any point it's likely got several inches of dust collected on it at this point. The fact they could not describe how they wanted ship flight to feel 3 years into the project was telling and one of the major reasons I sought a refund. As someone else stated: Frontier picks their path and executes. They wanted airplanes in space feel with Elite and they delivered. Now you can say you don't like their decisions, but you can't say they didn't hit the mark they were aiming for whereas CIG has no idea what that mark even is supposed to look like.

This is classic cargo cult nonsense. Lando, in his obvious inexperience, doesn't understand what iteration means. He doesn't know what planning looks like. He's never been a part of the design process. He's repeating words he's heard and/or read a blog about, and the way he mis-uses them belies his absolute rookie status in game development.

Agile development doesn't mean "don't plan." It means plan to the best of your ability given the information you have now, but understand the plan will change as new information becomes available and plan for that too.

I mean holy poo poo, in design terms, the difference between 45, 50, and 100 star systems is absolutely zero. For every gameplay feature, you MUST take into account how it will play in 100 star systems with 1000's of players using them. But Lando doesn't understand the nature of the question, at all, because he's an absolute novice at this. Expert game developers rely on knowledge and experience, and can foresee both challenges and opportunities for fun, which informs the design. And when asked that question, they would have an answer, because they know to think about it.

Once you can scale to 45 systems, and your gameplay holds fast and proves itself fun, without exploits or tech issues at scale, the design is effectively done. It works. Now just keep adding systems which at most requires artwork and environment design (read: time).

But if you don't know what the gently caress you're doing, you spend all your development time in the weeds working on something that doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of working at scale, let alone being fun, and is guaranteed to have game-breaking exploits, and when that becomes apparent when your half-cooked prototype falls down in production, you scrap it and start over, re-doing it just like the last time.

CIG is stuck in a Sisyphean hell of incompetence. Case in point, I know of a guy who was working on the ship's damage states. He spent the better part of a year working and re-working the same problem because Chris kept changing the poo poo up. He worked diligently on this single feature for nearly a year before quitting, as there was no end to the re-works in sight.

Nothing to see here. It's completely plausible that tens of thousands of people are still creating accounts for Star Citizen and that thousands of people a day are finding out about it.

If these numbers aren't being faked by turbulent then it's whales either trying to make the dream seem more legitimate by spamming tens of thousands of fake accounts to give the illusion of demand or there is some kind of exploit in the dumb referral process that super autistic backers are continually taking advantage of to generate UEC for themselves endlessly to rack up their scores of fake money.

That sounds about right. Especially if most of his cues come from parpy Chris or their marketing tactics.

The cult followers will gobble it all up though, as "this is how game development works, of course!".

I'm surprised that all this dodging and proven lies haven't started settling in their subconscious as feelings of resentment and dismissal towards "game developers" since all they seem to do is to wing it and see what happens while burning other people's money and lying to get more.

But it's like broken communication. The further it gets away from the source, the more distorted the original message becomes. And if you consider the source to be Crobbler, then it's a miracle that the citizens get to listen to semi-coherent sentences.

Other than buying ships, spending time to create new citizen accounts is one of the only ways a delusional backer with too much emotional investment can directly "Help the game." Slapfighting on forums and stuff doesn't really count. Creating new accounts raises a number that is good for the game and all it takes is the time of the person who wants to do it.

The number of citizen accounts is a huge weapon used by the faithful to prove they aren't alone in their stupidity and that "The People" want Star Citizen.

I bet there are people who have created thousands of accounts each. Or more.

Pirate: You cannot truly steal ships anymore.
Explorer: 5 systems at launch, golf-club.
Trader: Lol, your computer cannot handle the load caused by the physics-aware cargo
Bounty Hunter / Combat: 7-12 FPS during dogfights
Mining: Delayed to 3.13.23.3!
Repair: See mining, add a year.
Information Specialist: This one is fine!
Passenger Transport: This one is too!
Space Paparazzo: Working as intended.

So, obviously, you want to infiltrate passenger transports to take photos of famous people drinking hairy roberts to sell to information specialists.

Everything seems fine, it'll be an engrossing game.

You prompted me to look into this and it is quite interesting... In the below plot, I took the "fan" (i.e. citizen) numbers for 2017 and detrended them so that the average rate of increase for the entire year corresponds to a horizontal line. This just makes it easier to see how the rate of increase compares to the average. If the curve is going up, then citizens are coming in faster than the annual average; if it is going down, they are coming in slower.

I marked some notable dates on the graph. The Monthly Studio Report refers vaguely to a "revamp of the referral program", and the oldest user comment on it was April 15. This suggests that the report came out on April 15. However, the MSR is also linked from a post of Disco Lando's which has a timestamp of April 10. So I'm not sure exactly when the MSR came out; however, a big influx of citizens starts around April 15.

The actual details of the referral contest were announced April 20, and curiously, the initial spike is already over by then. It looks like the rush expends the last of its steam by mid-May, and after that, signup rates are actually below average until after Citizencon.

Why would new citizen traffic shoot up in the 5 days prior to the start of the referral contest, when the citizenry at large didn't have any information on the contest? :thunk:
