While I shouldn't dig at a derail, but screw that! I wonder if these machines just don't have dead man switches by design, or do workers sometimes tamper with it if it 'got in the way'. Both options are pretty funny.

They always have dead man switches and they always get hosed with by workers trying to make them "more efficient" or something.

If you haven't been following the "Mad Mike Hughes" flat earth rocket launch thread in GBS you'll be missing some remarkable schadenfreude. This guy is extraordinarily incompetent at everything he does and constantly fucks up in new and unexpected ways. Let's watch as Mike and his support crew attempt to move his steam powered rocket from the launch RV (that's right, I said "steam powered rocket" and "launch RV") to a trailer, a relatively simple process.

Snowglobe of Doom posted:

One week to go to the launch! Mad Mike obviously realised that his last attempt was pretty halfassed so he's set up a GoFundMe crowdfunding project to raise an extra $10,000 to pay for things like an RV to sleep in while he's at the launch site setting up, renting a crane so he can get the rocket into position without dropping it (again), gas & food, etc etc..

He started it a few days ago, let's see how close he is to his target so far:

Hmmm, not exactly soaring with the eagles yet

Edit: ah ha ha ha, Mad Mike named his refitted rocket the Liberty 1

I guess he didn't google the name before he decided on it, the doomed rocket in the original Planet of the Apes movie was called the Liberty 1.
http://planetoftheapes.wikia.com/wiki/Icarus/Liberty_1

I foresee two possible outcomes:
1) He cancels the launch, blaming 'trolls' for ruining his online cred and chasing donors away from his crowdfunding campaign so he didn't get the necessary funds
2) He goes ahead with the launch anyway and dies

In war zones and deserts in countries such as Iraq and Syria, the heat map becomes almost entirely dark — except for scattered pinpricks of activity. Zooming in on those areas brings into focus the locations and outlines of known U.S. military bases, as well as of other unknown and potentially sensitive sites — presumably because American soldiers and other personnel are using fitness trackers as they move around.

Here's a dude that biked Area 51 I found a few years back. IIRC there used to be more traces and they got removed in the big update last November: https://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#13.00/-115.81375/37.26451/hot/all

Is package theft like this a real epidemic in America? There seem to be a lot of videos showing this kind of poo poo, but that might just be prejudice brought about by watching lots of dickheads on the Internet.

Depends on the neighborhood, but yes. Even in my suburb, where someone getting a lawn gnome stolen is like the crime of the century, the city sent out warning fliers around Christmas saying to watch out for curbside shoppers

A lot of previously quiet safe middle class american suburbs are really not doing well. People getting addicted to poo poo to cope with their miserable debt-ridden lives then turning to package theft. It's way easier than breaking into cars or houses and the whole US package delivery system is based around just leaving poo poo in plain sight from the street.

I've been pleasantly surprised that despite being directly across the street from a high school I've never had a package stolen but a co-worker of mine that lives a few blocks from me has to have all his packages delivered to the office because so much gets stolen from his porch. With the increasing prevalence of doorbell cameras and inexpensive/wireless surveillance cameras there's been a lot more videos hitting the web of it occurring. Now I want to go rewatch that video series that one guy put on of all the crazy poo poo from his neighbors he caught on his home surveillance cameras culminating in someone being chased around with a baseball bat IIRC.

Fake Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqA276KEbc8 It's even crazier than I remember.

I always just get everything sent to my work. But anything sent home wouldn't be left by the door, it would go back to the post office and I'd have to schlep down there and collect it.
