In the UK retailers need to be registered to sell game meats. The biggest Tesco's all are I think, but they don't typically have the butchers cut to order, it's a 3rd party that packages it up and is found in the normal meat aisle. Get in touch with a local reserve, see if the game keeper can get you a supply.

Veal calves are kept in very confined spaces and aren't ever fed solid food (when they should be). It's why the meat's so tender.

OwlFancier posted:The UK has a thing about eating babby cows, I dunno why unless they pulverize them live or something, meat involves killing animals. I was told there was a moral outrage campaign over white veal (the really nasty one where the calf is kept forcibly upright to tenderise the meat as much as possible) which to lead to the outright abandonment of white and red veal (the normal one where the calf is raised the same as any other livestock). Maybe I'm just weirdly lacking in animal empathy though because I really want to try ortolans- the meal where you cloak your head with the napkin to hide your shame from God (as well as keep the aromas from escaping). In related news, I think Switzerland is updating its animal cruelty laws in accordance with new science about conscience in animals and you can no longer boil lobster alive (it has to be stunned or taken out first).

Most people don't object to veal because it's calves, it's the same (correct) objection people have to battery chicken farming. If I could be sure that a veal calf hadn't been confined to a crate or similar totally unnecessary cruelty I'd have no more objection to eating it than I do for eating lamb.

Veal in this country generally refers to "white veal" i.e. the one where they are confined and fed only milk. You are starting to see move towards "young beef" now which is similar to red veal in a lot of ways, I don't think its widely available though. Also another thread reminded me of an age old question: is there a worse UK accent than Nottingham? I say no, but that might be because I have to put up with it every day.
