I've had the book recommended to me several times by both Amazon and my library's e-book lending system, and I kept waiting to pull the trigger because every review I read was basically "This tickled my geeky bone, and flipped all my nostalgia switches" without really getting into any reason why the book might actually be good. Then the movie was announced, and people started posting excerpts from the book, and stuff like Neil C's thing came along to convince me I was absolutely right to never read it. https://twitter.com/neilcic/status/888866630306082817

The protagonist of RP1 is a shut-in who lives in a literal fantasy world, where the cool people all obsess over 80s trivia. He is rewarded for this behaviour by winning billions in a contest. His heroic feats include memorising the whole script of Wargames. The evil corporation cheats because they have no honour. Charlie Brooker should do a Black Mirror episode of this poo poo.

I hadn't heard of Ready Player One until I saw the announcement about filming it. At first I got excited because I thought it was going to be based on Douglas Coupland's book "Player One" which is quite a good read.

Couldn't force myself to read it after the most internet atheist argument within the first 20 pages. The audiobook is narrated by Wil Wheaton. It is loving terrible. In the book black people, especially black women, love the MMO world because they can pretend to be white men. Yay racism solved forever, thanks Ernest Cline

I read some into the book. It had one good concept for a scene where the kid is playing Joust on an arcade cabinet against some lich king. Of course the execution was poo poo and everything else I managed to get through was as well.

RP1 was way too heavy handed with the nostalgia and his fawning over some girl all the time was cringe worthy. If you want to read a book about a dystopian future where people live in virtual worlds via VR headsets I recommend The Peripheral by William Gibson. That was a very good book that owned on many levels.

Yeah, I have actually read the drat thing cover to cover (it was before I had an ebook-reader and there was no other book around, okay?) and I could not tell you a single drat thing about what's in it. It's just so utterly, impossibly bland. Imagine if you took every popular thing from the popculture of the last 30 years, dumped it all into a blender, and then blended the whole thing until it was a perfectly featureless, textureless mush. That's what this book is. It's set in a dystopian cyberpunk-y future with full immersive VR and all kinds of theoretically cool poo poo, and yet I cannot recall a single thing that was at all interesting.
