Puzzle games are usually my go-to in situations like this, but they're super hit or miss when it comes to frustration factor and I've pretty much exhausted evergreen options like picross.

How much thinking do you want to do?

In order from least to most thinking:
- Faerie Solitaire
- Everyday Genius (you can increase the thinking factor by turning off assists, though)
- Roguelikes (I've been goofing around in Coin Crypt lately which is pretty brainless and has progressive unlocks, but there are much more complicated (and free) ones.)
- Hexcells (solid logic puzzles. Forgiving of mistakes (you can click randomly and solve them if you want) but a "no mistakes" run will melt brains)
- Spacechem (Are you an engineer? Because you probably won't get far otherwise)

Or for outside of the puzzle genre:
- Anno. Any Anno. Super chill trade empire creation.
- Factorio.

you're wrong about SDV, you can seriously do as little or as much as you want, there is literally no fail state in that game

I can tune a fish.
Now that it's not 3AM I should probably rephrase what I'm looking for a little better... 1) Has to be easy on the eyes. Been dealing with on and off vision problems so shooters or anything involving zipping around in a vehicle are probably out, as is anything that relies on reams of text or tons of tooltips, and pretty much anything else with a huge graphical focus. 2) Has to be really easy to pick up and play. Because when it's 3AM and I'm grumpy I'm going to uninstall anything with a hump to get over the second I get stuck on something. 3) Has to have something to keep me focused, a bit of depth and a bit of progression. Part of what kept me locked onto D3 for so long was the rigid but controllable progression through difficulty levels as I chased loot and tweaked my build. And 4) preferably has a bit more action or direct engagement with a minimum of downtime.

I fully admit that it's an insanely narrow set of criteria, and hugely subjective to boot. I also realize I'm basically asking for another D3 or at least a game that matches Blizzard in terms of good game feel which is a tall order.

Puzzle games are a bit of a dead end because the ones I've poked at lately all ended up the same way - I got about three levels in and then got bored or frustrated. Faerie Solitaire and Everyday Genius are both cases where I had substantial progress in them but lost my saves, which turned me off playing them again. The EG saves were a lost cause due to Steam cloud fuckery, but I should see if I can rescue my FS one...

But Not Tonight posted:

You CAN do as little or as much as you want, but that won't stop my brain from stressing out about every possible variable and wanting to over-optimize everything. I want something rigid and noisy to burn through, rather than Stardew's sedate, open pace.

I'd say games like XCom, Darkest Dungeon, Invisible Inc., and the Total War series have something close to the right mix of what I'm after despite not being action-oriented but unfortunately they also all have a propensity for inducing frustration... Maybe with the difficulty turned down.. Even still, I'd prefer building up a single character over a squad. As for roguelikes/lites, I've never really encountered one I outright hated but none of them have ever really clicked either. And it's hardly a genre defined by minimal frustration. :v:

I've steered clear of it so far. The huge, sprawling complexity of it is a bit of turn off, but as I understand you slowly build up to that point? I see there's a demo for it, so I might as well give it a shot.

Edit: Tried the demo...I'm mildly interested in it, but boy did the "helpful tips" it spams at the start of the third level just instantly turn me off. What on earth.

Oh, good call. 10tons' stuff has been on my radar lately and I already have Crimsonland and Neon Chrome. I'll give those a shot first, though I think they're both a bit faster paced than Jydge (outside of its time trial objectives).

Edit: Really good call. Ended up playing both a fair bit, Neon Chrome even a bit more than intended. I doubt these will hold my attention forever but they're just right for the moment.

After playing through Nier:Automata I've decided to give Japanese games another look. In particular I'm looking at Nioh and Tales of Berseria.

I watched a bit of a gameplay for Nioh and it seems to be a Dark Souls clone with a lovely story tacked on. Tales of Berseria has really good reviews on steam but it has the tags nudity, mature and sexual content in it. Which makes me worry it's just a porn game and those gushing reviews are a lot of words for "I liked the anime titties".

Would anyone that's played either of those recommend them as genuinely good games with good stories or can anyone recommend any other JRPG type games that are on steam (and don't have 20 odd titles in the series like, say, Final Fantasy)?

it's a fairly long running series too, so i dunno if it wouldn't be disqualified anyway due to your " don't have 20 odd titles in the series like, say, Final Fantasy" clause, though much like final fantasy every game in the series is standalone so that seems like an odd clause to have

From Japan wasn't a good way of putting it because Dark Souls and Metal Gear Solid V are Japanese games that I've absolutely loved. I suppose I mean something that isn't anime nonsense. Or if it is; it's something that transcends the genre like Evangelion and Nier: Automata do. I can forgive a some overtly sexual poo poo (MGSV and Nier sure as hell have that in them) as long as it's something in the game and not the whole point of the game. If you search for anything Japanese on Steam you'll see why it's hard to weed out what's a dumb porn game and what isn't.

Final Fantasy is something I have no interest in ever playing. I've seen enough gameplay of it to know it's what I'd class as anime garbage.

cave story is an excellent game, and you can pay for it on steam or download the freeware version. i don't know how anime is too anime for you, but cave story is about as anime as i imagine snes games were. if you've already played it, kero blaster is available on steam and it is a good game made by the same dude.

An entire series of which, only few titles are 'anime'-esque. Sure, some are edgy as sin (7,8) but for example 12 is actually just Star Wars. Is Star Wars anime?

Also, you (poster asking for recommendations) mention dumb porn games a lot. I hope you realise they actually do not contain porn. Those ones aren't on Steam. They exist, yes, but if it's on steam it is more often than not parody or Western in origin. Also:

Kinda weird to limit yourself just because of the country where the game was developed in.

Bayonetta and DMC are great action games. The gameplay is similar to Nier Automata because it is the same dev and one of their lead guys created DMC.

I do believe there are parts that have some nudity in Bayonetta but it is not full nude.

Pablo Gigante posted:

To be fair though Berserk has more common with dark western novels than modern anime/manga so it is hard to see the influence.

Anyway I always thought it is stupid to dismiss something because of a medium. It's like saying I can't watch Lord of the rings because it is based on a novel and Twilight is also a novel so it must be poo poo.

Now this I would take issue with. On the surface, yes, Nier Automata looks like an open-world Bayonetta. The animations are incredibly smooth, stylish, and detailed, and there's good variety in the weapons selections and such. The combat in Automata felt incredibly shallow, though, and holy poo poo the enemy design was lazy. I dunno, maybe it got a lot better later on. But with the exception of a couple bosses they actually put some effort into, I was so unimpressed with the game that I uninstalled it after about 5-6 hours.

He said he already played Nier Automata. So the combat is only an improvement in Bayonetta. I wouldn't recommend Nier to someone who liked Bayonetta but the other way around is fine unless you only liked NierA because of the story.

i've never heard someone say "that looks too RTS-y" or "that's too much RTS in the game for me" about a game before. usually it's a pretty binary "i don't like rts games" or "i do like rts games," there's not really shades of tolerance where someone says "that picture of unit selection is just crossing the line for me."

more to the point though, if it was a picture of catgirls or some poo poo i'd be more understanding, anime does often come with weird sometimes uncomfortable cliches, but "there's a picture of a child, HARD PASS" is kind of ridiculous.

you'll also note that i'm the one who suggested that perhaps a better way of phrasing what he means is "i don't like anime artstyle" and that that's not actually something he said. i'm not even sure that's accurate, considering he held up, uh, evangelion and nier automata as being ok.
