They could just go the Professor Marston method, which pretty much ends up the same as your suggestion anyway. I legit thought they should do that in Riverdale, although now it's Archie with Veronica while Betty is with Jughead.

Plus, Jughead is played by Cole Sprouse; every women who grew up on 2000s Disney Channel and are now one of the channel's primary demo has a ladyboner for him. It's almost impossible for him to be asexual on the show. Also Betty actress Lili Reinhart is dating Cole for real now (and she's one of the aforementioned women), so they have to take advantage of that chemistry.

He was actually an avowed asexual in the comics for a few years before the show hit. Then the producers said no, gently caress that, he gonna bone down and peoole got upset about the loss of representation.
