Imagine a professional datacenter: tons of racks of components in a giant room attached to a bunch of commercial-grade air conditioners that keep the room nice and chilled and well-ventilated. Professional HPC components are designed to work in these conditions.

Now instead of that imagine just stuffing those components in an old television box and attaching a dryer lint hose to one end for "ventilation", and also you've flashed the cards' BIOS to override any thermal protection in order to squeeze out an extra $0.0001/day:

I did some research on this and the consensus is, if you run a card at 70% fan speed and leave it at 65c max at 100% gpu all the time it won't break.

"Out of the 83 1080s I have had running only 15 had fan failures, so i used cpu fans with zip ties. "

Agreed

At some point the consumers have to take responsibility, but I don't know where the line for that is and sometimes it doesn't matter anyway. So last night I started paper trading GDAX on tradingview, starting with 100K

This poo poo seems really easy, GDAX lags behind korean market movements by like 10 seconds which makes it super predictable. I think GDAX traders just sit there and stare at the depth chart or something. I was doing 10:1 margin but even without margin, that is 24% gain. Maybe I'll try my luck at the real thing..too bad no real exchanges offer margin trading. Forex sounds kind of appealing right now

Consumers are quite literally not given a choice, because they do not live in a democracy. They do not set the policies. A tiny minority sets the policies.

A democracy would mean that the policies are what the consumers want. In such a situation, then yeah you could legitimately blame the consumers.

comedyblissoption
Mar 15, 2006

I mean, you even bring up net neutrality as an example of a way to blame consumers for their stupidity or irresponsibility. That's actually a great counterargument for why you can't really blame the consumer.

The overwhelming majority of Americans want net neutrality. Net neutrality is being destroyed and constantly under threat because it benefits a tiny minority who controls society undemocratically. Blaming the majority of Americans in this scenario is peculiar.
