In on the med chat, I was rushed to the ER 3 Times in a week with anaphylaxis and the ER staff literally acted like they didn’t believe I was having an allergic reaction despite my vitals all corroborating my symptoms. I was begging them to see an allergist and find out what was causing this and they told me there wasn’t an allergist employed in the entire hospital. It’s a big loving hospital.

Today my sister was brought into the ER, 21 yo female with chest pains and shortness of breath. A healthy 21 yo should not be complaining that her lungs aren’t expanding enough to get air in. The ER staff shrugged and told her to take some ibuprofen.

So med staff don’t think only pain related things are exaggerations. Apparently we females don’t need to breathe as comfortably as we think we do either
[/quote]

Was she triaged and seen by a physician? Because ibuprofen is a pretty sound treatment for one of the more common causes of chest pain and shortness of breath in healthy young people.

While it sucks, allergist referral probably isn’t in the wheelhouse of emergency medicine. That is why your discharge info usually has a referral to a primary care or resources for finding one. If you’re stable for discharge and not actively dying of anaphylaxis then ED has done their job if they refer you to a pcp or some other way to get resources.

What the hell people?! Healthcare in the US is hosed, but most medical staff aren’t deliberately ignoring you “because women” or any poo poo like that.

Y’all should go post In the healthcare goons thread if you need more opinions on it.

Well I'm Canadian but I poo poo you not, it's definitely a thing for doctors to assume a woman is overreacting and acting irrationally when they have a legitimate medical complaint because we are stereotyped as weak, delicate, fragile flowers. Trust us, TRUST US on this. It is a serious problem that we all face our entire lives. When you're stereotyped as being weaker, it's assumed your complaints about pain aren't as legitimate. Not all health care professionals think this way, I totally admit, but it is a trend that negatively affects people who need genuine help.

I had a lipoma taken out of my leg last year because it was getting uncomfortable to walk, and no less than three times the surgeon asked me if I really wanted to go under the knife for something so "cosmetic."

It did make me snicker when, after tugging, tearing, and [TMI medical stuff here], he started swearing at the growth, mad that it was so tightly wound around my muscle. Yes mister doctor, that's the very reason I'm coming in.

No one said they were being left to die on a hospital bed dude, they were saying that when they go to doctors they clearly question whether or not they know what is wrong with them seemingly more than if guys go to the doctor.

Last time I went to the doctor I said "hey man, I'm pretty sure I have sleep apnea" he asked me why, and he just referred me to a specialist. Women I know have basically been treated as if they couldn't possibly have self diagnosed correctly until after over the top questioning.

Now maybe I have a poo poo doctor and he just does what patients ask for, maybe I have a good and chill doctor who trusts people. It's not really possible to tell, but is it really weird to believe well paid and educated men could possibly harbour some subconscious sexist thoughts that women aren't as sensible about all this stuff as men? Not to the point they literally do not do their job, but in terms of how they talk to patients whole diagnosing them?

It's true :( I work at a veterinary clinic and ill birds that come in as emergency cases survive a fraction of the amount of times an ill cat or dog emergency case does. When they go downhill they do it fast.

i love my dog and pretty much all animals, but birds are free spirited little dinosaurs who sing for you, dance for you, and can fly. my aunt's little canary lived forever, but poor baby never left his cage.

There's a reptile "store" in my town which basically is a family's collection. You can go in and visit, some critters are for sale, and you can pet just about anything but their arachnids. They have a giant indoor pond of friendly turtles. They also have a few very large, intelligent birbs that will talk/dance with you.
