Talking on a Slack about computers and how all cases are designed by people who want LEDs and fans on everything and I realized what I really wanted was the Shrovis-Bishopthorpe Envaliant III. As long as it comes with Mr. Teal and not the Publican as an assistant.

Somehow the Shrovis-Bishopthorpe arc is like, the most enduring one for me. I think I've reread it more than any other, it's just wonderful. A cute Easter egg that US readers might not easily pick up on is that Keith, the Publican, is a photo of Al Murray (a British comedian who was popular in the mid-2000s) in character as his most famous "bit", the Pub Landlord, who's a racist, sexist man's man who routinely makes himself look the fool with his old-fashioned bigotry. So Keith is pretty much just that character exactly, transplanted into Achewood as a cyber assistant for an extremely British computer.

Do you think Onstad googled "pub landlord" and ripped it, not knowing who Al Murrey is.
|
# ? Jan 31, 2018 11:51 |

It's possible, but the characters are so similar that I'd lay even odds on Onstad just watching some British comedy in the mid-2000s and using it as a source of inspiration.

Sifting the cod from our children's blood, they are. Incidentally I don't think there can be such a thing as a tasteful computer casing. The computer is an Unfortunate Device and can't be made better by any case.

Yeah there is no way that Onstad didn't know exactly who Al Murray was before he wrote that strip

I paid for the access back when Achewood was a real website (sigh, 10 years ago?) and I'm plagued by distant memories of good, amazing content that I've never seen anywhere since. The only strips that I can remember hard details about were a series of canned questions in survey format, that the characters each filled out in different ink and handwriting. One question was like "have you ever given oral sex to a man?" Ray: "Ray Smuckles does not guzzle semen, pass it on" Lyle: "Yes, while asleep. (god drat it, Todd)"

I hit random and rediscovered this gem: http://achewood.com/index.php?date=12222008 Words that Beef needed to hear, for entirely misunderstood reasons. I wonder how often he thinks about this clerk. Also what in the blazes is going on with that outline in the first panel? Is that a fish planting a ski flag?
