Okay, but at the same time while the Democrats may not have pulled the trigger, at least some of them helped hand the GOP the gun. And that needs to be dealt with. You can't just point out that the Democrats are in an unwinnable situation without addressing the hubris and the stupidity that led to it. So it's not just about "we need to elect Democrats" - we need to elect the right Democrats and that means rejecting some of the ones that suck, going forward. Call it a purity test if you like - they need to pass it.

It is a litmus test. To roll with the same metaphor, is handing someone a gun equivalent to pulling the trigger, if your choices are gun A, or gun B?

The test is calibrated to the composition of their district, it’s not a universal test. Feinstein is better than Manchin but he passes and she doesn’t. Purity test all the democrats in blue districts if you want, but shut up when we’re trying to win a red one.

because of the layout of the fifty states democrats cannot get a majority in the senate without winning in red states. it's just not possible. yes, it's undemocratic. no, it won't change. getting anything done requires controlling the senate, which means it is a practical requirement to tolerate joe manchin and other red-state democrats, who can only get elected by not being blue-state democrats.

i would prefer if we could control the government without blue dog senators. we can't. the system is not fair. it is not enough to have a unified nationwide policy all democrats adhere to that appeals to 55% of the country, because that doesn't get you the Senate. you need general principles, and then people who will vote with you most of the time from red states but who will vote against you some of the time.

if i could abolish the senate, and the need for red state democratic senators, i would in a heartbeat. i can't, so i need them, and that requires understanding that they must, by necessity, be to the right of where the nation is. reality isn't fair, and refusing to realize that makes it worse, not better.

And also Kilroy sucks. :v:

Pelosi should let a few of them also vote no, but a majority yes. If the majority of HFC is the cause of its failure, it doesn't really matter if one or two democrats went along with them.

Well, yeah. If the house doesn't pass anything you're absolutely right. I'm talking about a senate filibuster of a budget or CR, which is what happened before and what several posters in this thread are advocating for.

That is not going to happen because the Senate Dems have shaken hands on a 6-week CR in exchange for a promise of a DACA vote within 6 weeks. If DACA is passed and signed into law, then the Senate Dems will agree to a 2-year budget.

Pelosi is willing to accept that same kind of deal, except Paul Ryan is not willing to promise a DACA vote. So right now the Dems in the house are going "well hell, if you won't even give us a promise which you could just break later, then screw you, pass it yourselves"

Minnesota caucus

quote:

The 2018 election unofficially kicked off in Minnesota Tuesday evening, as tens of thousands of Minnesotans piled into their local school gymnasiums, cafeterias and community centers to signal their preference in the open race for governor and debate the core values of their chosen parties.

Whatever the results, Democrats were bolstered by their turnout numbers. With 72 percent of precincts reporting, party officials estimate 27,447 Democrats came out to caucuses Tuesday night, up from about 14,585 in the last midterm election, in 2014, when Dayton was the incumbent and the party didn’t hold a preference poll. In 2010, the last time the DFL had an open race for governor during caucus, 22,532 people voted in the party’s preference poll.

It was a much different story in the GOP caucuses. Republican turnout was at an all-time low, with 10,909 people showing up Tuesday night, down from about 14,109 caucus attendees in 2014. Both years featured an open contest on the GOP side of the ticket. In a statement, Republican Party Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan said caucuses are the “first opportunity” for the public to get involved in the 2018 election.
