The SDF are the Arab allies of the YPG organized politically as part of the PYD. They're not exactly the same, and some SDF groups don't adhere to the same level of discipline that the YPG/J does. Organizing the SDF was how the YPG were able to prevent a push on Manbij by the Turks, because if the area was held by Arab fighters the Turks didn't have a claim that they were clearing the area of Kurdish terrorists. Pro-Assad militias attacked SDF positions in the Deir-ez-Zor countryside 12 hours ago, then the US and SAA exchanged shellings and airstrikes. Could just be a flash in the pan, Assadist militias testing SDF strength while forces are drawn to Afrin. Might be the start of something bigger.
