This is actually mentioned in The Vietnam War documentary, though Greg Sheridan's interpretation is completely wrong. quote:The first U.S. prisoners of war were released by North Vietnam on February 11, and all U.S. military personnel were ordered to leave South Vietnam by March 29. Australian treasury policy is very much driven by the department, the treasurers job is to spin it in a way that appeals to either (preferably both) the public and/or their base. Changing the mind and the mood of treasury is pretty difficult. Scomo’s doing better than Hockey because he understands why you can’t just pull funding away from everything all at once, he just hates the spot it puts him in. Hockey never had a chance in the slightest, hence the 2014 budget.
