I used to have my work/on call phone ringtone set to the Star Trek Classic red alert klaxon, but slightly speeded up (so I didn't have to end it in the middle of a klaxon sound). One day I was on a smoke break with some other coworkers, two of which were CONVINCED we were going to have a tornado that day. My phone rings, and, before I can tap my headset to answer, both of them toss their smokes and star scurrying inside. I took a sec to explain that's my ringtone and took the call.

While deployed I was in a PAO in gitmo and we had to vet and then escort reporters or media around. Right after Serial season 1 finished airing (which we all listened to, week by week, as a group in the office which was a temporary building inside an old airplane hangar) we got a notification of some new media coming to gitmo. It was Sarah Koenig and Dana Chivvis. We had to vet them with their passports/SSNs/etc, and then create a digital profile on them (including audio clips and transcriptions of their past work, along with an analysis of their political leanings and writing/reporting style) that we could present to the admiral. He would have the final say on whether or not they could come to the base. Nobody knew what they were coming down for, and the reason they gave in their application was "political research." All of us wanted to meet them so bad, so when making the portfolio it was super sanitized so the admiral would approve. They came down, we drove them around for a week and mediated interviews with multiple high-ranking officials (including the admiral himself), screened their photos/video before they could keep it, and generally had a really, really good time. Turns out they were in guantanamo for their second season of Serial, about Bowe Bergdahl. I don't know WTF gitmo had to do with him, because an American citizen has never, and will never, be kept there. She didn't end up using any of the audio or footage she got while in gitmo during that season, but I know somewhere she has about six hours total of me droning on about [publicly available] base operation knowledge and snippets about daily life for the servicemembers who stay there. Of course, Sarah herself said she didn't know at the time what Serial Season 2 would even be about, as it's an episode-by-episode discovery of topics, so maybe it actually was during her research period, and she was just looking for a story about the military in general. Makes sense that she didn't do anything about gitmo, then, because it is actually really boring and not-at-all secretive anymore down there.

I set up the first 15 seconds of Anita Ward's Ring My Bell on a burner phone and buried it in a co-worker friend's cubicle just called it over and over. I would've gotten away with it too, but because it was an Android phone it auto-signed me into the Google Hangouts we were both in and every time someone posted it'd vibrate. Once he figured that out it was easier to track down. That's my ringtone story.
