I know Marco needs all the help he can get, but does he seriously have to run with the rookies?

Yeah I know he was testing the car out, let me have my joke.

That looks really, really good. Flows very well with the lines of the car, especially now with some paint on it.

"No show-stoppers," said Dixon after climbing from the car. "It's a little bit different, looking through something that is so thick. I thought it would have messed with distortion a lot more, but there's nothing like that; no problems with reflection. Obviously we'll run a little bit later to see how it is in a more dusk setting, and then again tonight. But the weirdest thing is just how quiet it is – you don't have any buffeting; the car is very smooth, like you've gone to a really luxurious, dampened car.

"We'll need some cooling, because you get no airflow through the car. But kudos to IndyCar. There are definitely things we can improve on, but [they've done a good job, and hopefully we'll find some more things tonight."

Seems from a visuals perspective, the test was successful, at least on the oval (where it'll be the biggest in terms of impact if you ask me).

quote:

Dixon was most enthusiastic about the windscreen after his final run, which took place in the dark, meaning that the track had consistent light levels across a full lap.

"I changed visors and stuff [after the earlier runs] so I don't know if that had anything to do with it," he said. "When we did the earlier running, it was in the worst transition between extreme sunlight to dark transition behind the grandstands, but just then, when everything was the same light, it just felt easier to see in general. I don't know if we thought there were going to be any glare issues at night with the lights, or when you're flickering past them, but I didn't notice any of that."

Oh dip! I didn't notice that but you are 100% right. That must be why the teams didn't have anything there in testing.

I dug it up and they are made by a small dutch company. It looks like the new panel uses full RGB lights, so they can do pretty much whatever they want with them, albeit at a low resolution.

Interestingly, it looks like Indycar is also working with them to develop various cornerworker lights, including big automated 360 degree light pylons and cornerworker triggered flashing LED panels you can mount on walls/fences (probably woulda helped at Bathurst...)

Those flag lights are already used in F1, it's a really good thing to have and making it more standard is cool.

Right but making them much lighter and more flexible would be another important step forward.

Love the look with the windscreen, doesn’t take anything away from the car’s design.

Can’t wait for the season to start again

I like everything about that video.

Are those lap times on the wheel? If so then the reduced downforce seems to be costing them a second a lap compared to qualifying trim last year. Worth it and then some if it means the cars can race.

Yeah all the cars have the same dash displays with tons of data on them.

The real test will come in about 2 hours when the cars get on track together for the first time

Don't forget about live streaming today and tomorrow!

If I'm thinking the same sound you're thinking, that sounds like the reverb coming back off of the outside wall. Either way it sounds awesome.

Though I legitimately wonder how much of that was due to them not pushing it due to lack of replacement parts.

Or how much of that could be changed with different tire compounds.

It looks like now that more cars are running in anger the lap times are coming down to be very close to the last two years, just with a very different driving style.

Figured I might as well put this here. We showed up to the track long after they'd given out all the wristbands for the autograph session, but since the crowd was tiny they let people line up without them. We ended up going down the line that had Penske, Foyt, Carlin, Harding, Juncos, and RLL.

Josef and SiPag blew me away. They were first and second going down the line and both of them made a big point to talk directly to / interact with my daughter. I mean, I get it, sitting signing hero cards and series-provided paper probably gets old, but for them to be reaching out for high fives and asking if she "likes how fast the cars go around the track, like fighter jets" just made her day (and mine).

She also got a big kick out of meeting Lyn St. James. She's only five and has only really started paying attention to who's who during the last year or two, so "a girl race driver?!?" is (unfortunately) a novel thing for her.

That's pretty awesome, drivers love kids and they know that the future of the sport depends on bringing in new fans. Power told me he actually wants like 3 more kids which made me laugh.

Just don't let her meet Danica or Pippa because that could be the end of her appreciation of IndyCar
