quote:"No show-stoppers," said Dixon after climbing from the car. "It's a little bit different, looking through something that is so thick. I thought it would have messed with distortion a lot more, but there's nothing like that; no problems with reflection. Obviously we'll run a little bit later to see how it is in a more dusk setting, and then again tonight. But the weirdest thing is just how quiet it is – you don't have any buffeting; the car is very smooth, like you've gone to a really luxurious, dampened car. http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/147288-dixon-encouraged-after-first-windscreen-test

http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/147290-first-windscreen-test-a-successful-first-step-frye Seems from a visuals perspective, the test was successful, at least on the oval (where it'll be the biggest in terms of impact if you ask me). quote:Dixon was most enthusiastic about the windscreen after his final run, which took place in the dark, meaning that the track had consistent light levels across a full lap.

Double post, but I want to point out something interesting here: https://twitter.com/marshallpruett/status/961714472174809088 The hoop display isn't a 7-segment anymore, but a matrix. e: https://twitter.com/marshallpruett/status/961785612129918976 iospace fucked around with this message at 04:43 on Feb 9, 2018 |

iospace posted:The hoop display isn't a 7-segment anymore, but a matrix. Oh dip! I didn't notice that but you are 100% right. That must be why the teams didn't have anything there in testing. I dug it up and they are made by a small dutch company. It looks like the new panel uses full RGB lights, so they can do pretty much whatever they want with them, albeit at a low resolution. Interestingly, it looks like Indycar is also working with them to develop various cornerworker lights, including big automated 360 degree light pylons and cornerworker triggered flashing LED panels you can mount on walls/fences (probably woulda helped at Bathurst...)

Those flag lights are already used in F1, it's a really good thing to have and making it more standard is cool.

Right but making them much lighter and more flexible would be another important step forward. Love the look with the windscreen, doesn’t take anything away from the car’s design. Can’t wait for the season to start again

I like everything about that video. Are those lap times on the wheel? If so then the reduced downforce seems to be costing them a second a lap compared to qualifying trim last year. Worth it and then some if it means the cars can race.

The real test will come in about 2 hours when the cars get on track together for the first time Don't forget about live streaming today and tomorrow! http://racecontrol.indycar.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ4Ux3MiqeU

There's something about the sound that engine made as it came up to the top of the RPM's in 5th that I adore. It gets this sort of twinning whine or hum that just sounds so good.

If I'm thinking the same sound you're thinking, that sounds like the reverb coming back off of the outside wall. Either way it sounds awesome.

Or how much of that could be changed with different tire compounds. It looks like now that more cars are running in anger the lap times are coming down to be very close to the last two years, just with a very different driving style.

https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/power-again-calls-for-indycar-to-increase-horsepower-on-ovals-1003752/ Team Penske’s 2014 IndyCar champion Will Power has again suggested that the series should consider running the ovals at the same boost levels as in road/street-course trim. (also a great photo of Power) https://www.motorsport.com/indycar/news/carlin-satisfied-with-first-oval-test-day-in-indycar-1003770/ Despite suffering electrical gremlins, Trevor Carlin says his team is satisfied with its first day of testing an IndyCar on an oval – but said Charlie Kimball and Max Chilton were “shocked” by the reduced downforce from the new aerokits.

Leist got up in the marbles and glanced off the wall. SDR is a decent but far from perfect replacement for a scanner. Audio quality is better but it has an odd habit of disconnecting randomly.

Yeah that's what I was using since I couldn't find my headphone splitter. Only problems being low audio levels in general, and I definitely need to program in the expected frequencies because manually jumping around is very slow. That and the random disconnects.

Figured I might as well put this here. We showed up to the track long after they'd given out all the wristbands for the autograph session, but since the crowd was tiny they let people line up without them. We ended up going down the line that had Penske, Foyt, Carlin, Harding, Juncos, and RLL. Josef and SiPag blew me away. They were first and second going down the line and both of them made a big point to talk directly to / interact with my daughter. I mean, I get it, sitting signing hero cards and series-provided paper probably gets old, but for them to be reaching out for high fives and asking if she "likes how fast the cars go around the track, like fighter jets" just made her day (and mine). She also got a big kick out of meeting Lyn St. James. She's only five and has only really started paying attention to who's who during the last year or two, so "a girl race driver?!?" is (unfortunately) a novel thing for her. That's pretty awesome, drivers love kids and they know that the future of the sport depends on bringing in new fans. Power told me he actually wants like 3 more kids which made me laugh. Just don't let her meet Danica or Pippa because that could be the end of her appreciation of IndyCar
