Which army are you interested in.

TBH i've been bouncing back and forth between Maggotkin, Pestilens and Legions of Nagash. Maggotkin would be a natural extension of what i'm already doing in 40k with Nurgle, Pestilens would be as well with the added benefit messing around with the Skaven like I always wanted too in WHFB, and Legions of Nagash because the Undead and Nagash himself are one of my favorite parts of both the AoS and WHFB settings (alongside Chaos and Skaven).

The Path to Glory stuff should be included in those tomes. (Minus Pestilens cause it came out before Path to Glory.)

Heh. Was just watching the video of the Shadespire game between the Fyreslayers and Skaven. The GW employee at one point constantly calls the Fyreslayers Dwarfs. Before realizing his mistake and correcting himself to Duradin.

Like I can imagine unofficially none of them actually call the races by the stupid new names.

Yay another one. Our first meet up is in March and I'm excited to report on my first game. Not sure how well I'll do.

I have a Starmaster, 10 Saurus Warriors with clubs, and 20 Skinks with spitters and bucklers. I'd say my performance would depend on my opponent but I have so little versatility ATM that I think my only option is to hold the enemy with my Warriors, teleport my Skinks around either holding objectives or harrassing backline stuff, and using my Slann to A) buff my Warriors, and B) arcane bolt and faux-arcane bolt with his artefact, potentially dealing 2D3 mortal wounds a turn.

How does cover generally work in this game BTW? Do you get a +1 to your save just from being on a terrain feature?

I finally broke down and got the Seraphon SC box. Are there any trap options I should be aware of before I start assembling them, or any quirks of unit/formation building I should know? I have never played a game of AOS, I just like how they look. I'd like to use them eventually, so if there's an option I can accidentally pick to make the unit illegal that seems like something to know ahead of time.

I can't think of anything you can make illegally in there.

You have the 12 Saurus Warriors you can make, the 8 Saurus Knights.

And then you can make one of these three things.

You can use the army builder for everything, but that doesn't give you rules. It includes all the scrolls for each individual unit (like you could download from their site) but not battalions AFAIK.

Yes but to actually see the warscrolls for your formations, you need to own the relevant battletome or whatever.

The Aos app is actually pretty great and I wish so badly that 40k had one. The $2 is worth it imo. You don't have access to battalion warscrolls but you do have the scrolls for every unit and points for everything.

You still have to buy the battletomes, either digitally or physically, but you had to do that anyway. The app does give you the option of paying for just the battalion rules you want a la carte but that is what actually seems bad.

Out of curiosity how are Pestilens right now? They seem poorly regarded by the community at large but, thanks to their start collecting box, seem absurdly cheap to collect. I like them thematically as well but I'd prefer not to put myself in a bad situation if I decide to go with them, particularly if Maggotkin and LoN are also appealing to me.

Trip report: Carnosaur model kicks rear end, Saurus Knight and Saurus Warriors models are 15+ years old and not great. The instructions for the Saurus Warriors literally mentions to cut off the part of the legs that used to slot into the base. They're definitely more spindly than I thought they were. Not nearly as fun to put together as I was hoping.

There’s apparently some hacks you can use to get more out of the box. Most notably you can get a free troglodon using a spare base, green stuff, and some modeling skill.

(Haven’t tried any of this but I also just bought the SC box and was looking for things to do with it).

Plague monks are pretty good basic infantry and the plagueclaw catapult is decent artillery, but I think the Pestilens book has been overshadowed by the Maggotkin book now. It would be a fun and thematic army to play with the bonus that you can play them freely in a Maggotkin army, if you end up not liking the way a rat army plays, since they have the Nurgle keyword.

If you already have the box I'd give it a shot anyway. The Carnosaur is a fantastic looking thing, just make sure you dry fit every piece. A few of the fits aren't immediately intuitive, and there are a couple (well hidden bit still there) gaps you may want to identify for filing.

I'm sure my dissatisfaction with the Warrior sculpts is me being spoiled by high customization and thicc model factions from 40K. A Riptide these ain't.

The warscroll will always tell you this info.

quote:

Some units of Saurus Warriors wield Celestite Clubs, while others are armed with Celestite Spears.

This specific unit can't mix weapons. Model them how you want just make sure you have it clear to your opponent when you play "this unit is all spears," or whatever.

Conversely, some units can mix and will you usually say "Some models in this unit are armed with X, others carry Y. They may choose to use Z instead." like Ardboyz.

Thanks for the heads up! Can I paint each saurus and/or cold one in different colors or patterns to break up the monotony of painting the same model over and over? Or is that frowned upon? Realizing that the Chaos forces are more fun to paint than the matching tidy Order forces...

There’s a compilation called Hammerhal and other stories which is a good intro. Call of Archaon has some good stuff in it but there’s some stuff in there that doesn’t really make sense if you stop and think about it. There’s some clever ideas you could knick for your own warbands and stories though. Bladestorm also had some nice ideas in it. Lots of hammer porn though. But I like hammer porn. Desperate last stands, heroic struggles etc, the usual fun cheesy stuff.

You occasionally come across stuff where it’s obvious the author was told to push certain models or factions. You roll your eyes and it’s usually over fairly quickly apart from in one point in Call of Archaon.

I think I found a nasty bullshit list for 1k Legion of Night:

Vamp General w/ Outflank trait, Spell: Spirit Gale, Chiropteric Cloak
Banshee (outflanking w/ LoN ability)
2 x 3 Spirit Hosts
Terrorgheist (Outflanking w/ LoN Ability)
2 x Morghast Harbingers w/ Halberds (Outflanking w/ LoN Ability)
980 pts

Basically only the hosts start on the table, parked by all four of your gravesites so they can regenerate as they get shot or damaged from spells. Take second turn or wait until you have it so you don't hit the double turn and then outflank everything.

Terrorgheist and Banshee scream, Harbingers have a 3d6 charge, Vamp can try the charge or hang back but when he gets off Spirit Gale (ideally on a horde) he can suicide in, pop the cloak and then all attacks back at him are causing MW to the attackers on 1s or 2s.

Should be a crippling alpha strike. Whatever is left has to deal with the Harbingers, Hosts and Terrogheist in combat.

Danimo

You need some battleline for that list. Zombies/Skeletons/Direwolves. Otherwise seems fun. If you drop the hosts for battleline it works but becomes riskier.
