In regards to phone chat from earlier, this was me just now:

Call user, call user's boss, call outside resource, call user, call boss, call user, call boss.

Basically user was having an issue with a hosted service that should have been working, but wasn't. Everything looked good on our end, spoke to user's boss to get outside contact, everything looked good on their end. User tried again and its working now. But boss had a work around in place and took it out and I had user test again to see if things still worked with the bandaid removed. Then let boss know everything seems to be working fine.

I can only imagine how long this would have taken to get resolved over email. Over the phone took me about 25 minutes.

I had an end user call a user who sits near my office to see if I was in when I didn't pick up their call to my cell phone rather than the helpdesk line.

Once they verified I was here, end user called my cell again and I didn't pick up.

They then had another user from that remote office call the helpdesk and I answered because my sysadmin is on lunch and my new helpdesk tech doesn't start until monday.

The end user then called my cell again and I didn't pick up.

As far as I'm aware their issue still isn't resolved.

Yeah, except it’s more like a year now :negative:. It just picked up about 6 months ago once we got someone to take over software support that I had been putting most of my time into after our last guy got fired.

I’m supposed to be doing a lot of ERP stuff and cross training to be backup on Salesforce, hopefully that actually happens soon. Right now I’m technically IT but doing more financial stuff.

I came here from desktop support, before that helldesk, before that field tech. I haven’t been doing a huge amount of IT stuff recently but I still shitpost here because I’ve been here so long and I’m hypothetically IT (still called IS here).

I asked my manager if I’m going to be doing more resource intense stuff like this after these next few weeks, and if so that I wanted to get something with more oomph. He’s getting his own computer upgraded as well.

As it is I’m getting a lot of trouble with memory leaks, crashing, freezing, and one particularly bad macro takes long enough I can go to the bathroom while I wait for it to run. 20+ minutes on the biggest report.

We can and do run massive MS workloads that can also take advantage of non-traditional MS services like Lambda, DynamoDB, etc.

But you should probably stay with O365 for email if you like your Outlook.

If you already utilize MS heavily for your on prem infrastructure then Microsoft will often make it much more economical to go with Azure as part of an ELA at a significant discount. That drives a lot of the Azure interest in our customer accounts.

On the subject of pay and market rate I always have to laugh when someone tells me I should accept less money because I’m asking for more than the market rate. If that’s the market rate then you shouldn’t have any trouble finding someone qualified to work for that much, so why are you wasting time trying to convince me to do it?

If a prospective employer comes back and says “we just can’t afford you, sorry,” that’s a bummer, but at least it’s honest. “Other people will do it for this much, so why don’t you?” is basically just gaslighting. If that was true you’d have already hired one of them!

Actually, the light is at the end of the tunnel. One of our ERP developers that actually knows what he’s doing is pretty much done with an automated version. The customer just decided they wanted a change done last second, though, so I’m doing them one last time as a backup. Of course, I was the backup last month too, but a lot of work has often done since then. The VPs and controller are happy with it, except they realized that the way projects and work orders are set up they need to pull by project rather than work order. So either it gets done on time by the dev (not unlikely) or they get their reports from me a week late because don’t put in change requests the day before delivery, dickbags.

Yeah, absolutely poorly coded. This was my first time using Excel for anything but lab reports and I’ve built this from scratch. As a bonus it’s mutated in a lot of ways that make it worse because they go “actually we want this too” and don’t give me enough time between iterations to fix it to be better. The biggest one is 75MB.

I don’t hate Excel, I could probably get really good at it, but I enjoy development. C#, C++, Java, that kind of stuff. That’s my eventual goal (or webdev, I just have no experience there).

I've been fighting this battle a bit myself recently, because while I would say I'm pretty good with Excel I am definitely not on the level of a BI Analyst and to this day some of the reports that our old BI analyst has set up that just run fine forever are impressive to me. I just got Jenkins running on top of Kubernetes. It's pretty sweet. The jenkins master is speaking to the cluster and creating slaves to run the build jobs on as the builds are requested.

Then the slaves are capable of communicating to the Kubernetes cluster as well to query information, issue deployment rolling upgrades, building more containers, and everything else you'd ever want it to do.

Kubernetes authentication and authorization is incredibly confusing and difficult to read the documentation for

If I could do that and start making $130k at 26-27 years old I would need to buy a new interview suit, if you get my drift.

The benefits are fantastic here ($1500 deductible for a couple, $170/mo, $20 for doctor / mental health, $40 for urgent care / specialist, 10% after deductible for ER/Surgery/Whatever, 6% 401k match), but I would probably jump ship for $20-30k more. Especially if I can get something remote so I’m more flexible about moving, don’t have to commute, and can be there for my wife if she has a bad mental health day.

Also, while my code is bad, this thing has a 6300u and 8GB of slow RAM. My i3-4130 in my cheap unemployed college kid era computer is faster.
