I really feel like Journey and Abzu crib the most from SotC in its simplicity and environmental storytelling while eschewing the gameyness also.

Yeah, and the difference is that the movement in Journey is fluid and well controlled, and it’s considered a modern classic and a must play, and the movement in Abzu is sluggish and unintuitive and that’s why nobody cares about Abzu. If Moving Around is your only gameplay mechanic and you don’t just NAIL it, then your game sucks.

SotC released in Oct, 2005, so I was 17, graduating High School on my way to college, and had never owned a computer. I probably had logged less than 200 hours of PC gaming, with lots of that being LAN parties after school, so yeah, nobody was talking about Frame Rate anywhere near me. We were too busy downloading wallhacks for Counterstrike or trying to Jump-Pad high five in Unreal.

The remaster of MGS3 also doesn't have Snake vs. Monkey.

One thing about SotC that I've noticed that some people don't like is how awkward Wander seems, especially when he gets flopped about. The thing is, that's intentional. It really drives home that he's not an epic hero and he's not a trained fighter. He's probably never even held a sword before this. He's just some guy who's extremely desperate to bring his loved one back to life and is willing to do literally anything to make that happen.

I also like how Mono's relation to Wander is deliberately ambiguous. Is she his lover? His sister? His childhood best friend? Who knows? It doesn't really matter. She just means a lot to him and that's all you need to know.

Yeah, it was a generation ahead of its time and pushed the PS2 to its absolute limit. I could feel my PS2 groaning and I was worried that it was going to eventually take me out with the shrapnel.

I'm enjoying the SOTC remake a lot, but the one thing that keeps standing out to me is the animations. The animations seem stuck in the ps2 era, and I totally understand why. When the game play of each collossus is so closely tied to the animation of them, it makes it nearly impossible to change them and make them better.

But it really illustrates how far games have come in the past 10 years or so. It's easy to take things for granted when you're seeing little improvements year after year.

A lot of stuff seems stuck in the PS2 era, but I think that's ok. Bluepoint could have polished the gently caress out of everything, but I think they took the best route by just adding a new coat of paint. People are very serious about SOTC, and if Ueda was involved with the remake I'd say go hogwild. Add new stuff polish things up etc, but he wasn't and I think it was wise of them to take the safe route. I think the animations at times look dated, but also have more personality than a lot of modern games, and that's something you don't want to gently caress with. Also they weren't just a relic of PS2, they were seriously amazing at the time it came out.

If you haven't played TLG, you can see just how far Team Ico has come with animation since SOTC. It seriously has some of the most beautiful animation I've ever seen.

When MGS3 came out, it became one of my favorite games ever. It came out at a time when widescreen HDTVs were just starting to become mainstream, though, and I was sad that it didn't have a widescreen mode. I had a 30" widescreen 1080i/480p HD CRT (drat thing was hilariously humongous and weighed literally 250 pounds) and I knew that other PS2 games could be set to widescreen. Among others, games I knew could do that were SotC, Resident Evil 4, and Dragon Quest 8. So when the PS3 remaster/port came out I was extremely excited and it didn't disappoint. Being able to play it in 1080p on my PS4 is something I'm really looking forward to.

The weird thing about that collection is how schizophrenic the trophy difficulty was. MGS3 was a very easy plat but I looked at the trophy lists for MGS2 and Peace Walker and didn't even bother trying for those plats.

Couple of thoughts on Shadow remake upon finishing. Any reservations I initially had about it were rubbish. It's basically perfect and they knocked it out of the park. I think they took the best possible approach and ended up with the highest quality, least polarizing product they could have made.

Still one of the best endings in a game.

Couple of things I hadn't thought about before Dormin is like, pretty loving weak? He gets his full form back and just gets owned by like 5 dudes immediately. His punches don't do anything and all it took to lock him away forever was throwing a sword in a pit. Makes you wonder why they needed the colossi in the first place. I wonder if that whole sequence was just to keep the narrative moving or if there is some significance to that. He does blow laser fire though which owns and is something I never noticed.

Also I forgot the horse survives.

The end credits music is awesome and very fitting and unique to the rest of the games music (which is also awesome obviously).

And it didn't give me the trophy for playing on hard :(

Judging by this, I'm fairly certain people were talking about frame rates of games years before you were born. (Nothing wrong with being young, I was almost young once.)

Well, the internet was a pretty different place in '05; from what I remember the reviewers docked it points for low frame rates at the time but the wider conversation among console game players focused very little on the frame rate, because we were all too used to bad frame rates back then. During the PS360 years frame rates became a big deal in online discussions because so many PS3 ports were lovely (looking at you Orange Box!)

It has to do with Ueda's background in animation, similar to how characters in Ghibli films are always tripping, scrambling, and off balance. It sort of an animator's tradition/technique that humanizes the characters and makes them relatable.

If you want to murder people with a hidden blade just know that's it's locked behind story progress. So maybe charge forward to that point if you get tired of leaving people writhing around in pain in the ground.

Also, just as a general note, you'll get ridiculously overleveled if you do all the side stuff as it becomes available.
