I have talked about my love for it before, but I really think it is because it was the last Ultima game with good combat. Even though clearly VII was a more intense experience overall. VI also represented possibly the greatest pixel art achievement for me personally other than Might & Magic III. Well at least in the pre-retro-indie-game days.

I haven't played it much, so take this with a grain of salt. The exploration and combat and such are good, but iirc it's all randomly generated and there's no real story. If that doesn't bother you, then you could probably have a lot of fun with it. It's more than worth the price tag.

However, if you prefer to explore every inch of a handmade world and kill a big bad at the end, it's not going to satisfy that itch. I personally find it kind of aimless and lose interest fast, and I don't fully understand why. Everything else about it is really fun.

Making more progress in Wasteland 1, mapping out Vegas is old-school PnP fun.
Found out that the howitzer* in Needles can be re-used if a DEMO skilled character touches it, and it seems to have a 33% chance/use of DEMO skill improvement.

CHRISTINE is my single NPC team-member ever since I dumped ACE after clearing out the blood cultist temple.
ACE started disobeying orders in the blood cultist temple so often I suspect he was a secret cultist....or maybe he was finally remembering all the times I gave him heatstroke to train up the MEDIC skill on my 4 main characters. Ended up dumping ACE back in Quartz, not in the sex-slave dungeon he was recruited from, but in the bar with overpowered for quartz gear equipped.

Right now, my main party consists of:
HOOPER, female indian, was supposed to be the team brains..... but sees things that aren't there**, decent with guns, good lockpicker though.
DETHRABBIT, female american, turned out to be the team's ranged weapons murder superstar, dabbles in disabling bombs.
XANDER CREWS, male russian, is the team demo specialist and also the team dancer. currently has 2nd highest party IQ
KILLFACE, male mexican, enjoys hitting things really hard with a chainsaw, is the team doctor and backup demo guy. Currently has highest party IQ.

*vaguely recall the howitzer exploding after 1 use if a non-demo skilled team-member used it in early playthroughs

Las Vegas in Wasteland is the most prominent example I can think of perhaps unsurprisingly but still of designers giving you the impression that every building was going to be identical if you explored it precisely to keep you from exploring randomly and stumbling upon things they only wanted you to find at a certain point. Or indeed perhaps the only such example of that, honestly, as I cannot think of another one. Generally the number of buildings to explore in any game city is either very manageable or the interesting ones are properly highlighted.

Or maybe there are far fewer buildings in Las Vegas than I remember but as a kid it seemed like they were endless ok

The Scorpitron isn't worth trying to kill until you get better armour, although the entrance to an important building is within its sight range.

The best way to kill it is to come back later with power armour and punch it do death.

The only bad thing about Wizardry 8: occasional battles that last over an hour because there are 10 different groups of Rapax scattered around the castle, and then they attack my bro Ferro Rapax and I can't have that because he sells me all the best gear, so I have to cut a path through the guys immediately next to me and I kill the one next to him (and I heal him) and then he charges another bunch of Rapax and doesn't leave quite enough of a gap next to him for me to get through and kill those off for him, so I have to go around the other way, and by the time I get there they've knocked him unconscious and I only just stop them from killing him and it's like an hour and a half later and I am tired and need to sleep

Oh I totally get it. I played a little of Wizardry I when I was too young to even know what it was, but Wizardry VI was actually the first Wizardry I owned (or at least could get to work; looking at you, Heart of the Maelstrom, and your booter disk), so I had nostalgia and "avenging my young self" determination fueling my playthrough from about a decade ago. Which is probably why I faltered in VII, I had never played it before and it seemed like the walkthrough was of basically no help in figuring out what to do if you did things in a different order from the recommended one.

Still no arguing that VIII is badass. Or that it managed to be the only final installment of the PC RPG HOLY TRINITY HAIL ULTIMA HAIL MIGHT AND MAGIC that was not seen as a flaming bag of poo poo upon its release (yet still fared very little better commercially).

Wiz 6 and 7 are brilliant (6 maybe more as a curiosity or for completion's sake, but 7 is legitimately great) but definitely a bit hard to get into. Skip to 7 if you're struggling, it's more freeform and has, you know, more than one tileset.

8 is very good but I don't think I'll ever play it again. It's so slow. Even when you're not in combat, laboriously trekking everywhere makes me long for the tile-based zooming of the older games.

There's a game came out last year that's like a modern homage to wiz 7 with all the improvements and accessibility tweaks that you'd expect from 20 years of learning, name has slipped my mind though

Ultima 6 engine adventure games were pretty fun, not sure why they haven't been mentioned in the ultima chat.
Ultima 8 did realistic looking caves amazingly well, it needed 5 more months of polishing (pentagram spell system) and really should have had smaller models of everything for a
bigger visible on-screen view, but the one thing ultima 8 did well, no other modern game has managed. Ultima 8 had perfect jumping puzzles. The avatar would refuse/shake
his head on 1st attempt of a impossible jump, and the mouse cursor getting longer or shorter depending on the jump was a good visual aid too.

Wasteland 1 update:
Scorpitron is dead within 3 rounds of combat, melee guy lost 1/2 his health rushing the Scorpitron but never passed out.
Did no skill grinding, just ran to darwin village and bought 1 sabot rocket + 3 additional mangler rockets. Noticed that CHRISTINE never missed with AT weapons in previous attempts vs Scorpitron, so CHRISTINE rocked a RPG-7, with a mix of LAWs & Manglers for the non-melee team members. Came at Scorpitron from south side, combat started with Scorpitron 41' away.

Uuuuuuuuh

Yeah this is a thing i guess. That was only implemented awhile after the original release.

At launch and for a long time afterwards the avatar would jump straight in to any of the 8 compass directions you were facing by a fixed distance with a bounce at the end. Ultima 8's jumping puzzles were a hellish nightmare.

That was only post-patch. Pre-patch you basically had 8 directions and two pixed jump lengths plus the running jump and so you had to carefully place yourself, guess the landing spot, save, test your jump and reload (which took ages back then) after the inevitable death. All that was made extra difficult by a curnucopia of moving, crumbling, sinking and disappearing platforms that were also mostly patched out. Even post-patch it is possible to miss some jumps though.

Regarding the caves, thank god they looked good because the game was almost entirely made of caves. Bleh.

The bit that really got me was there are huge chunks of plot missing. Like the infamous birthplace of Moriens, which they apparently forgot to implement and so to continue the game you had to skip that and go on to the zealan temple (and post-patch they'd basically just rewritten a sign so you'd know you had to carry on), and also a chunk of the sorcerer's plot.

Wiz 8 offered a "fast paced" combat option (continuous) but then didn't actually make it much faster just more chaotic.

I've been slowly working on my own homage to the series and this old gif is my idea of a proper continuous combat option. If Wiz 8 had edged a bit closer to M&M 6-8 it would be a lot smoother.

Recently I've gotten bogged down in numbers hell. Its easy to be blithe about the hundreds and hundreds of numeric values that need to have some semblance of balance to each other in a CRPG but it is a lot to wrangle. Like even getting everything to the state where it can be balanced is a lot of work. Much love and respect to those old devs with tiny teams who had to figure all this out while trying to get their game to work with no middleware on ancient computers.

That's the speed mod that just cuts the animation times in half which significantly improves the speed of battles. The old Wiz8Fast is pretty buggy and only effects movement speed so it's not sufficient on its own.

Wasteland 1 update: in the sewers below Temple of the Mushroom cloud, found some laser weapons.
Groups of cyborgs are the toughest enemies I've encountered so far in the game, because the cyborg enemies seem to have high damage resistance to anything less than full auto 7.62 attacks.
Mangler rockets from Darwin village weapons vendor are the answer though. Mangler rockets have been way more effective than LAW & Sabot rockets for me.

Challenge of the Five Realms is on sale at GOG for $1.49 until february 20th. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy hard time limits in RPGs.
