I've been pretty busy My school and their organizations are starting to use my photos. It feels good to see your stuff up there like that. I need to play around with more horizontal framing, they said it was easier to put up on the website.

Two things happened this weekend. I was recognized by the person who lets me volunteer to begin with for the hard work and dedication. I was also asked to take head shots and a group photo for the cheer team. This was two separate incidents from two different people. I've never done anything like this but I'm more than confident I can handle it. After making sure I don't step on any toes. I haven't considered about charging for my services which is still fine, I just don't want to interfere with the people who's job's it is to actually do this. I'm just volunteering. Some shots of the past week: Also, buying a grey card was the smartest thing I've done this year already. I didn't get the memo halfway through the week. DJExile posted:I'm not sure where your aperture is in this picture but it's waaayy too closed down. The rest are solid though! I had to get further back than I was used to, so I had to shoot wider. I think that mixed with the fact that I fixed my ISO (because varying exposure was killing me in post) and shutter speed, it only left the aperture to deal with light. I agree, the lack of depth of field takes away from it. I was hoping it wasn't too distracting. Thanks! Here's a different one I put in a request to shoot a "real game" at my college coming up next weekend. Toronto V Tijuana FC. I'm hoping that I can get credentials. Here's a question while I have people's attention. How do you deal with people choosing competitors photos over yours? Someone that comes out to the games, I have no idea if they pay her, but instead of a few keepers, she gives them the whole loving card. Uploads them to her website for download. No attempt to edit it at all it seems. I think it's because she gets it to them so fast. I'm not upset they chose someone else, the photos are just...they break a lot of rules I don't think she got away with. A lot of negative action etc. I understand learning from photos that work, but this just seems to reward speed over precision. I'm not trying to sound petty either, she doesn't affect me or what I do, I'm just curious because that's something I'm undoubtedly going to have to experience soon. Rejection. Edit: turns out she’s a volunteer. That explains the data card dump style. She just likes to take pictures. Cool, just like me. Soulex fucked around with this message at 23:06 on Jan 20, 2018 |

By radically different, you really mean terrible and underpowered, but yeah, it does give Cassell a different look than most other arenas. I bet it would look great with a set of big-rear end strobes in the corners like in the NBA arenas, the backgrounds would get real dark.

First wrestling show of the year tomorrow, getting back on the slowmo video train with my cheap Ebay shoulder rig! Here's the last two I shot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCuL591VV6o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EKkf_sSSsU I'm really happy with the cage work in the second one (note they're long videos but awesome and there's synthwave as the soundtrack) I've been trying to get the same kind of angles and looks I get with my stills and I think I've been succeeding for the most part.

Bang3r posted:First wrestling show of the year tomorrow, getting back on the slowmo video train with my cheap Ebay shoulder rig! Those look good. From an editing standpoint, I would mix the songs up because 25 minutes is way too long to listen to a song (if you're new to that type of music anyways). It also would help transition between fights so that each fight (which has it's own tempo) can be better brought out. I always used music when I was editing video because it adds so much. Also, use slo-mo for effect, not as a niche. Sometimes it is more impressive to watch something in real time than it is to watch with a higher framerate. Things like slaps and impacts yeah, letting the moment breathe. I'd avoid the whole running in slo-mo or 'chariots of fire' because unless it's dramatic (like a tag team member running down the ramp to aide his partner when all seemed lost) it seems off because we don't move like we're under water. It also lets you use nat sound which is missing and you can feel it. You want to hear those slaps and those thuds. Something you could do (especially if you're only working with creative commons music) is use the music type "Epic" or "Theatre" and build a fight around that. It's the type of music you'd hear from Lord of the Rings except condensed down into a smaller and more manageable form. I totally dig what you're doing though so please don't take my criticisms harshly. I always loved feed back when I was editing videos full time and hope it's the same for you. So I think I stumbled into my first photography job. One of the people at the last basketball game and I started talking and he has been shooting my college for over 20 years. He owns his own business and his portfolio is actually impressive. He already mentioned taking me on possibly in the future for events he can’t make. He also told me to stop working for free. That part is gonna be hard. I don’t really have a portfolio and feel I’m a few sports away from having a good one. This feels like bullshit. Like I’m gonna be pranked. I never thought a passion could be a vocation. Not like this.

I know nothing about this sport, but I like this one. Last practice before the real show kicks off in march. Dark hall (ISO 4000 and it was still underexposed) with downlights are not that fun to shoot in. Soulex posted:Thanks. It's kinda new to me, but I played baseball so it's same thing except pitchers have to throw it underhand. Pretty good stuff. You're doing a good job with color in what looks like a challenging environment. #3 might be a touch hot - your camera might've gotten confused with the dark background. I see what you were going for with #4 with showing the pass, but I don't think the action and involvement is quite there - definitely not as good as the rest of your frames. Don't be afraid to crop in a little closer on #1 - match what you did with #3 in really zeroing in on the interesting stuff. I had an unexpected chance to shoot a varsity girl's basketball game on Sunday. The outlet I used to shoot 2-3 games/week for ran out of capital and now only covers games they get contracted for through parents groups, boosters, etc. It was a nice surprise to get to shoot some sports again -- this one was senior night and the game that clinched the conference championship, so it was a lot of fun. 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_1 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_4 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_6 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_7 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_9 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_10 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr 2018-02-10_GVBkB_Sboro-v-Lnon_12 by Nicholas Kneer, on Flickr

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, that one photo was a bitch to edit. It didn’t feel the same if I cropped it too tight. If I went too wide, it had too much of that player encroaching. I found that if I took away that other foot, it really subtracted from it and left a lot of negative space above her. I’m also a sucker for the passing photograph but yeah, it’s definitely one of my lesser ones. It was a tough game as it didn’t score high and I had a ref that insisted on standing in front of me for a lot of the game. Also thanks a bunch for noticing the colors, they have always been a point of contention for me (these guys have been super helpful) and that just means I found a good balance. I love the emotions and crying. I don’t have the best camera (5d mkiii) but it’s still good. I plan on upgrading eventually and then buying a slave thingy so I can set it up remotely on goal or something. I always try to white balance before the shoot but it always comes out either a little too warm or too green and I still have to edit it. I might just need to get a bigger grey card. The one I have is the size of a credit card and it helps but it’s not precise. Is there something anyone could recommend for white balance?
|
# ? Feb 12, 2018 20:30 |

A small grey card is fine. Your camera doesn't have to focus on it. Switch the lens to manual focus, hold the grey card close enough to cover most of the frame and then shoot.
