A pretty interesting channel on life in the Soviet Union from someone born in the early 1970s: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClXTAMdHwvWdmFyOlQmEtpQ

From what I've seen it's good-humored and good-natured and focuses mainly on bread and butter, everyday life issues. Critical a lot of the times, but nuanced and talks about the good along with the bad. It's interesting because the comment section is full of communists and anti-communists and it's surprisingly well behaved!

There's a series on Brezhnev / Andropov / Chernenko that is mainly him recalling how these successions of dinosaurs made him excited because when they died, kids got the day off of school. Then when Gorbachev came into power, he was disappointed because Gorbachev was young. He also stopped watching T.V. when he moved to America because of the commercials.

The way he describes the KGB is less as an overtly repressive force (compared to the Stalin days -- and as long as you didn't mouth off too much in public about the government) and more like annoying busybodies who'd hassle people at a daytime matinee because :backtowork: why aren't you in the factory, you hooky-playing parasite!

That was especially the case under Andropov, who headed up the KGB under Brezhnev. He recalls Brezhnev as the grandfatherly sort, and oil prices were high so living standards were pretty good. He was also a kid then so there's a lot of nostalgia.

He grew up in Kiev and they had three T.V. channels, two local Ukrainian channels and the state channel from Moscow. At 9:00 every night the state news program would air on all three channels. They had a joke that went: a man sees the news on channel 1, so he flips it to channel 2 and it's the same news, so he flips it to channel 3 and it's the same news, so he flips it to channel 4 and there's a KGB officer staring at him like, "hey comrade, don't get any funny ideas."

I always heard the joke as "In Soviet Russia there are two television channels. Channel 1 has state propaganda, Channel 2 has a KGB officer saying "Turn back to Channel 1!"'

ice cream is a very good reference point for most people in the former ussr because: a) it really was better and b) the reason it was better was due to strict quality controls which no longer exist (and in the west, never did)

the stakanchik and plombir made by private companies today are pretty much the same as their soviet antecedents, because why fix what isn't broken

and they export to china. my eyes widened when i found them in a convenience store
