I'm only up to October 2002, but out of the 76 shootings that occurred I have a good amount of data on the weapons used, means of acquisition, and the motive for the shooting. The important part for this particular discussion is that only 11.8% of school shootings were committed with legally owned weapons. I confirmed that 22.8% used weapons that were stolen (not every news story has the details, as a lot of these shootings were isolated murders of individuals or had no deaths at all, and the list even includes stuff like a bullet randomly hitting a building from an unknown source and shooter), but 36.8% had a confirmed underage shooter. Considering that recent magazine or firearm bans in America have very low turn-in rates, you probably wouldn't see a huge decrease simply because nobody is going to be turning in their poo poo. I can post more of the data I've got if anyone actually has a serious interest in it.

Our culture where people want to gently caress their guns is a major problem, and it's the "MA GUNS!!!" nuts that quite frankly make poo poo worse. Yes, we will still have problems because there are illegal guns out there, but if no steps are made, then nothing will ever get better. Having the ''Well Actually,' argument be, "well yes, we COULD do THIS, but that then THIS will happen so whatevs" is the loving worst. I used to say I have no problem with 'responsible' gun owners, but if I had a hobby or interest that literally kills kids and results in mass death on a bi-weekly basis, I'd like to think that I might stop supporting the loving industry that causes this poo poo. I'd like to think I have the ability to think about poo poo for one second and use goddamn empathy and reasoned thought. I love comics, but if comics somehow killed people all the time and me being inconvenienced a little would result in less people dying, then I'd have no problem getting my comics a little late.

How are you defining legally owned here? If any underage person steals their parent's or neighbour's gun would you consider that not a legally owned gun?

In terms of motives for the shooters, I have a big post in another thread on that but 22.4% were directly traced to a dispute over a specific incident that involved one of the parties drawing a gun and shooting, while 13.2% involved a shooter without a definite mental illness coming back to the victim at some point after the incident and shooting them. The longest gap was 10 years, when a student who was sexually abused returned and sniped the teacher who molested him from the bushes.

If that were actually true*, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion. *Requiring someone to be licensed to purchase or operate any type of firearm as well as requiring all firearms to be registered in the jurisdiction where the owner resides wouldn't end gun violence, but it would help.
