I heard this about lag bolts too. I didn't really believe it until I saw an electric company lineman installing a new transformer on a pole across the street from my house doing it. Just banging them in like nails.

I've seen wood screws where the first quarter inch or so of the screw is smooth and you're supposed to get it started by hammering it in until the thread touches and then screw it in the rest of the way. I don't see the point since it seems to be more hassle than it's worth to have to use two different tools.
