It's also much easier to send a volunteer army abroad to die for empire because you insulate the general population from the consequences

I dunno about "proud," but the British tradition of being all-volunteer prior to WWI was down largely to national defense been seen to that point at primarily the responsibility of the Navy, with the Army more existing for colonial campaigning, getting into slapfights with France, and occasionally massacring protestors.
