I love Tinderstauf as a character. He's just so smarmy and ingratiating to the point where you so desperately want to humiliate him, just to see that oh-so-superior mask crack. Also wow, I forgot how Volfred's first portrayed when you meet him face to face. Much more direct and commanding than I remembered. I really should replay Pyre soon, if only to refresh my memory on some of the things coming up in the near future.

Let'en my post flyen true
: Before I get started with this update, I came across something interesting:

: I often do a handful of practice Rites with Sandra before I go into any big game or any major update. I don’t want to lose any of the for-real Rites because the game won’t stop for me if I do and will take the stain of my failure with me throughout the remainder of the story.

: When I loaded up against Sandra this time, I was given this:

: So, now we know just a little bit more about Sandra. That’s nice.

: Anyway, moving on:

Gfy

: Great Opportunity – Gameplay

: As usual, our allies that did not participate got themselves a bit of extra Inspiration to bank the next time they do. But, for a handful of us…

: I had explained Ti’zo’s perks before, but, for posterity, the ones available to me are the two second-level perks Safe Return and Titan’s Rage, and the first-level perk Moon Sign.

: Ti’zo has a unique weakness in that casting his Aura will also banish himself. This isn’t really an especially damning weakness because his Aura is massive and it covers an enormous area when it’s cast to compensate, but it’s still rather annoying: there is never a “good” time to Implode, because when you use it, you’re either deep in enemy territory (and thus trying to get a dunk) or you’re trying to defend (and thus you probably need more manpower to deal with the opponent’s offense).

: All that said, I’m gonna go with Safe Return. The less time we’re down players, the better, and it’s a real kick when my player is only down because he was playing the game.

: What I’m going to do next for Ti’zo is going to be up in the air a little bit….

: Interesting verb use.

: Gilman’s got some pretty interesting perks to work with. His two first-level perks are Valiant Return (if Gilman’s entire team wipes, then he returns immediately) and Avenging Aid (after banishing an enemy, one of Gilman’s teammates returns immediately).

: His second-level perks are, from left to right, Stunning Claim (once per round, once Gilman salutes his enemies, all of them are frozen in place for three seconds); Heroic Stand (if Gilman ever loses a teammate, his Quickness improves while they’re gone and he gains limitless stamina); Quick Draw (after using his Slash, Gilman can immediately Slash again to return to where he was); and Greater Cleave (Slash’s area-of-effect is significantly larger).

: And finally, his level-three perks are Seized Chance (whenever Gilman gets a kill, his Glory increases by ten for ten seconds) and Vigorous Slash (after using Slash, Gilman immediately recovers all stamina).

: Personally, it’s not really a contest as to which tree is better. The left tree is all about banishments and one salute, but the problem is that they all depends on his own team being banished, and also, I don’t really like saluting. Salutes don’t have the shortest animations, and that three-second bonus Stunning Claim could afford me would be lost almost immediately when I use it because I’m spending so long saluting.

: The solution to that would be to switch to a teammate to take advantage of everyone’s stillness… except the tree that has Stunning Claim gets stronger based on the fewer teammates Gilman has active.

: The right tree, meanwhile, is all about getting kills. I’m not especially good with Gilman, I’ll admit, but that’s on me, and I feel like I should work on getting myself better to take advantage of Gilman’s crazy perks and bonuses he gets if he lands a successful strike. On top of that, Vigorous Slash doesn’t even need to be a kill, and he’ll regain all his stamina.

: And finally….

: As usual: her first-level perks are Swift Flight (Increases Pamitha’s flight speed) and Winged Fury (for five seconds after a kill, Pamitha moves 30% faster).

: Her second-level perks are Shrike Dash (Pamitha can dash in rapid succession, and with less cost to her stamina); Sleight of Wing (whenever Pamitha salutes an enemy, she immediately swaps places with her nearest ally); Fell Swoop (while casting her Aura, Pamitha can trigger a burst effect that banishes nearby adversaries); and Relentless Pursuit (if Pamitha is banished while Winged Fury is in effect, she returns twice as quickly as normal).

: And her third-level perks are Greater Celerity (Pamitha gains a straight +8 buff to Quickness) and Natural Superiority (Pamitha gains a straight +4 buff to Quickness, Presence, and Hope).

: Looking over these perks, at first, it seems like a tougher call between the left tree and the right tree. The first-level perks between them both is tough to say: while Pamitha uses very little stamina while flying, and can thus do it for a long time, the game deliberately doesn’t say how much faster she goes while flying, compared to it telling us straight-up that she’ll move “30% faster” with Winged Fury.

: However, I’m not fond of the fact that Relentless Pursuit requires Winged Fury to be in effect – of all our allies, it should be hardest to banish Pamitha most of all, because of her ability to fly and the fact that her casting her own Aura makes her invincible. And while Natural Superiority may seem more attractive than Greater Celerity, it’s typically better to assign roles in games like these (i.e. defense; offense; quarterback; goalie; whatever) than try and make any character a jack-of-all-trades because then they’ll be a master of none.

: Also, gosh darn, with all that Quickness, and with Fell Swoop, Pamitha would have an easy time penetrating the enemy team’s defenses and swapping places with someone that could do more damage to their pyre than she could. She’d be pretty tricky to deal with.

: An adequate performance back there.

: Adequate?

: Yes. Adequate, for the next part of our Plan. Go, have your Reader there consult the stars. See where they take you next.

: I’ll give you a hint: It’s further north. It’s going to be high up…

: …and it’s going to be cold.

: We’ll see. Come on, my friend, let’s have a look outside then.

: I get the feeling that Hedwyn isn’t so okay with Volfred either. Which is cool with me; I don’t mind hanging out with My Best Friend Hedwyn to shittalk Fred and his broad, sturdy shoulders a little bit.

: That plan Volfred mentioned… I just want you to know, I don’t know what he means.

: We’re here because we’re going to be free again. We won’t be living out our days as exiles. That’s the only plan, as far as I’m concerned.

: But, there’s always a catch, right? We’ll see what Volfred has to say.

: Anyway, I’ll leave you to it. No matter what, we’re getting closer, thanks to you.

: Fred said to look north….

: …I must be heading in the right direction.

Gfy

: So now you see it for yourself. You are summoned to the north, where looms Mount Alodiel, and at the very top: the Fall of Soliam.

: You confirm the stars indicated this exactly.

: Volfred, sir… how did you know?

: <I, too, can read, my boy. Forbidden though the words may be.>

: I feel like I’m being challenged.

: He turns back to Hedwyn.

: Your Reader’s skills, while rare, are not unique. But, as I said, I’ll let him do the job. I see that you have something special going here, which benefits the Plan.

: What plan? I thought this was about our freedom.

: Oh, fear not, my boy. It is, indeed. Plenty of time to tell you all about it on the way. For now, however, you look like you can use some rest. And for that matter, so can I. If you’ll excuse me.

: You sense your companions are exhausted from their recent travels. Given the road ahead, you agree it would be best to take the night to recover as much as possible.

: Well, uh… that was a unique development. I’m not sure who I should be more wary of, between the Harp that’s giving me mixed messages, or a Sap that’s giving me one clear one.

: In either case, there’s not much left to do here. We’re coming up on Mount Alodiel, and when we arrive, the fate of our caravan will change completely.

: At dawn, Volfred is already up. He reveals to you a pathway through the woods, into the cold lands to the north, beyond which lies your next destination.

Gfy

: You get clear of the woods at last, and arrive in lands grown cold in the shadow of Mount Alodiel. You will have to make it all the way to the top. In a moment of respite, Volfred calls everyone together, to discuss matters pertaining to the Rites, and the plan to which he alluded.

: You banded together with a common faith that freedom from the Downside is not impossible, am I correct? But, let me ask you something….

: What does freedom even mean to you?

: He looks in your direction as he asks, defying you to answer. You cannot sense his own thoughts on the subject, and only know the truth of how you feel.

: drat, that’s a pretty hard-hitting philosophical question.

: Speaking personally, I’ve never really had my ‘freedom’ put into question. I’ve had the privilege of being born in the free world, and never have I really felt that my options, with regards to where I want to be, or what I want to do, or who I want to love – or, to put it into Pyre’s perspective, whether or not I want to learn to read – were ever in any real danger, or put into question, or anything of that sort. So, I’ve never really considered what it means for myself to be ‘free.’

: You know, outside of competitive gaming :newlol:

: But, when I put it that way – that I ‘never had my freedoms threatened’ – then, I guess, out of the options presented to me, my answer would be to live without fear. Of course, this is one of those questions where there is no wrong answer, and ‘freedom’ can be defined differently by anyone. ‘Freedom’ may mean something different to someone living in a place where their liberties are often suppressed, and they may consider ‘freedom’ to be something that I’ve taken for granted.

: I’m going to continue on with my own answer, but I’m interested in hearing what ‘freedom’ means to you, if you’re willing to spare your two cents.

: You tell Volfred that freedom means living without fear, and not being subject to persecution or retaliation for one’s thoughts and choices.

: He considers your remarks for a short while.

: …Good answer, my boy. I happen to agree. Fear takes hold in freedom’s wake. But, fear is a natural impulse, is it not? A common feeling we all share from time to time, a deeply rooted impulse there to aid our judgment, and spur us on to acts of courage.

: If not for fear, I doubt we could accomplish very much in life. And, just now, we stand upon the brink of accomplishing something vital.

: He then turns his attention to the whole group.

: Now, let me tell you all what freedom means to me.

: To be able to indulge one’s curiosities and passions, at least the ones that cause no harm to others, without the constant threat of judgment and reprisal. Freedom means not being made a criminal for what you know, or whom you love, or what you choose to think, or not think.

: He looks out toward the distant mountains.

: Within the next few days, your time in exile could come to an end. You could see the Commonwealth once more.

: And you would be exalted there! Given the highest honor. The opposite of how you got here.

: But you would not be truly free, I think. At the least, you would become complicit to an ancient system that would deign to cast down others such as you.

: It is a system whose well-intentioned founding principles have long been lost. And the Eight Scribes, if they are out there still, have made quite clear they shall not intervene firsthand.

: He turns to you and everyone again, looking to each of you.

: Long have I wished to gather such a group. That, together, you might see that seeking freedom only for yourselves is too modest of a goal. You share a higher calling now.

: The plan, then, is this: We free each other from the Downside through the Rites, then we meet up on the other side. We organize.

: Each new moon at dusk, we join together at the Spiral Sanctum. We need as many of us there as possible. My agents on the other side shall explain the rest….

: Just so…. I am asking a lot. You do have other options. Deceit, however, is not one of them. The Reader and myself… you know by now that we can see through it.

: Some more than others.

: But, you need not be a part of this, nor is it in my interest to coerce you. You may go your own way, if you wish. Live out your remaining days here, like so many others. So, if anyone among you prefers that… if you cannot see yourself continuing to strive together in the Commonwealth, as you are doing here, then… speak now.

: Volfred pauses for a time, examining each member of the group. No one stirs.

: … Very good. Some of you consider yourselves friends, some others not. But all of you are bound together through the Rites, and are integral to our Plan. Remember that.

: You seek true freedom? You will not find it waiting for you in the Commonwealth. But, together, you can bring it about, both for yourselves and others. That is my promise.

: Then he lets out a long breath.

: Volfred turns towards the mountains, leaving you to consider what he said, and plot the wagon’s northward path.

: So, there you have it: Volfred’s looking to revolt against the government that put us all down here. Like I said, the Commonwealth is a bit of a gilded cage: everyone wants to be there, but if you don’t follow their rules to the letter, this is where you’re sent. Considering that one of those rules is ‘don’t learn to read,’ it’s hardly what you or me would call a paradise – it’s in a sorry state and it needs help.

: Whether those in charge think it wants help or not.

Gfy

: Beyond lies Mount Alodiel. I suggest we make camp here at the base of the mountain, for we shall need our spirits and our strength to make the ascent.

: Interesting that Sandra is looking for more meat for the pile so soon after Jodariel, but I won’t say no to what is basically free swag. And yeah, I’d imagine, after all that, someone might have something on their mind that they’d want to talk about.

: Huh, not the person I was expecting, though. What do you want, Fred?

: There you are, my boy. There was something which I wanted to discuss with you, in private.

: Volfred stares at you, rather intently, as if reaching out to you… and then…

: Uh… well, being a telepath was not my number-one assumption when I first learned to spell my own name, but hell, I won’t turn it down.

: <Those such as we… We are not limited to reading pages from a Book.>

: <Though, your ability in this I sense is nascent, still. Mere flashes, uncontrollable.>

: <I see, as well, now, that they haven’t told you, yet. Your friends. And that explain a lot.>

: And let me guess, you handsome bastard, that Readers such as you are fair game?

: <I had wondered why you would insist on pressing onward with this group, in light of this. The answer, then, was plain. You simply did not know, or fully realize.>

: <They did not deceive you, by the way. There is no reason they would know, themselves, other than Tariq, who shall not influence your thinking in such matters. Rather… I had expected, when at first we met, that you already knew the truth of this from having read the passage in the Book of Rites, which states it plain…>

: <…Perhaps you have not gotten to that part just yet.>

: Hell, that’s easy. Put me in, coach, I’m ready. Oh wait, I AM the coach! I make the decisions!

: But seriously, is there any reason why I can’t? Let’s just tag in and out a few times, Volfred, and we’ll both be eligible, according to the very word of the Book.

: It is plain that you are not in adequate condition to conduct the Rites. And this group values you as Reader. I wish only to ensure you understand what you are getting into, here.

: Despite whatever hopes and dreams and promises might have been shared… I do not think the Rites can help you to return. If that is what you had in mind.

: So, once again… I invite you to depart, and I will see to it that you are compensated.

: Do you understand?

: Fred, buddy, after that whole spiel about us banding together to revolt against the Empire, you of all people should understand that I’m not just here for myself right now. I don’t care for your money – the only thing I’d spend them on down here is Talismans and drugs, and if I can’t compete in the Rites, then those are useless to me.

: Besides. Everything that I’ve read in that book so far, and everything that I’ve learned about this world, all points to the conclusion that the impossible is far from it. If some dude with a boat can kill Plurnes by ramming his boat into her, then surely there’s a way for me to swim up a river.

: You understand the words of warning, yet, just the same, you choose to carry on. There is more that you wish to achieve on this journey than freedom for yourself.

: I admire that, my boy. Then, very well.

: Know that we have much at stake here, in this, anyway. Much more than just a shot at going back into that Commonwealth, which cast us down here, to begin with. It sounds like you intend to stick around. Then, we’ll have lots more time to chat, as we ascend the sacred mountain in the coming days.

: Until then….

: He strides out of the wagon then, leaving you with your thoughts.

: Heavy stuff. There’s a pretty good chance that we’re boned for good, all because we know how to read.

: Maybe Sandra knows how to lighten the mood a bit.

: I just learned that you and I might have a little more in common than we at first figured. How’s it going with you?

: How very kind of you to visit me again like this, oh lovely Reader! For I was just standing about, in the blackness of this void, thinking, it would be most pleasant if something were to happen, for a change.

: There was a long period of time that this incarceration of mine failed utterly to do anything but bring me peace of mind. Not much of a punishment!

: I invite you to imagine an upbringing among the Sisters of the Arch. Living on the outskirts of civilization… your days all full of training which could kill you, or just cripple you for life.

: How do you suppose I lost my sight? Through glorious battle with the Scribes? Or in a careless sparring session with my master?

: Ah, but, I’ve not forgotten enough just yet. In any case, at first I welcomed the prospect of not having to struggle every moment to survive.

: I’d imagine two centuries in a pit with people you’re not fond of might do that to you.

: It did not help at all that the Nightwings of the early days were the stodgiest lot you could imagine. Obsessed with obeying the Book as strictly as they could.

: Some of them started to remind me of myself, I think, when I was young. Such idiots, the lot of them….

: Ah, but, what am I saying, lovely Reader… I shall not bore you further with such matters. I would have bored myself to death back then, if only I could die.

: Sandra either needs a hug, or she needs a punching bag. I don’t know how receptive she’d be to the hug (also, she’s incorporeal), so, how’s about I let her smack one of my teammates around?

: Oh, that can be arranged. You need but name for me the one you have in mind.

: You ask Sandra to administer one of her special trials for Hedwyn.

: Oh, you must mean that nomad boy… so innocent, that one. I should have a lot of work to do with him. Then, let us bring him forth.

: Soon, Hedwyn appears, in heed of the summons.

: Hey, my friend, what’s going on?

Gfy

: The apparition Sandra appears, and unfastens her mask.

: Listen well, boy. You answer to me here.

: …Understood.

: You are a fool. Do not talk back to me. Your reliance on your friends is such a burden upon them. Let us see what you can do without their aid… save for that of your lovely Reader, there.

: Fool – Gameplay

: Say, what’s that you have there?

: Not a bad Talisman at all. This will put Hedwyn in an interesting position: he doesn’t have Rukey’s speed or Jodariel’s presence, so he isn’t the best choice for either offense or defense, but with this Talisman, he’ll be firing off power-casted Auras like a machine gun, and every successful hit will turn him into a speed freak for a few seconds.

: It’ll basically make him favourable for all situations, rather than as my second-option. It isn’t quite as good as Rukey’s ‘I-own-this-lane-now’ Talisman, at least in my opinion, but it’s still quite a strong one.

: Mount Alodiel is just up ahead. Whatever conclusion is awaiting us on this journey… it’s in our sights.

No one left uncured.
I got you.
Hedwyn's Golbracer is great because it basically turns him into a trickster counterattacking-defender.

I always, always raise Hedwyn with all of his party-buffs and put him in the back somewhere when he's participating. I also never really liked banishing as an offensive strategy, because it's kinda fiddly and also for one other reason we won't see for a while, but Hedwyn in the back casually powercasting everywhere can shut down an attack with ease, and then the enemy finds themselves in an attacking position, down a man and with infinite-stamina-Hedwyn sprinting at his nice moderate speed towards their Pyre. Even the base two-second buff is enough to get Hedwyn the whole way across the field on the rest of his bar afterwards. This becomes hilarious when you pair Hedwyn with high-pressure forwards like Pamitha, Gilman, or another person, because rushing with them causes the enemy to have to mostly be trying to counterattack you, which means Hedwyn is often more easily able to do countercounterattacks, and for maximum giggles you will probably be able to revive a fallen teammate or two in the effort, meaning you can keep the pressure up if Hedwyn can't quite stick the landing.

He's been here a long time. I'm guessing he's been the patron for multiple Nightwing groups who are now his conspirators on the outside. If you stay, he may have the chance now to leave, himself. I bet he's been testing you this wholevtime to see if you have the balls to carry on the Plan when he is gone.

It's never quite made clear, but I don't think a Reader needs to stay separate from the rite. They are probably allowed to perform - none of the other triumvirates we've seen have had a specific dedicated reader, though that might just be because other than the Fate (and briefly the Pyrehearts) they each only have one defined character. As long as Volfred is capable of donning the mask, there's nothing saying he can't both play and read for his team.

He did imply that we are not capable. "Not in adequate condition". We can choose the specific nature of the reader's infirmity in a conversation later. There might not be a rule against Readers competing, but you would need to be able to put out the vigorous exercise to actually win the rite if there's to be any point participating at all.

On the Freedom question, when I played, I chose that it means nothing - I had my character in mind as quite a cynic who was largely there out of curiosity. Volfred's response was one of genuine pity, that she had so little hope for a better life as to not even define one. He still said he believed freedom to be living without fear; I think that's just his reason and he doesn't change it to match yours or anything.
If I were answering in my own capacity rather than roleplaying, I'd probably say freedom means to live without a master. Having control of your own life and not working at someone else's beck and call.

It's either that, or he's planning on playing himself. Not clear which, to be honest. I'm genuinely not clear whether it's simply 'Readers can't return' or whether our Reader is simply so hosed up from their time spent starving to death/dying of exposure that they're in no fit state to participate in the Rites. The latter is entirely possible, mind you; we were apparently so comprehensively hosed up when the original trio found us that Jodi wanted to mercy-kill us, and we've since learned she's not exactly the hard-hearted sort. (I wrote this up this morning and then forgot to post until tonight - Tenebrais seems to have beaten me to the punch on this point.)

As for Volfred's question, well, that is an interesting one! To my mind, a couple of the answers are the same, or at least subsets of another one - to be free is to have no master, because only then can one truly go where one wishes, do what one wishes, think as one wishes. One can still feel fear when one is free, after all - one may fear hunger or thirst, death or infirmity, whether one is free or a slave - albeit for different reasons. But when one has a master, their desires are necessarily subordinate to the orders of that master.

In any event, I had a couple of thoughts - first and foremost, that learning that those paroled from the Downside are held in the highest regard upon their return... now that's a weird one. I was kind of expecting the teachings of the Eight Scribes to be reviled topside - after all, what could be more antithetical to a society than a Scribe, when literacy is outlawed? And yet, instead, apparently everybody swears by their names.

On a related-ish note, it's certainly interesting that the voice that serves as our sports-announcer had such a conciliatory tone this time around. It made sense against the Yslach-cultists and the Essence, both of whom have plans for their freedom that seem to end well for nobody (except maybe themselves in the latter case). But Manley and the Chastity don't seem like they're even remotely as dangerous if they get loose. Perhaps there's more to this petty schemer than meets the eye?

Royalty is a continuous cutting motion

Tenebrais posted:

He did imply that we are not capable. "Not in adequate condition". We can choose the specific nature of the reader's infirmity in a conversation later. There might not be a rule against Readers competing, but you would need to be able to put out the vigorous exercise to actually win the rite if there's to be any point participating at all.

Didn't they mention earlier that the Reader was crippled by the journey down the River?

Of the options given "doing what you want" is probably the closest to what freedom means to me, but more for it's... mirror? opposite? inverse? of "not doing what you don't want to do", or as put in a way that at least sounds deeper: "That you are burdened with no obligations or responsibilities that you did not choose to bear".
That you care for those you care for, whether child, pet, elder, or something else, because you choose to, not because you you must, for whatever definition of "must" you choose to use.
That you toil and labour for your own reasons, not simply because the alternative is death.
I could probably produce plenty more platitudinous rhetoric but I have a feeling nobody wants to read that.

Let'en my post flyen true

: Earlier, Volfred called for a group meeting, presumably to reveal his plan in more detail. Instead, he reveals some bad news.

: Wait… what are you saying?

: What I’m saying, my boy, is that while you can indeed get yourself out of here, it can’t be all of you at once. We earn our way back one by one, or not at all.

: Whoa whoa whoa, kind of an important detail there!

: But, I thought… I swore that we’d go free, together.

: We may go free, together, yet. But it’s going to take time, and this is one the first phase.

: You, Hedwyn, and the others exchange glances.

: Let me make this plainer for you still. Here is how the coming days are going to unfold.

: Next, we’ll pass through Scribesgate. Only the worthy may pass through there, as your Reader could attest. If he did not merely skim that chapter of the Book.

: You are very presumptuous. I’d read more of the Book if there was more of the Book to read!

: Afterwards, we’ll reach the Fall of Soliam, and meet our adversaries in the Rites. They are to be the Tempers, led by the demon Ignarius. You’ll know him when you see him.

: Both you and they shall choose someone from your respective ranks. Then, once one of the triumvirates prevails, their somebody will be whisked home to the Commonwealth.

: Whisked home to the Commonwealth?

: Precisely. Once returned, our somebody is taken in, and clothed, and fully pardoned.

: It is interesting that the same community and government that punishes sneezing at the wrong time and place with eternal damnation would not only be okay with this procedure, but would reward and celebrate it so openly.

: Many of these details the Scribes themselves wished to be kept secret. Former exiles and the leaders of the Commonwealth alike have good incentive to protect those secrets well.

: …So, then, that’s it? We climb the mountain, someone goes back, and everyone else stays?

: For most of those participating in the Rites, yes, that’s it…. But I like your connotation, and indeed, for us, that isn’t it, at all. If one of us returns, it shall be just a step along our path.

: However… let’s let that sit for now. Gather your strength. We’ll talk again on our way up.

: Volfred leaves the rest of you to consider what he said. You have time now for your Vocations. At dawn, you shall begin your ascent of Mount Alodiel.

: This one took me some thinking, but it had a pretty modest and simple conclusion. Basically, I wasn’t really feeling the global bonuses since we had done that last time, and it came down to whether I wanted to forage for more junk, or to tutor a guy.

: I hadn’t tutored anyone since my very first Vocation, so I’m gonna do that. Money is nice and all, and you’d think that I might prefer the bonuses since we’re getting so close to somebody’s big day, but, at the same time… I just want to buff somebody and give them a bunch of Enlightenment.

: And who among us could use it the most, I wonder?

: Mae is on the cusp of a new level up, so… Mae! Let’s you and me hit the books!

: You sit down with Mae to go over some of the subtler aspects of the Rites, such as the state of banishment and how to return from it. You sense she is beginning to understand.

: With that tutoring session, Mae’s gotten herself a level up, and our available perks are the first-level perk Heightened Reflex (removes the start-up time before Mae jumps or sprints) and the two second-level perks Quick Fling (Mae throws the Orb much faster and further than usual) and Sudden Grasp (after a salute, Mae leaps towards the Orb if nobody is holding it).

: Of the three perks available to me right now, Heightened Reflex is probably the most attractive one. But, the third-level perk I’m working towards is Dark Vigor, where Mae doesn’t lose stamina while she’s holding the Orb. That’s a pretty big deal, so it’s not worth it to me to ditch out of this perk tree while I’m here.

: That said, I’m not a fan of saluting, so, I guess I’ll take Quick Fling. I’ll definitely take Dark Vigor and then I’ll likely take Heightened Reflex over Sudden Grasp later.

: With my tutoring done, we can proceed on our journey to climb Mount Alodiel and head towards our final destination.

Gfy
: Music: To The Stars

: Here before you lies Mount Alodiel, stretching far beyond your line of sight. Somewhere upon this mountain lies the only place from which you can escape the Downside.

: When you put it like that, it’s kind of a difficult-to-imagine place. We’ve been drat near everywhere in the Downside (maybe? We’ve done nothing but head north since the prairie; for all I really know, the Downside could be an entire globe), and our one and only means of escaping this special hell is right there.

: Your companions gather round again before Volfred, who stands tall as ever. Whether from the cold air or the subject now at hand, you sense a tension in the air.

: Now then, you all have many questions, no? I’ve done a lot of talking. So go on, ask away.

: But there is only silence. One question stands out in your mind, which you refrain from asking yet: If only one of you is to go free at first, who shall it be…?

: Go on, now, don’t be shy, who first? Questions.

: Why you, indeed, madam? That, I can explain…. You’ve seen the sort you stand against as adversaries in the Rites. What is it that they want, do you suppose?

: Depends on who you ask. Barker probably just wants a good party.

: They want their freedom back, of course. They’ll settle for it on the Commonwealth’s own terms. They’ll gain their freedom, and some cushy new responsibilities.

: Perhaps then they’ll have a hand in sending still more exiles here to join us.

: Think on it. The Commonwealth rose from the ashes of a fallen Empire thanks to the efforts of the first exiles who escaped this place via the Rites. It is the Commonwealth’s first and proudest tradition to honor those ones who live to redeem their transgressions. They have a certain wisdom, do they not?

: But as for you. I have been looking for a certain set of dispositions for a good length of time. All I needed was for somebody appropriate to show up, and to listen.

: That someone proved to be Hedwyn over there. He was tasked with seeking two trustworthy allies, an old buried wagon, and a Reader. He was invited to bring others for the ride, all different sorts. Gather enough help, and he and his friend could be free.

: Fred makes it sound like it was a suggestion, but throughout our trip in the Downside, Hedwyn made it sound like it was an absolute necessity. I wonder where the wires got crossed, if anywhere.

: Long story, but you know much of the rest. So then, why you? Because I’ve reason to believe you’re not the sort to play right back into the Commonwealth’s old hand.

: The Rites, as you have seen, are quite exclusive. You are imposters in this little party. You could be the ones to break it up.

: Now then, more questions!

: Your head is beginning to spin. You can excuse yourself or keep listening.

: We’re talking about not only our freedoms, here, but an entire cultural and governmental upheaval if we succeed. We should probably keep listening.

: Volfred’s explanations are a lot to take in, though you feel compelled to absorb as much of what he is willing to tell you at this point. He prompts further questions when Jodariel raises her voice again.

: Aah, I see…! Well, but that is simple, really, madam.

: You are chosen… you are qualified, I should say… because, as the expression goes, ’tis what the Scribes ordain. Though, in this case, the expression is quite literally true.

: Wasn’t it you yourself that implied that the Scribes might no longer exist? So, it came down to dumb luck, basically.

: When the Eight created the Rites, each one of them anointed certain other exiles to participate on their behalf… exiles who showed some promise of redemption. The triumvirates they formed have stood the test of time, replenishing their numbers as their individuals moved on or passed on.

: You’ve met them as they are today. The Accusers… the Withdrawn, and so on. The Eight Scribes also formed a special group, against which all the others would be judged.

: Music: Will Of The Scribes

: Are we… are we the bad guys? The Scribes created the Nightwings for every other triumvirate to compete against. We’re the golden standard for everyone else to meet. Which is hardly our fault that we got lumped in with Hedwyn and Jodariel, and I’d much rather this group than hang around Lendel or, heaven forbid, Udmildhe, but, from everyone else’s perspective, we’re basically the Final Bosses that the Gods themselves have selected and favour to win. Considering their very freedom is at stake here, that must not leave a good taste in their mouths.

: You bear their Books. Wear their masks and raiments. You need but show up to the Rites, you see. The others erstwhile jockey for position for a chance to take you on.

: Yeah, well, what if we don’t? What if we don’t show up?

: Then, you would deny yourselves a chance at freedom. And deny it, also, to your adversaries.

: This is a cute way of saying the story doesn’t progress when you aren’t playing the game, haha.

: Victory means nothing in a common Rite, then? Participation is all that matters?

: Not so, madam. Only the enlightened may regain their freedom. While failure can be an excellent teacher, the Scribe do favor the victor.

: So, basically, only characters that have a certain amount of Enlightenment are eligible to regain their freedom. Victory gets us a whole lot more Enlightenment, and tutoring will usher any of us forward in a hurry. This is an interesting way to work experience points into the story.

: So, you see, those who do not conduct the Rites, or do not prevail in them sufficiently, they may find themselves barred from the Liberation Rites. But… these are technicalities.

: The Nightwings disbanded years ago. Since then, no one has gone free. Yet still the other triumvirates pressed on, with fleeting hope that one day you’d be back. It’s been a heavy price to pay in all of this. Now… if you’ll excuse me, we’ll talk again some other time.

: Some murmur to themselves about all this as Volfred takes his leave. Other reconnoiter pathways leading up the mountain and present you with some options.

: Given their names, this seems like it would be a pretty obvious choice, but, that’s not how I’m doing.

: The last time we saw Mae on the field was back with the Pyrehearts, three Rites ago. It feels much longer than that! But we saw Pamitha in the last one, so, I’m going with her. Also, she, like Mae, has yet to steer me wrong.

Gfy

: You join Pamitha on her brief expedition to find anything of value dropped by those who tried to scale the mountain but did not succeed.

: Wait. I shall be joining you.

: What, now, I get two chaperones? But, sure, I’m game, whatever you wingless are into.

: Be silent, little bird, and fetch those trinkets and be done.

: My, so full of bitterness! You really ought to make the most of these last, precious moments that we share.

: And you ought not to mince your words.

: I, the first one out of here?!

: Sometimes, it’s tough to tell whether Pamitha is being genuine, or she’s being a shithead.

: Of course! It’s plain the others pity you. You’ve been here longer than the rest of us, by far! Besides maybe that Volfred, though he seems plenty happy here, making his speeches.

: Okay, yeah, she’s being a shithead. One of the last things you ever want to say to someone like Jodariel is that they’re being pitied.

: How dare you… how dare you to presume. Nothing is decided as of yet.

: Oh, no doubt, no doubt! Though, if by some coincidence you do end up selected for the honor, I just want you to know something.

: Because, that way, you shall be free! Of me at least! And I, in turn, shan’t have to suffer any longer your hideous attitude, toward me and everything.

: At that, you intervene. Jodariel’s eyes burn with fury. But then, she calms herself.

: …I shall see you at the wagon, Reader.

: Pamitha scoffs as Jodariel storms off.

: …I swear, that one. Well, moving on! There’s something sparkling down there. Be right back.

: She swoops out of sight, leaving you alone there on the mountain. Pamitha soon returns with something that lay long-forgotten in the rocks below.

: Hmm. A potential powerful Talisman – we haven’t seen Moon-Drops since our match against Dalbert and the Fate. It all depends on where the Moon-Drop is spawned whenever we land a banishment. It could just as easily work against us, after all.

: Also, goddamn, all I wanted was a Talisman, and it had to turn into a whole thing. You’d think the two would just agree to say nothing, if we’re honestly all working towards the same goal, Pamitha.

: Interestingly, our path forks once more before we reach our goal at the Fall of Soliam. And unusually, neither of them have particularly foreboding names.

: Second verse, same as the first verse: the last time we saw Hedwyn in a Rite was against the Essence, whereas Gilman was with Pamitha when we went against the Chastity just one Rite ago. Also, Gilman would probably appreciate getting a good soak on his scales; it’s been a rather long time since the Sea of Solis.

Gfy

: AT LONG LAST!!

: The wyrm surges toward the waters of the cistern. You decided to join him for a brief excursion there after another hard day’s ride. You find him in a shallow pool, appearing very much contented.

: This knight… he thought he may never again feel freshwater’s cool caress against his scales.

: He sighs, splashing about from time to time…. Then, he turns his attention over to you.

: You, Master-Reader, are most kind. To take with you this wayward knight. He swears to prove him-self to you and to the rest.

: He knows that, soon now, someone may go free. He knows the choice of whom may weigh upon you heavily indeed. For it is you who ought to make the choice, is that not so? This knight, he heard it from the others, so it must be true!

: This knight’s penance isn’t yet complete. There’s much atoning to be done…. So, when rises the occasion to decide who ought go free, this knight wants you to know something.

: With that, Sir Gilman sinks into the waters. His tail waves to you to leave him be for now.

: See, the thing with characters as chivalrous and altruistic as Gilman, the problem is that I’m not certain he’ll ever consider himself worthy of his own freedom. We don’t know why he was banished here to the Downside, and it could be something as dastardly as multiple homicide, or it could be something as simple as accidentally scuffing the boot of some high-ranking Justice in the system. No matter what his crime was, there’s a decent chance that Gilman won’t ever think he’s worthy to return home because of it.

: As generous as the notion is, and if I weren’t writing this LP and depending on the thread for the big votes and decisions, I’m not entirely certain I’d honour his wish. Maybe I would for this one round, but the longer he keeps insisting he stay, the less I’d consider it, for his own good.

: All that said, he does get a reward for his chivalry:

Gfy

: You and your companions gather at Scribesgate, where the single narrow trail to the summit narrows even more, and falls under an archway carved of stone.

: Come along, now, everyone, and be prepared to speak your mind when you are called.

: Frankly, most of you still lack enlightenment. But we may pass together, much how we act as with a single heart and mind during the Rites.

: Well then, lead onward, Tariq.

: Please, follow me.

: When the last of your companions nears the arch, you notice someone standing high above, who then appears before you. She eyes The Lone Minstrel first.

: It is. Greetings, Celeste.

: And, how was your rest?

: Too long, Celeste.

: It seems your work has piled up in the meantime. You bring this many to the gate?

: Aye.

: Then, let us make this quick.

: She gestures toward the rest of you.

: Now, each of you, in turn, state who you are and what you seek whilst crossing Scribesgate.

: Do as she says, please, without questioning.

: Your fellow exiles exchange glances but quickly comply.

: Whoa.

: The woman bids him forward. The Lone Minstrel prompts Rukey to speak up next.

: They, uh, I am regarded by the name of Rukey Greentail. I just want to get out of here, I guess, with my chums, preferably. Go see Mama back home.

: I am Captain Jodariel. I do not truly know as yet what I am seeking, here.

: Oh, my name is Mae? And, I am here, I think, because the Scribes have called to me! It must be them, because if not, then who?

: (Ti’zo seeks to live up to the Nightwings’ legacy, and maybe see the Commonwealth someday.)

: Sir Gilman of the Sea-Dominion, at your service!! This knight is on a quest to find his honor! He… lost it at a certain point.

: Pamitha Theyn. I’m only here because my Sister’s here.

: You. I recognize you from the Nightwings of the past. You are not clad in the raiments any longer… I would know why?

: …I had my chance, already. The Nightwings that now stand before you… I travel with them as a pilgrim, now.

: I see…. Then, state why you are here, as have the others.

: My name is Volfred Sandalwood. I seek liberty for each of us, so that one day we all might stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the other side, and bring our freedom to the people there.

: She waves him by. Then, she turns to you, for there is no one left to go.

: Hmm. This pretty much purely flavour, but it gives me the opportunity to flesh out my character a little bit. All we really know is that I can read and that, apparently, I’m in no condition to participate in the Rites. So, maybe I’m a crippled scholar?

: Nah, that’s not very interesting. Where’s the strife? Where’s the drama? They don’t tell stories about old bookworms or farmers. Let’s give us some motivation; a cursed background and a bone to pick.

: In many ways, you were an outcast from the start, and suffered through your youth, never experiencing a parent’s guidance. Your exile was maybe something of a blessing, and it ultimately led you here.

: The one called Celeste continues to examine you, expecting you to add to your response.

: Building on the ‘my parents are dead’ background, choosing revenge would be the easy option. But, that’s also very cliché and overdone; what audiences want nowadays is redemption stories. Where a dude can go through the hell that is a war-torn, parentless childhood and make it out wanting nothing more than to see others succeed, in the hopes that what has happened to him would never happen a second time.

: The companions you have met here, who have helped you to survive, and to find kinship in the Downside… your priority is to ensure that they achieve their goals. That is all you wish, for now.

: The woman regards you for a time, then nods once, and waves all of you by.

: The Eight Scribes bid the Nightwings welcome here. Go forth with glory.

: And, Tariq…?

: Aye, Celeste?

: Be on your way, as well.

: The Lone Minstrel bows his head, and puts his hat back on. He does not look back at her.

Gfy

: From the top of Mount Alodiel you can see the distant Downside before you. You think on the many thousand leagues you crossed to reach this point as the sky grows dim.

: We have a handful of things to do before… the big moment. We might as well start as we usually do: by having a word with one of our companions.

: Jodariel’s answer to Celeste at the Scribesgate was surprisingly somber and… clouded, I guess is a good word. She must have a bit on her mind. Maybe talking them out will help her somehow.

: Jodariel appears to be prepared for whatever is to come this night. Though it is not yet dark, she is already in her raiments. Hedwyn soon joins her, also looking ready.

: Any sign of Rukey?

: None as yet. Complained about a chafing at the collar of his mask.

: Our freedom might be hinging on that collar, then.

: I am certain that it is.

: The three of you exchange glances, but nothing is said, or needs to be said. Soon, if Volfred is to be believed, one of your companions may regain his or her freedom.

: HEY, what’d I miss, am I late, is it starting, is it starting yet?!

: Easy, Rukey. We got a little time. It isn’t starting yet.

: How fare your struggles with your mask, Greentail?

: Feeling a lot better, thanks!! Just had to smash it repeatedly against a wall for a little bit. Put some of the old nerves to bed, there, for good measure!

: By dawn, in fact. If all goes well.

: If all goes well…? That’s one way to look at it, I guess.

: What are you getting at, Greentail?

: Well, it’s just… we might be breaking up the band, here, people. If one of us gets out. That’s been bugging me a while now. I thought we all were getting out of here at once.

: He shoots a look at you.

: :ocelot:

: Some of us, we might not be getting out of here at all….

: No…. Not if I can help it. We made a promise to each other, each of us. The four of us. We’re all getting out of here. I care about the others, too, I do. But, we’ve been here from the start. I want you to know… my promise is to you. And I believe you’ll do the same for me.

: So, it’s like this… if any one of us gets out, great, but it’s just a start. We’re going to do whatever it takes there, on the other side, to make it so the rest of us can get back, too.

: What, you think they’re gonna build a bridge down here if we ask nice, or something?

: I don’t know what it’s going to take. I just know we have to try.

: Jodariel turns to you.

: Reader. We shall find a way.

: She nods, to reassure you, and to reassure herself. Rukey nods his head, in turn.

: …Well, my friends? I think it’s just about time. Let’s go.

: One by one, they turn towards the door. The Fall of Soliam awats… a vital step in your quest for freedom, yet you feel in your heart that it shall only be the first.

: Hell, I don’t mind waiting my turn.

: Before we start the Rite, we still have a few things to do. Namely, the first is to check out that new page.

Gfy

: And finally, the last thing we need to do to elongate putting off the final Rite is to pay a visit to Ron. I wonder how he got past the gate – would Celeste have accepted ‘I wanna sell some junk’ as a valid reason for moving on?

: You’re here ’cause I got the lowest prices in all the Downside, am I right? And some of the new stuff I got in stock, you’re gonna get a lot of value there, an awful lot!!

: Is it gonna be the biggest and the best stuff, and am I gonna use it to win so much that I’ll be tired of winning?

: Also, you have the only prices in the Downside, as far as I’m aware. Which, I guess, that technically means your prices are, in fact, the lowest.

: Ron has three more Pinches of Stardust, which vary in price and in potency: one blunt goes for thirty Sol, but also raises the level of a Talisman by three. His cheapest pinch only costs five, so, I’ll go ahead and buy that.

: But, more interestingly…

: This is pretty useful for obvious reasons. If I’m ever in a spot where I think I want to reconsider my masteries and perks, this is what I would use to achieve that. At a modest twenty Sol per hit, this can be a very useful Plan B.

: Oh, nice, that’s one of them Scribe Snuff thingers, there, huh? One dab of those little guys and you’ll be, like, wooooo, know what I mean? They’re pretty popular! But I got my connections, and they got their connections, and THEY got THEIR connections, and they got plenty more of those! So, just come and see me and Dad here later on, we ought to have one back in stock!

: Ron, you’re a good guy.

: With nothing else between us and our first – and somebody’s last – Liberation Rite, it’s finally time to give the stars one more peek before we commence with one more game of Sportsball.

: Yes. Though, several of us have another question that’s been troubling us.

: You need but ask.

: …You said that one of us is going to return to the Commonwealth if we defeat the Tempers in the Rites this night…. What happens if we fail?

: Hedwyn, my boy. Don’t you see? The path to freedom and the path to enlightenment are one and the same. Do you intend to stray from the path?

: …No.

: Then, you have nothing to fear.

: What kind of non-answer–

: What, then, is to be done? The very same as if we achieve victory… we await our next such opportunity, and make the most of it.

: Tonight, our Plan is set into motion. We are united in our cause. We shall look as ever toward the stars for guidance, and seize upon our future chances, just as they arise.

Gfy
: Music: The Old Ways

: The Pyres burn, and each of the triumvirates is present and prepared.

: I concur. The Pyres burn, and each of the triumvirates is present and prepared.

: Then, anointed one of the Tempers! Come forth, now, and declare yourself, and pay any respects you have unto your adversaries, the Nightwings.

: A massive demon swaggers into view. He reaches for his mask.

: Music: Rage of Demons

: He takes notice of someone in your ranks.

: Hey, you!!

: He indicates Jodariel. She scoffs back at him.

: Lose the mask. Ain’t seen one of our own in ages, not in these damned robes.

: Jodariel’s hesitation is almost imperceptible before she moves to remove her mask, just as her adversary asked.

: Whoaa…! You must be new!

: Jodariel soon puts her mask back on.

: …Enough talk.

: Hah! I like you, Curly-Horns.

: Tell you what. Once we put out your lights, you come along with these guys. We’re gonna have a spot open. Only shame is I ain’t gonna be around to show you a good time.

: You’re betting on a horse with three legs, buddy.

: I should rather cut out my tongue.

: Oh, you don’t mean that. Our kind, we ought to stick together.

: Ignarius throws his mask back on as his allies snarl at the rest of you.

: Have the Nightwings reached a decision on whose behalf they shall conduct the Rite?

: The Lone Minstrel gets your attention in his subtle way.

: Reader… this is it. The first companion whom you choose shall be anointed to go free this very night if you prevail. The other two in the triumvirate shall lend their aid.

: As you may know, only the most enlightened in the Rites are eligible to go free. Not all among you may be ready yet.

: Now, Nightwings! I would have your decision.

: There is a minimum Enlightenment threshold that each of our characters must meet in order to be eligible to be pardoned from the Downside during a Liberation Rite. In the event that not enough characters meet this threshold – you require three in order to participate in a Rite – they’ll give it to whoever comes closest.

: And, because we’ve been rotating our roster fairly regularly, our options are… limited this time around. And even if Gilman qualified, he’s opted to excuse himself this time.

: Even though we cannot anoint anyone except Hedwyn, Jodariel, or Mae, the rest can still participate in the Rite to assist our chosen champion in their ascension to freedom.

Who will we choose?

Hedwyn has been our most stalwart, adamant companion, eager to see everyone achieve their freedom and wash their hands of the Downside forever. He has always had an optimistic approach to each and every obstacle, and he’s done everything he can to spread his unique, unwavering resolve among the rest of team on our journey here, to the Fall of Soliam. His crime is unknown, and all he wants is to return home to the Commonwealth and know the warmth of his love’s embrace once again.

Do we anoint Hedwyn?

Jodariel has a stern way with words and she isn’t the best at first impressions, but, even if she doesn’t want to admit it, she’s got a heart of gold and if anyone could be described as the ‘parent’ of the group, it would be her. She’s devoted to Hedwyn and his ideals and was the first one to welcome Mae into the Nightwings. Her crime is unknown, and not even she understands what it is she wants to gain from travelling all the way here – she’s been in the Downside so long that she had abandoned the hope of escaping when we first started, but now that freedom is staring her in the eye, she can’t bring herself to admit that she wants it.

Do we anoint Jodariel?

Mae has a spiritual connection with the Scribes and the world around her that nobody, least of all herself, can properly describe. She meets all challenges and peoples with a warm smile, a hearty dance, and some laughter, and she’s attuned to her companions so deeply that she shares in their misery as much as their happiness. She’s even taken to calling the blackwagon itself her ‘little brother.’ Her crime is unknown – Mae can sometimes have a difficult, or unique, time with words, and given the state of the Commonwealth, it’s entirely possible that her only crime was simply that she viewed the world differently.

Do we anoint Mae?

One of these three candidates must be chosen for this Rite, though the other two spots – support and defense – are available to all members of the Nightwings, including Rukey, Ti’zo, Sir Gilman, and Pamitha.

Should we succeed in this Rite against Ignarius and the Tempers, our anointed champion will be removed from the game.

Permanently.

Ten votes.
Choose wisely.

It's okay if you have any questions.

Let'en my post flyen true
Remember to vote for the other two companions we'll be bringing into the Rite as well! Our forward must be one of those three, but the other two positions can be anyone, including the other two characters that weren't anointed.

There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

Anoint Hedwyn. He gathered the group together and his brand of leadership is basically supplanted by Volfred right now.

Supporting him should be Rukey on assist and wide receiver, and Jodariel on defense. Let's keep the three companions together here while we release one of them onward.

Anoint Jodariel because she's mama bro and deserves it. She's also the most experienced and this able to set the revolution up for us to get to later on

Jodariel. Despite Pamitha’s bad manners, she did have something of a point in how Jodariel has been here the longest.

Hedwyn and Rukey can see her off. The last time they can work together, until they meet on the other side, if all goes well.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

Mae

Heswyn and Jodariel shall see her there.

Hedwyn, because I think he's the most likely to get a successful revolution going though I fear that he'll go abscond with his loved ones. Jodariel's a person of few words, which is fine but not really flashy enough for most folks. Mae... might actually scrape by if they go with an 'enlightened prophet' angle, but they are also a kid. Hard to say.

I got no preference for who the other members are.

Just your friendly neighborhood photobomb raptor.

Jodariel. I think she's more than earned her shot at freedom by this point.

As for who to bring, Hedwyn and Rukey. It's only fitting.

I'm going to abstain from voting, but when I played I sent Hedwyn back first: he was the one who brought this all together and appeared to feel quite guilty at learning we couldn't all escape right now. A charismatic speaker with a sense of guilt who has sworn to work hard to get everyone out was the person I most wanted working for us on the other side, and I knew he'd be there to organise whoever we let free later, too.
So I'm abstaining from voting in the hopes that someone else gets voted so I can see more of what it's like having him still in the wagon :sweatdrop:

Mae, because I think Jodariel would prefer to keep having the others back and Hedwyn would feel guilty about going first after promising everyone freedom.

For play, demons are slow with huge aura, so go with Pamitha (great attack ability that nullifies the huge aura advantage) and Rukey (can easily outrun them and snipe them if needed).

I'd kinda like to see more interaction between Hedwyn and Jodi before they leave the game. So, Mae as our chosen one.

Backed up by Hedwin and Jodariel. We got that nice Hope bonus, might as well use it.

No one left uncured.
I got you.
Is there a magic number of Enlightenment beyond which all exiles are considered worthy of Anointment? I always thought it was simply the top three.

The only time I think that logic applies is if you manage to show up with more than three exiles at the maximum rank, in which case all of them will be worthy.

That's it! No more hiding in tomato crates! It's time to show that idiota Germany how a real nation fights!

For pasta~! CHARGE!

Jodariel, Hedwin, Rukey.
Try and make Jodariel get the final dunk if at all possible.

I've got to say, :drat: making you delete your favorites from the game is a really neat twist.
