Kikkoman posted:I'm looking for suggestions of places in Japan for decently priced retro gaming. I lived in rural Japan 2010-2013 and built most of my collection in Hard-Off. Fukuoka has one retro gaming shop but I can't remember the name, never been in there. I think Manga Souko (is this Kyushu only? I live in Nagasaki) is really underrated, hardly ever hear it mentioned in the posts here and I find it has way better gaming selection than Hard-Off (at least in my part of the country). Fukuoka prices (Kyushu in general) will definitely be way less inflated than Tokyo, but I would still stick to Hard-Off and Manga Souko over Mandarake. Never actually been to the Mandarake in Fuks, could be worth a trip if you are in town. If you have family or friends here that you would be visiting, I also highly recommend doing some Yahoo Auction browsing and ship stuff to their address and just pick it up after. Even living in the countryside I find prices on the auctions to be way fairer If you pass through Nagasaki for some reason, there's a small shop near the Nagasaki Airport in Omura called Gemeru that has lots of retro stuff. I featured them in an article for an English magazine I edit here. His Famicom and SFC stuff hardly ever breaks 1000 yen per cartridge, usually it's far lower. Hardware prices are average. He can also do battery replacements in SFC carts with a bit of notice, usually takes a day or two if you can wait. He's also got a decent selection of PS1/2, Saturn, PSP, Megadrive, etc. as well as modern stuff if you want to buy physical Japanese PS4 games for some reason. Some pictures of his Fami/SFC stuff:

Unrelated but if there are any really strong people in Boston: https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/7yff7g/free_300pound_mitsubishi_42_professional_crt/ Looks like a 1024x768 monitor so not sure what this would be ideal for but thought I would post it anyway.

The listing says it does standard def TV signals so it can certainly handle 640x480. But also, that monitor supports VGA at up to 1280x1024 natively (although as we all know unless you adjust things that'll give you a slightly off aspect ratio, you'd use 1280x960 setting for proper 4:3). It handles all the standard PC video modes from 320x200 on up to 1280x1024 as wella s the SD analog TV modes.

Me being the gigantic nerd that I am couldn't believe how good the BIOS POST screen looked when I saw it rebooting one day; I was like "wtf that looks like dogshit on my TV with s-video out". I remember hooking a modded xbox 1 up to it to play Mike Tyson's Punch Out on it and it looked kind of weird though. Not sure why or what happened.

Why are there so many empty ROM sockets? Is the board semi universal and the Tetris ROM is just kinda small? Edit: yeah on common hardware. http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=797&gid=159 falz fucked around with this message at 21:01 on Feb 20, 2018 |

I was trying to play TGM with my sanwa stick and I kept accidentally hitting up and causing the pieces to drop immediately, maybe I need to put the square gate back on or something, I swapped it to the octagonal also I think I'm going to get one of those thingies that goes inside the stick and cuts down on the dead zone because the more I play the more that's bugging me

Even playing on a real machine it felt weird, it wasn't just me playing with the "wrong" one. Vs. Tetris on those hilariously short Nintendo sticks was... slightly better, but still weird. Was fun playing against my Tetris-skilled wife, and exchanging verbal abuse throughout it, though.

Go back to a square gate and if you want to continue using the sanwa stick, consider getting a heavier spring which will help avoid hitting up on accident.

Has anyone here had Retro Modding do the "Metal Jesus Rocks GBA v2" for them? I had an original style GBA with the ags101 screen but I sold it because the fact that it wasn't as bright turned me off to it. Now I see they sell one with a screen that does full brightness, and even has some speaker mod that makes it loud as hell. Just wondering if anyone here has one from them and your thoughts. They offer a clear gba shell which is getting me one step closer to my dream of a Space World GBA but they don't offer teal/baby blue buttons. Anyone know where I can get any?

I just broke that score by 130k, and if I wasn't getting lippy with the missus, I probably could have done better. But it'll be my first score submission!

Not terribly happy about the outcome but I wound up replacing my Blinking Light Win with a regular 72 NES replacement connector. Something was loose in that thing, despite how obviously tight plugging a cartridge in felt, and at least so far the standard connector being a little more flexible seems to allow me to futz around with it easier to ensure it eventually connects. When something didn't work in BLW there was jack I could really do about it. Of course eventually the standard connector will get bent out of shape but I feel at this stage that I can deal with that better than with whatever happened with my BLW.
