I kind of feel like the NRA is well on their way to seriously bungling this one. So far their play book isn't working and regular people seem pretty angry.

They've gone into pretty batshit propaganda (even by their standards) with putting Dana Loesch on full blast all the time in their videos the past year or so. Without the fear of a Democrat president / congress to take guns away keeping sales high the NRA has been banging the crazy drum a lot to keep using fear to sell. The short term is that they look worse than before when these things happen but whoever was talking about short-game vs long-game with the NRA was on the right track. As long as they get money and give it to politicians the public will just shift outrage to another subject in a week and that'll be that.

I don't know if the best thread within the VFW to introduce myself. My familiarity with SA is, kinda weirdly, with only one specific discussion; the D&D Trump thread. To which I'm addicted.

Anyway. In a post describing my desire to become more politically active, I mentioned some of my experience as a veteran and was referred here.

I served in the Army with a perfectly timed contract that allowed two tours of Iraq and six months in South Korea during a single 3-year commitment. I was in a reconnaissance unit during the invasion though, admittedly, being Big Army, we didn't do much reconn'ing. Upon returning home, I was excited to PCS to South Korea and the prospects of underage drinking my way through the rest of my time in the Army but, as soon as they saw me on the Peninsula, they were like, "Yup, send that dude's Brigade to Anbar."

Fought a little on the periphery of Fallujah and thought I was doing something until the subsequent year spent with a company of my closest light-infantry buddies discovering what actual combat was in Ar Ramadi. I then went to college and, after, joined the Guard, went to Selection to chase my life-long SF dreams and then never attended the Q Course because I'm a turd. End military career.

I try to stay open-minded politically, though I have pretty strong feelings at the moment.

After the Service, I was pretty gung-ho Repub guy, so much so, that I was flown to Washington, D.C. to enjoy a lavish experience and lobby my representatives in favor of the surge. Met George W., all the Cabinet members, etc; the second most resounding memory being that Karen Hughes had a smoking hot assistant who was not swayed by my goofy awkwardness and (lack of) swagger. I subsequently bestowed terrible luck on Presidential candidates by actively supporting Fred Thompson and Jon Huntsman.

Then, the issue of universal healthcare became a big debate and, literally, during a single conversation, my whole paradigm shifted. Someone had the nerve to tell me that the great nation that I defended "couldn't afford" universal healthcare. It took all the restraint I could muster not to kick the commenter straight in the groin. The idea that America was incapable of anything defied the very thoughts that kept me sane in Ramadi while I, and my buddies, otherwise thought only of a swift death or, at least, time with the portable DVD player in between daily missions and filling sandbags.

Since that conversation, I've become full blown snowflake, libtard. Though, not very active. And then this morning, I heard Wayne LaPierre sounding like an American ISIS propagandist and I took it as a genuine agitation against the country I love. So, I'm pretty energized at the moment.

Sorry for the wall of text. I suck with being concise. And, anyway, with subjects like these, it's cathartic AF to put words where they can be read by others. (Kinda) Sorry to make you all prey to my venting, especially without any other history here.
