due to music licensing stuff the intro videos and walk ins are all muted. silent footage of suakim's stadium fights in thailand, and now video of his teenage opponent sleeping which is kind of weird and creepy. tenshin's gym appears to have a life size statue of the guy from fist of the north star in it. he uses the monkey bars belying his actual child status. footage of suakim absolutely knocking dudes dead with his hands and elbows, followed by footage of tenshin looking about 11 years old and fighting. start the fight please. the video keeps on going. please start the fight. ok now it's intro time.

tenshin lands a punch and a saenchai handstand kick in a combo. kid is supernatural but suakim isn't giving him anything easy.

suakim's trying to fight right at the end of his range to make tenshin's counters miss, this has been an insanely tense fight and it's a shame suakim's going to be on the end of a japanese decision because this is a draw imo

i'd have it a draw too, maybe slight edge to tenshin. really cool fight.

yeah that was probably the perfect expression of high level karate vs muay thai https://twitter.com/Grabaka_Hitman/status/963016019789910016 i don't profess to follow muay thai but apparently suakim is only a "former" lumpinee champion because he had no real challenges, moved up two weight classes, and just demolished the champion at that weight a month ago, he moved back to his natural weight to fight tenshin. i want to see more from him and i hope he takes some more fights in japan.

I got curious and watched a couple of Suakim's stadium fights. He's got a loving monster chin, there's a few occasions where he walks right into an elbow and it has absolutely no effect on him. In December, he was ranked number 10 at 130lbs in Lumpinee, and Nawapon was the champion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj1-3NetteM Nawapon still is the champion (I guess the belt didn't change hands because it was an external promotion?), but Suakim unequivocally elbowed him to death. I really hope he gets more fights in Japan.

DO YALL WANT A BOXC posted:i know there's different rules for thai boxing specifically and all the different promotions are a nightmare of organized crime and corruption, but how many thai fighters would be world class if there was the equivalent of a UFC of kickboxing? It's a complicated question, because the rules as well as the culture produce the fighters. Generally in Thailand you see slow starts because everybody is fighting like 5000 times a year, and to allow gamblers to get their bets in. There's a greater emphasis on kicking at range and extended clinch work, so a lot of the traditional fighters tend to have a bit of a boxing deficit under kickboxing rules. What's interesting about KNOCK OUT is they use full Thai rules (although they break up clinches more often than you'd see in Thailand) so it's sort of the inverse of the deck stacking Japanese promoters have often done with Thais. In general, yeah there's loads of extremely talented dudes who fight dozens of times a year and have done since they were 8 years old that only a handful of people outside of Thailand know or care about. The guys who follow MT do so religiously and usually are the kind of people who go on holiday to Thailand to train. If a promotion sprang up tomorrow and had the intent of being the UFC of kickboxing, I'd say that below 120lbs 99% of the fighters would be Thai. Above that you get into the range where Japanese fighters have had success, there's been a small handful of Japanese stadium champions (I don't know how many, but it's less than 10 and the only ones I know of in the modern era are Hiroki Ishii and Takeda Kozo). Until K-1 MAX sprang up, a Lumpinee or Rajadamnern stadium title was the most prestigious title possible for a non-heavyweight. There's a bit of mysticism about Thais in kickboxing largely thanks to religious Buakaw fanaticism and it kind of muddies the waters, there's some cross over between talent pools, but it's not that extensive. Certainly at 155 there's a lot of elite level talent worldwide, and at around 145 there's guys like Wei Rui as well. Above 155 essentially the opposite would be true, most of the fights above that weight in Thailand are foreign fighters anyway. But between 125-155 I'd guess that like half would be Thai. This of course is sidestepping the question of ruleset which would completely change the composition one way or another.

Hey dunc while we're talking about MT I have a couple questions for you that I forgot to ask a while back - 1) What scoring system do they use for Bangkok stadium fights? When I went to Rajadamnern it didn't quite seem like it was the normal 10-9 must. 2) In the Bangkok stadium fights, I've noticed that the refs often step in after distance exchanges and give some kind of quick indication, without really interrupting the action. Sometimes they're doing it every few seconds when the fighters are takign shots at range. It doesn't quite seem like they're calling for action, as it tends to happen when an exchange ends and the fighters reset. What's up with that?

They use the 10 point must system, but it's customary to give the first round 10-10, and often the second as well. I heard that most of the officials are former fighters so they might be looking at very specific things in the application of technique, I dunno. If you're interested at all, Tony Myers has some stuff online about judging and refereeing MT here http://muaythaijudging.com/judging-muay-thai---overview.php and he has a PhD in MT judging (this is not a joke). Here's some of his research, a lot of which sort of revolves around trying to make judging and officiating better internationally https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3863918/ https://rua.ua.es/dspace/bitstream/10045/34419/1/jhse_Vol_8_N_III_761-777.pdf https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3442224/

If they're being liberal with 10-10s in the early rounds, the scoring I remember makes much more sense. There was one that had two close first rounds which i gave to blue, and then the last three were blue red red, with red winning by a wide margin in the last two. I remember going "Red wins by Pride rules but blue had it 3-2..." then Red got it, so I shrugged and clapped. I'll take a look at the reffing sites when I get a chance.

What's been explained to me is that in MT, the betting lines are open until the last round so a lot of what you see are dudes setting ranges and checking techniques until times to fight for realsies. I don't know if that's 100% accurate but fights I've watched tend to follow the same pattern.
