Not speaking any English worked really well when I was in China. At one point I had to ferry a bunch of classmates to Mutianyu Great Wall using a non-tourist route of several local buses. Every stop along the way a random guy would hop on through the back door and locate us. He'd shout in broken english that this stop RIGHT NOW is the one we want, probably so he could strand us into taking an expensive ride in a van or something. I shouted 不要 不要 back at them while everybody else in our group stayed silent.

God help you if you give any hint of what language you speak. They're 1000x more persistent once they confirm you're an English speaker.

That's bullshit. The government has no right or say in how people celebrate their dead guy parties. If some dude wants strippers at his dead guy party, then so be it. If he wants all his favorite KTV girls to appear and shake their booties one more time, why is it okay when he's alive, but not okay when he's dead?

Goddamn it I had a big thing here typed up about how disorganized pujas are but I hit ctrl-r instead of ctrl-t and it loving got lost.

Basically I've been to a lot and nobody ever knows what's going on because it's all in a mostly-dead language (Sanskrit) but unlike pre-Vatican II Catholicism, things seem to be half-improvised and depend largely on the particular pandit performing the puja. So you sit there on the floor while a guy talks as fast as he possibly can (pandits aren't hourly) and occasionally he puts flower petals, sugar, water, oil, flour, nuts, or a coconut in your hand and gestures frantically while you try to figure out if he wants you to eat it, put it on your head, throw it in the fire, set it in the growing pile of other poo poo on the floor, or what. At the end, he'll tie a red and yellow string around your wrist, which will stain your skin yellow and, after a shower, leave yellow marks on your bedsheets and undershirts; I have no loving clue how long you're supposed to leave this on but I generally take it off after 4-5 days when I can't stand it anymore.

Only aunties know the words to the arthis, and even they only seem to know the first parts, so it's sort of like if a baseball game opener did all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner and everybody just kind of mumbled along after the first.

The worst thing about a puja is when somebody fucks up making the prasad and it tastes really bad but you get given a giant pile of it anyway and have to eat the whole goddamn thing.

Realistically, there have been only four leaders after Mao: Deng, Jiang, Hu, and Xi. Deng personally picked Jiang and Hu to rule after him. So I guess the rules of succession that works best is "get picked by Deng Xiaoping."

Another way to look at this is that without a strongman pulling the strings behind the scenes, China's succession system could not last even one presidential term.

I use to regret emigrate out of China due to the recent economic development. watching all that infrastructure and night view of city make me wonder why my parent exile me to the barren frozen wasteland of Canada?

this is why

before xi at very least there some remembrance of government following some constitution (term limits , 9 Politburo Standing Committee member to veto and balance power) and the some discussion regard improving rights are allowed.

I knew Xi was strong man, he has his own personal agendas. at first I don't think he was not bad of leader.Maybe more competent than last one. but man today he did 2 things that my worst nightmare come true. first is getting rid of term limit and put his name in the Constitution. everyone here already discuss about. then he also add one for line 社会主义制度是中华人民共和国的根本制度。add this “中国共产党领导是中国特色社会主义最本质的特征。The constitution is more mutable than gently caress subforum rules in GBS.

Basically that the CPC is sole legal owner of china. they party is now filled with 2nd gen "princes" once who don't know is that there some other "parties" allowed from finding of country. it's just decoration but now they are not even pretending.

add to that Xi massive limit the power of the "Politburo Standing Committee " that has real power ("Standing Committee" has always paper weight but this is different) and have designed to balance out personal power. prevent poo poo like this to happen.

with the old rules, there was semi chance of sustainable party dictatorship, but now I think it's beginning the end. CPC hosed up. I know enough history to know what country would become once thing like this happen, it rarely last long and end with crash.

No term limits are good in a democracy, if it has a way other than voting out the party/leader out of position by the public and isn't completely tied to the ruling party. This is matched by the ability to call snap elections and dissolving government when it is clear the current arrangement unworkable. America has none of these so term limits came in as a band aid for the much deeper problems with the constitution.

I am not sure about Canada but if your right wing party is anything like ours or anywhere in the world its always a dumpster fire under a petrol station with a school on top. You, me, 1/2 this thread. . . . about 3-4 years ago?

I'm 99% positive that I pretty much outlined every single step he has taken up until this point (and beyond) at least 2 years ago.

Once he had the "anti-corruption" dept up and running, and made a few big-headline "feel-good" arrests, he had public support, and anyone who wanted to shut it down "must have had something to hide". Once he had ousted enough of Jiang Zemin's crew, he had the party locked down and the country in his palm. The sad thing is that you're not going to see or hear much dissent because it's either being instantly censored or people are too afraid to say anything.

My wife pretty much summed up the Chinese populace as follows...

1. The Wǔmáo: They are either in the party, or think it can do no wrong. These are the people who praise everything Uncle Xi does.
2. The Beneficiaries: These are the people who have benefited from the changes in the last decade, and want the good times to continue.
3. The Olds: They are pretty much devoid of any ability to think, and will just say whatever happens is good, even is it means they suffer.
4. The Indifferent: They don't care either way, and are usually ignorant about politics because of education, isolation, or just trying to survive.
5. The Helpless: They might not like what is happening, but know that there is nothing they can do to change things.
6. The Scared: They know that what is happening is wrong, but given CCP surveillance, they know that any dissent might destroy their future.
7. The Vocals: They shout out on the Internet or will complain to anyone who listens, but their posts are deleted and their shouts ignored.
8. The Activists: These are the people who protest, who try and fight the system, and if they get any sort of following, they get "disappeared".

Xie has created a juggernaut that isn't going to get derailed unless one of the following happens...

a. A conflict that results in unacceptable losses in people/resources/money
b. A natural disaster or environmental catastrophe that affects a lot of people or the economy enough that hardships are intolerable
c. An economic collapse that results in enough people losing everything and feeling desperate enough to start a revolution

Also, the Chinese version of the "American Dream" is still deeply rooted in a very large portion of the population. They're under the impression that they can swindle their way to the top, and if they just hang in there a little longer, their time will come. This is why apartments are still being traded back and forth like baseball cards, and why the lower classes are still putting their faith in the party, because they all know someone who made it big, and their chance is just around the corner. It's going to take another decade or even less before they realize that their ship has sailed long ago, and another one isn't coming.

Coolguye
Jul 6, 2011

Required by his programming!
c is still a lot closer than anyone would like to admit inside china. there's a reason that, of all the countries on the planet, only china has taken serious action to restrict and limit the flow and usage of cryptocurrencies. some places like korea might talk a big game, but fundamentally they take no action any stricter than the Americans or the Europeans who just want to call something that looks like a security and quacks like a security a security. nobody is scared of it. as long as that's done, people don't give a poo poo. but bitcoin scares the CCP so badly that they keep trying to push it out of the country completely. why's that?

could it in fact be because the chinese economy is largely one massive lie and exposing it to something other than the CCP's monopoly money could expose that?

no, of course not. then why?

no why.

Pretty much. The only reason the Cons lasted as long as they did the last time around was because Harper kept a tight leash on any social conservative bullshit while promoting himself as a strong, stable leader you could rely on. The Liberals, meanwhile (the so-called "natural ruling party of Canada") were a dumpster fire that got relegated to third-party status. The only thing I can credit the Conservatives with is that they did a drat good job getting votes with their immigrant outreach. No other right-wing party that I know of has done that.
