Which bothers you more, the fact that she's a woman or that she's Malay

Singapore president is ceremonial though isn't it, prime minister holds power

Singapore is ranked 14th on the rule of law index (higher than USA) with an independent judiciary cited as a model for developing countries

China is ranked 75th and a judiciary that ummmm

the difference between Singapore and China is that Singapore is a democracy where the ruling party enjoys massive incumbent advantages whereas China is a one party dictatorship that seems to be transitioning towards a personal dictatorship

to be blunt, I'm not sure how much of a problem I have with one party dictatorships given how well China has done in the last 35 years or so

personal dictatorships seem to always result in big big problems though

Caller to a Soviet radio program asks, “What is the average wage of an American manual worker?”

A long pause ensues.

Then the answer comes: “U nich negrov linchuyut” (“Over there they lynch Negroes”)

Back to Xi

for a while I was genuinely thinking that China had discovered the 'third way" (heh) between socialism and capitalism and a stable succession system was one of the key hallmark. China's state capitalist economy might provide a genuine alternative to free market capitalism for better or worse and maybe by 2050 or so China is humming along just fine. And a merit based succession system and institutional constrains on the general secretary/president solves the old "bad emperor" problem that plagued China for 3000 years or so.

Now China seems to be heading down the road to be just another generic dictatorship thanks to Emperor Xi's personal quest for power.

Well that was what a lot of Chinese believed too. Xi Shi Kai (I am going to call him that from now on) breaking the unwritten rules set by Deng will do a lot of demage to the stability of CCP and China.

Now nothing matters; old men in polibearueau no longer have a hard retirement limit, out going leaders no longer appoint the next-next leader; new leaders no longer get appointed but rather you have to fight for it like Game of Thrones; there is no more chack and balance inside CCP.

in the future, Deng-Jiang-Hu will be seen as the "three good confucian-socialist emperors" who made the country rich and prosperous while Xi will be the one who consorted with the Enunchs to bring down the dynasty in pursuit of his personal power

Also now even retired politburo members are up for prosecution for actions while in office: meaning there's a lot of incentive for people to never retire

after a generation of or so this is how a new gerontocracy gets created
