It's pretty good and I might buy it to bridge the gap caused by the 6 delay.

It's FOTNS so it's not gonna make any sense in any language so doesn't really matter if I can understand it or not, is my reasoning.

Outside of the occasional server connection stuttering or the framerate tanking for a moment if a game gets really intensive, I've been really happy with it.

The biggest issue is you need to save often. If your connection quality drops too hard (even if the game is still perfectly playable) they give you half a minute to save before they just shut the drat game off, with them assuming the game probably autosaved like a minute ago. Don't lose like 6+ hours of progress total like I did

Counter counter point: if I recall correctly, she also put guys in headlocks so that Kiryu could more thoroughly smash them. And I think occasionally kicked people. I haven't played the game on awhile so may be misremembering.

The really unfortunate part is that Sayama is the character that people look to when lamenting the poor treatment of women in this series, and it's only downhill from there. Do you remember the name of Kiryu's love interest in 5 without looking her up?

I don't even remember there being a love interest in 5. Hell, I don't remember there being any love interests beyond 2. The only woman I really remember is Hana.

I also forgot that Sayama was kidnapped, so I think I might be remembering Date scenes but replacing him with Sayama. I guess I really need to play 2 again.

I don't remember her name, but she was a hostess that cooked, cleaned, did his laundry, and he was weirdly volcel about the whole thing.

Edit: Huh. Went back to look up and see if I was remembering correctly, and I'd completely forgotten that she was planted on Kiryu by the Tojo, she was the local patriarch's daughter, and she was somewhere between a minder, a spy, a facilitator, and a long-term escort.

The only love interest I saw in 5 (after reading up on it) was Mirei. And that ended horribly because of the abortion she did in secret.

Same. I think I quit by the time Akiyama was introduced, and then I bought a PS4 and never booted my 3 up again, so never went back. I really wish there had been either a bit more variety or just overall less of Harkua's section, because that burnt me out pretty quick.

Dude Harkuka’s section was a loving blast after how insanely boring Saejima was

5's biggest pacing problem is barely anything of plot relevance happens in the middle three chapters. Each character's story feels very disconnected and self contained until the end.

It was a lot of fun until I realized that I'd be singing the same 3 songs over and over again, and there were only I think 4 dance battle songs. The changeup was nice, but they should've given you the option to switch between her and Akiyama earlier, IMO.

That said, the manzai sketch substory was one of my favorites, and the songs were catchy and the rhythm game was fun to play. It's by no means bad, but Saejima's section already had made my interest wane. Haruka's section was just what did me in. I just didn't have the patience anymore.

Zero going back to only 2 locations and protagonists was honestly a breath of fresh air, and I'm very much looking forward to Just Kiryu 6.

Yeah, Yakuza 5 killed most of my enthusiasm for having a ton of protagonists. I'd rather have 1 or 2 (preferably 1) done very well with a ton of different styles than 4 or 5 different dudes that struggle for the spotlight. Seriously how many people even remember baseball guy?

To be honest, I sometimes wonder how different 5 would be if Tanimura's VA didn't get cocaine allegations.

That said, uhhhhhh what was 4 or 5 about again

1 was the 10 billion yen missing, 2 was Tojo Clan vs Omi Alliance to a point, and 3 was about a resort deal designed to hide a military base in Okinawa.

At least from my memory of watching their respective final fights and maybe some extra research.

Never heard about that, geez. Just one more reason why we're never getting the Tanimura/Date/Sayama buddy cop spin-off.

widespread posted:

4 was the Tojo Clan being pitted against the Ueno Seiwa, iirc. 5's setup was that the Omi's chairman was dying and the Tojo Clan needed to get its poo poo together to avoid a war, a plan that would be much more sound if it didn't revolve around Daigo not being a gently caress-up.

Poops Mcgoots

5 also had that third secretive family that wasn't really Yakuza at all. Like, I struggle to remember how baseball guy's story relates to the larger plot aside from him being childhood friends with daigo.

Everyone should play DUKE games.

:dukedog:
I missed it the first time, but the sub story in Zero where you help a dominatrix become more assertive and she inadvertently invents the concept of tsundere is loving amazingly written. It's both funny and the way all of the writing building up to it clicks all at once at once when she's like "not that I'd care if you came back or anything!" at the end is perfect. I know some of the slang and profanity in the game doesn't quite come off as "humans spoke like this in 1988" but my wife and I both busted a gut laughing at how that played out and this is seriously one of the funniest games I've ever played. Like god drat this game is just amazing.

I still have to get Ishin. :(

I kind of wish the PSP didn't dissolve so fast into a system people in Japan only got for Monster Hunter and visual novels because it has a bunch of great oddball games like those Yakuza titles on it that are never going to appear anywhere again.
