But also, the closest thing Norway has had to a School shooting was a crazy old lady pretty close to Tøyen School who was waving a knife at a little girl. The cop shot her in the leg and the she got the help she needed.

Breivik is our only real shame when it comes to this sort of thing. That still stings but at least we can make fun of his suffering now.

Arming teachers is such a bad idea for so many reasons.

What if a teacher loses their temper and uses their gun on a student? What if an angry student gets the gun away from one of their teachers? High schools are already a high stress environment, I don't think adding deadly weapons would calm things down.

It’s like the people who support arming teachers don’t understand the modern concept of employment at all, not just in education. If you want an employee to do something new, no matter what it is, and be square with work contracts and the law and stuff, there’s difficult planning to be done.

Isn't this how 1936 American media covered the 1936 Olympics?

Check out the last paragraph:

Skimming their archive, NYT did cover the fight in the Amateur Athletic Union over boycotting the Olympics, mostly in bottom-of-page snippets, but giving a fairly big headline to the text of their resolution opposing participation. Oddly, there's a lot of "Pastor so-and-so said this about the Olympics in his sermon on Sunday..." snippets. I guess that's a thing that got reported back then? In any case, here's the most notable article on that page:

Meanwhile, in the Washington Post, AP articles like:

or:

quote:

Some extremists advocate shifting the games to another country. They are, however, uninformed about the complicated Olympic system. It takes at least three years to prepare the setup for the quadrennial games. The structure cannot be shifted on short notice. If the 1936 games are not held in Berlin, they likely will not be held at all. Any attempt to move them, in fact, would precipitate the bitterest kind of an athletic conflict, dwarfing even the current manifestation of ill-feeling.
[...]
The Olympics are not awarded to a country or a national government, but specifically to a city. Thus the 1932 games were awarded to Los Angeles, not to the United States. The American Government had no part in the bidding, arrangements or conduct of the games. Thus it is not with the Hitler government, but with the city of Berlin that international Olympic authorities deal now, in preparation for the 1936 games. Unfortunately, perhaps, the distinction is thinly invisible to outsiders.

I mean, calling them "hypothetical" is kind of selling it short I think. These aren't really "in theory this could happen" scenarios, these are things that are almost certain to happen given enough time. Someone will try to steal a teacher's gun. A teacher will have a breakdown and shoot someone (or themselves). An accidental discharge will wound or kill someone. Given enough armed teachers and enough time these are pretty much statistical locks.

The rest of the point is well-taken though: what will individual teachers and schools and school districts need to have insurance-wise if they did this? How do you make policy for when teachers are allowed to use a weapon, how it can or can't be carried or stored, what kinds of weapons are allowed, weapons inspections, tests for firearms proficiency, and on, and on. And no one actually proposing the bullshit seems to have any real thoughts on those things - they're just reflexively going "more guns = more better" without taking any time to figure out how to do it.

And that's of course to say nothing of what a nightmare it'll be for first responders. When you've got a couple dozen people with guns running around, and most shootings get reported as being by multiple shooters at first because of echoes and confusion, how do you know that one or more of the school employees aren't the shooter? How do you even begin to secure anything? It's literally insane.

Even the name "pledge of allegiance" is just a blur of sounds and we don't generally think about it. "plejuva leejence" is like "elemenopee"

I'm not apologizing for it or anything, it's an archaic gross thing that should be abolished, but most kids aren't very indoctrinated by it beyond a vague sense that the flag is important to adults. In fact, by middle school it's already uncool to recite it and the cool kids just stand silently. This may vary based on how much camouflage is being worn in the classroom at the time.

At a more prosaic level, I want to be thinking about teaching while I'm with my students. The last thing I need is the psychological stress of carrying a deadly weapon. I don't want to spend all my time thinking about what to do in case a shooter comes into the building. I've always been the type to think of worst case scenarios and spend time planning what to do in a crisis. I have planned what I would do if a gunman came into the building (I wonder if the windows are breakable), but having a gun on me would make it impossible to focus on just teaching.

Fundamentally, conservatives don't believe that there are problems that have to be addressed on a societal level. Instead of dealing with the mass of guns in the country, we expect individuals to solve them. We can't say that it's too easy to get guns, instead we say that there should be more armed people who will heroically save the day. If there was a security guard who didn't stop it, we argue about what the guard could have done differently rather than acknowledge that it never should have gotten to the point where one old man with a pistol is the only thing between hundreds of kids and a psychopath with a rifle.
