I miss diving, it's been years :smith:. I haven't gotten to meet the giant kind, but the little ones are fun. One of my favorites lived in a little cave right off the end of the docks at this resort I was staying at. He didn't want to play, and he was about a foot and a half across, but he was clearly fascinated by humans.

If I was diving or snorkeling right off the dock I'd always pop over to his cave to see if he was in, and if he was he always came out and followed me the whole time. He would follow along a few feet away and keep changing his colors to blend in while he spied on me.

EDIT: Rexie got a new dress today :3:

Giant cuttlefish are about a metre long and just sort of hover there like spaceships, silently judging you.

Last year I dived on the cuttlefish spawn off the coast of South Australia. You could easily snorkel it as most of the action is in less than 2m of water. Cold water, but beautiful clear skies so you warmed up quick when you got out.
Anyway, they were all about the size of a small to medium sized dog at most, but every direction you looked you could see at least 20 of them. Unfortunately you don't see a lot of different behaviours as they are really only there for one thing. But you're right about them being like spaceships - just totally alien.

I read somewhere that some scientists are seriously wondering just how smart octopodes could get if they had longer lifespans. They're so alien that it's tough to get a handle on them as it is.

I read an article late last year about a colony that had formed where they were teaching the octokids. This isn't a thing that happened before because they are normally solitary and die after giving birth. We could be seeing the rise of the octolords!

Different species. The common reef cuttlefish are the size you’re thinking of. The Aussie cuttlefish are the giant ones.

So a grizzly raised by a human actually knows it's own strength enough not to be dangerous to play with(assuming no actual attack ever happens of course)? Like, in that little clip the bear starts teething on the guys hand for a second, it knows how hard it can bite without hurting him? Or it knows how dangerous it's claws are and is careful not to accidentally gash him with them?

I guess most animals come with that instinct just from handling their own babies.

I'd say it's more that they learn to distinguish between what's fun roughhousing vs what's painful/dangerous by play fighting.

The cat I'm taking care of was dumped as a kitten so she never had the chance for her siblings to teach her that sinking your teeth into someone is super not cool. Either that or the back of my calves are just delicious as hell.

Edit: A slightly less ferocious kitty

I am going through this with my puppy. I am having to teach him the difference between rough housing with my other dog and not rough housing with me. When he nips me I act like he just bit my hand off and he starts licking me and head butting me to say sorry :3:

A friend of mine tells a story of an uncle who rescued a cub and kept him as he grew up. The boys of the family would wrestle with the bear as a cub, and he learned that wrestling with men was fun. Fast forward to a grown brown bear, women could enter his pen safely, but men would risk playful flesh wounds in the name of fun.

Don't know if it's exactly cute or not, but Wojtek is my favorite bear story

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wojtek_(bear)

quote:

In August the bear was donated to the 2nd Transport Company, which later became the 22nd Artillery Supply Company, and he was given the name Wojtek by the soldiers.

Wojtek initially had problems swallowing and was fed with condensed milk from an old vodka bottle. He was subsequently given fruit, marmalade, honey and syrup, and was often rewarded with beer, which became his favourite drink. He later also enjoyed smoking (or eating) cigarettes. He loved wrestling with the soldiers and was taught to salute when greeted. Wojtek became quite an attraction for soldiers and civilians alike, and soon became an unofficial mascot of all units stationed nearby. With the 22nd Company he moved to Iraq and then through Syria, Palestine and Egypt.

To get him onto a British transport ship when the unit sailed with the rest of the Polish II Corps from Egypt to fight alongside the British 8th Army in the Italian campaign, Wojtek was officially drafted into the Polish Army as a Private and was listed among the soldiers of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company. Henryk Zacharewicz and Dymitr Szawlugo were assigned as his caretakers.

As an enlisted soldier of the company, with his own paybook, rank and serial number, he lived with the other men in tents or in a special wooden crate, which was transported by truck. According to numerous accounts, during the Battle of Monte Cassino Wojtek helped by carrying 100-pound crates of 25-pound artillery shells, all without dropping a single one. In recognition of the bear's popularity, the HQ approved a depiction of a bear carrying an artillery shell as the official emblem of the 22nd Company.

It's usually not hard to teach a cat (or dog) what the limits of play are. For cats, you want to make a short, high pitched squeak/cry, as if you were a kitten in pain. If possible, socially separate yourself from the cat for about 30 seconds just after, don't look at it or respond/interact with it. This isn't always going to work, some pets are just assholes, or have a history of being abused that cannot ever be undone, but if you try to communicate in away a cat will understand, I've found most of them respond really well. :)
