windows build 1709: turning off ads in the start menu by gpo is now reserved for enterprise sku only. if you had that gpo set in pro, we've re-enabled them for you.

p.s. unless you've completely disabled the user's ability to personalize the start menu, we've cleared all the pinned apps and re-pinned all our promoted bullshit in its place.

p.p.s. we've also helpfully reset all your customized app defaults

how does it actually work? im curious. i never detect any sort of lag or quick flicker of the metro start menu. does it like completely replace the startmenu.exe or some poo poo? doesn't seem like it "runs on top"

and i'm not denying that MS sucks for making me resort to having to use an alternative start menu btw

apparently the author didn't want to chase microsoft issuing a new version every six months anymore

and despite the date on the sourceforge the most recent version is for old windows 10

and there hasn't been a new binary for it on the sourceforge since then

yeah it's probably going to get bad soon

classic shell on win8 is understandable. no one should have their whole screen hidden by garbage win they press winkey.

but why use it on win10?

my windows if free from such problems, tyvm. just detach everything and call it a day, an icon of two may appear twice per year with a service pack, but it also may not

The best thing about windows 8 was the "charms" that only popped out when you dragged the mouse pointer to the lower right corner

Literally nobody could figure out how to turn off their computers after upgrading because the button was part of the charms menu

remember how they touted that windows 8 would finally ship with a pdf reader, and then it turned out to be some hell garbage fullscreen metro poo poo that kicked you out of the desktop making it useless for anyone who actually needed to reference pdfs while working?

win 8 was like a game where you had to carefully tiptoe around the desktop trying not to inadvertently trigger something that would throw you into metro tile hell.

w8 existed solely for microsoft's push into the tablet space, where it was an even bigger loving trashfire than on the desktop

the ui was still loving awful for every task, but also all the background cruft that comes with windows ensured your tablet ran like poo poo 100% of the time and had a standby battery life comfortably measured in minutes.
