drat. Got to the OA last year but didn't pass the FSOT this year, because the new situational judgment part destroyed me. I increased my English and job knowledge scores by 6 and 9 respectively but bombed the situations badly enough I was a single point below cutoff.

I have no idea how I can study for this. It seems fairly subjective as to which answer is right

Yep. Passed with a big score last year but got a 3 on the essay so didn't move on. This year, I barely passed with a 158 but got an 8 on the essay. Last year I wrote it as a straightforward business memo, and this year I said gently caress it and wrote it as a high school five-paragraph persuasive paper.

Oh, he was just arbitrarily saying stuff.
The candidate process has changed a lot over the years. I sometimes wonder if current FSOs can get hired under the new hiring process. I mean, even the QEP didn't exist until about 10-15 years ago.

Just keep on taking the test, and never take any step of the process for granted.

With the experience I have now? Yeah, probably. If I had to take the same test offered now when I tested in 2006? lolno

I mean, anecdotally there are enough stories of people answering almost exactly the same between years and having different results, to imply that it's a total crapshoot and hiring vs. attrition plays probably as great of a role as your personal performance/strength as a candidate.

Is there any real way for me to get feedback on my background investigation process? I spent a lot of time overseas in remote areas and stuff so I know it will take a while, but it's been about 6 months and I really want someone to just say "Hey you haven't slipped through the cracks", but e-mailing and calling hasn't got me anything but silence or a voice mail and my HR guy just redirects me back to them.

I would like to thank whichever kind, high-ranking goon called into the FBI to yell at them for not responding to my emails, because I woke up this morning to a response from the investigations division stating that everything was still being processed as normal.

What saves a man is to take a step. Then another step. It is always the same step, but you have to take it.
I was always told to email securityclearance@state.gov to get updates. No idea if it still works. My advice is to completely forget about it, you didn't slip through cracks, yes it really takes that long. When things happen, they'll happen.

poo poo, it took them eight months just to sit me down for my security clearance renewal.

They were incredibly fast between time of interview>SF-86 submission>personal interviews and interviewing people close to me, but after that it was just radio silence for 6 months. I don't expect it to be finished anytime soon but I just wanted to know that everything was still proceeding as it should. I started graduate school like a week after I interviewed for the job and I remember thinking "I really hope I can get through at least a year of grad school before anything happens", which looking back seems laughably optimistic. At this point I've moved my time frame more to "I hope something happens before 2020".

Yeah gonna give the FSOT another shot in June I think, the fact that there was a 50% drop in applicants makes it more appealing.

Keep in touch with a few but largely because we work in the same AORs. The ones I liked to hang out with socially have left State.

We had 20 in my Specialist class, really tight with 6, so much that we meet up in a different country every now and then. But friendly and still talk to everyone periodically.

Good to see that everything is back to normal.
After 16+ years, about 1/3 of my class has retired/resigned/etc. Many of us still keep in touch and now find ourselves working together (remotely, if not physically) at the almost-upper-middle-management level.

Oh, and we try to make sure good people get good jobs.

Our class is maybe 10% no longer in the FS, and the email on our class listserv has dropped off quite a bit, but there are still periodic meetups when people are in DC. Since leaving the FS I've met up with a few others for dinner/drinks, so I wouldn't say we "splintered off", we're definitely still in touch.

That said there are a handful of people from A-100 who I literally have not heard from in 5+ years.

Some of the other IMSes who were with me have a list of like ten posts to choose from, but I'm actually in a pretty good position. I'd just hit 18 months at post, and was scheduled to depart around August to get to my next post in Yerevan in September.

Instead I may be able to go in July. Yerevan was excited that I may get there early, since the guy I'd be replacing leaves in June. Since I'm over 18 months I don't have any problems with taking home leave. So nothing really changes that much for me, it's just a little earlier than planned.
