They are in airbases, well supplied hexes. Torpedoes on.

BUGGER ALL HAPPENS!

The checklist of things to make them fly:

1. Are they in undamaged airbases of size 3 or higher with decent supply?
2. Are they in high morale (greater than 50)?
3. Do you have detection levels on enemy transports?
4. Do you have an Air HQ at the airbase that has a stash of torpedoes? (if the "using torpedoes" is red they're not getting any supplied)
5. Do you have air superiority in the target hexes?

I'm pretty sure the AI gets to cheat these requirements, which is why AI Betties always seem to be the long-range fist of god while your own barely get off the ground.

There are a number of reports in matrix forum AARs about the importance of detection levels on planes sorties, and even on naval combat. Given how fiddly that is, it’s probably a tough thing to do right.

Basically, Unit 731 was a secret part of the IJA, working on biological and bacteriological weapons. Thing is, they experimented on human, and live, specimens. Most of them were Chinese, Korean or Russian people captured, but some Western POWs ended up as ''marutas'' (literally ''piece of wood'', guinea pigs in this case) too. Experiments were things like draining almost all of the blood in someone's body, willingly infecting them with plague and other diseases and watch it's evolution closely, vivisection, freezing people's limbs before breaking them...this sort of things.

For the little story, after the war, Douglas Mac Arthur made a deal with the chiefs of Unit 731. He would make sure they never get in front of a trial, and cover up their story, if they gave him the data of their reasearches. They did, and most of those who ''worked'' in the Unit never got punished and died peacefully. Except for 12 of them, who got caught and trialed by the Soviets.

The stuff 731 did was horrifically monstrous - but a fair chunk of it was also fairly valuable medical data (that was basically unattainable stuff at the time for above stated reason) that probably advanced a number of fields a significant amount. It's not a case of the "science experiments" that the Nazis were doing on people that were generally nothing of the sort.

Not that MacArthur wasn't indeed a really lovely person for any number of reasons, but the pardon in exchange for the research data remains in an incredibly gray area, since there was an actual benefit to the pardon.

Should've pardoned them, gotten the data, then charged them with jaywalking and sentenced them to be shoved feet first into a blast furnace.

The japanese AI gets to magically draw planes from thin air to refill squadrons every 7 days (provided the rules for supplies and airbase size/air HQ is met).
I'm not sure if the Allied AI has the same loophole or if it's stuck with the historical numbers.

The only ways to supress a large Japanese AI airfield is to blockade it so it doesn't get supplies in, or keep it bombed to rubble constantly.
Or make sure there's no enigneer units there, Japanese land units have a lot less organic engineer squads than the allies, and only enigneer squads can repair airfield damage.

One thing to note is that while it's impossible to stop the AI from hilariously overproducing Betties and Sallys to meet demand, The AI is still limited in the number of skilled pilots it can train. If you shoot down that many Betties, you'll notice that their combat ability drops significantly, and the morale of the individual squadrons will plummet due to the losses, which will lead to most strikes turning back before reaching the target. Thus, it's really just a source of free VPs that might occasionally hit a transport or something slow.

The "only if the conditions for normally drawing reinforcements applies" mechanic also helps. If you can suppress an airbase and its supply line the way you doctrinally should, then it still works.

Bold Robot

What I've been doing so far in the Solomons in my game is just letting my CAP handle the waves after waves of unescorted Betties, etc., then suppressing their airbases before any major operations. I've got Moresby and Luganville built up into large airbases and every 4-engine bomber I can spare set on airfield attack when I'm moving ships around.

Bummer they won't run out of Betties, but good to know their pilots will gradually get shittier. The Japanese are already not doing very well against my guys in October 42, I've got like a 4:1 k:d ratio in the air.

I remember reading a story or a short book about either that research or similar done by a doctor. Scarred my teenage mind. Those guns are murdering us. I've no idea why their fire is being so much more effective here!

We punish an attack by one of the carrier groups that is constantly circling the area.

That was a really dull day full of bombing runs on the same old targets that did nothing.

Good think it's graph time!

Things look bad for the AI, they should be rapidly appraching parity with me, but they are still riding the bump of taking out the carriers. Although the rate of score change may have gone up a bit.

I was taking high value target after high value target at this stage, they are floudering on bloody atolls.

Neither side has brought the thunder in the air war.

The Allies can do nothing to match the sheer butchery I've been handing out to them for the last two and a bit years.

They've lost more ships than even I did.

The difference in value of those ships is also ridiculous. It's a cliff back in late '42.

Our subs are doing well at the moment.

Allies in unsuccessful attack [shock]er. I always enjoy seeing the “survivors seek cover message.”

Most of the day seems to spent tabbing through waves of planes hitting Munda to little effect.

Oscars and Nates vs Spitfires is not a fair match. Poor buggers.

They keep on giving it a go though!

The only thing I hate more than this is the ground combat engine.

The afternoon brings more death for our pilots.
