New dev update!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK1kExEcf34

The in-game challenges will be working in the next version (which should be out tomorrow), and it goes into the facelift mechanic for the light campaign (which will be coming soon still in a big update).

EDIT: Oh yeah, a new challenge, run by the devs is coming soon too...more information tomorrow!

OK, here is the competition - the first (official) car design competition, featuring Mr. Regular (of Regular Car Reviews fame) as one of the judges!

Well the design competition is now over; there were 453 entries submitted across the 11 different categories. I managed to get entries in for everything except for the Crazy Car category, and I hope some of you did too! Here's what I entered:

Category A - 40s Luxo-Barge

Category B - 50s Family Car, Euro Style

Category C - 60s Muscle Car (also formed the basis of my car ad for the ad competition)

Category D - 70s Roadster/Light Sport

Category E - 80s Premium

Category F - 90s Fun/Hot Hatch

Category G - 00s SUV/Pickup

Category H - 10s Hypercar

Category X - 2025 Premium Concept

If anyone else entered, I'd love to see your designs!

Which one was yours? Mine was a bit too heavy and a bit too premium in that category.

I'm doing pretty well in the competition so far! Four cars in the final judging, which is far better than I expected to be honest.

Most of the meat of the thread are the judging videos; as of today, we are still in the preliminaries, where the cars are just graded simply to see who moves on to the category finals, and there are still three categories to go. Here are the videos so far (hope you've got some time on your hands!):

Category A - 40s Luxo Barge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KmXKtVAbkg

Category B - 50s Family Car, Euro-Style
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE7xZCEFd0M

Category C - 60s Muscle Car
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwEsThRa5Zg

Category D - 70s Roadster/Light Sport
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpnzaYOiT4o

Category E - 80s Premium
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-Nm5K2Q1cc

Category F - 90s Hot Hatch/Fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMLN6S9COD0

Category G - 00s Utility/Pickup
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-tDRv20H7E

Tomorrow's video is for Category H (2010s Hypercar), then Category X (2025 Premium concept), Category Y (Crazy/Creative Category) on Friday and finally the collaboration video with RCR for Category R (Car Ads) on Saturday. After that, the final judging begins, and it will be a lot more in-depth than what we've seen already.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I made the finals in the 60s, 70s, 00s and 10s as well. Realistically, I think the only category I have a good chance to win is the 60s; my design was the only one to score an 8 in the preliminaries in that one, but on the other hand we've seen with the 50s designs that lower-scoring cars from the prelims don't always score so low in the finals.

OK, yeah actually that was pretty much just tooting my own horn :v:

I really hate some of the scoring in this game, just because I'm not really sure how to interpret it. How do I know what a good smoothness score for an engine is? Are all scores like that in this game on a scale of 0-100?

Q_res posted:

The answer is...it depends.

Smoothness is on a scale from 0 to 100, but each demographic segment has a different preference for what they would consider to be adequate. For example, demographics such as Delivery, or the budget demographics, might not care if the smoothness is in the 25-30 range (of note; there is apparently no demographic that accepts anything less than 25 smoothness). Contrast that with the high-end, luxury demographics, who stop penalising you at 60 smoothness.

So, how do you make your engine smoother? Well, unusually large engines will start to be penalised beyond a certain size (1.5L for inline-3s, 2.8L for inline-4s, and I think above 4L for V6s), for one, and certain layouts, like 90-degree V6s and 60-degree V8s, will suffer a penalty compared to their siblings with a more natural V-angle. Adding quality sliders will help with smoothness too (though it's very expensive), and running lower cam settings will also make an engine run smoother (especially if it doesn't have variable valve timing).

Really, the best way to figure this out is to experiment a little; in the Markets tab right at the end of the build screens, it should tell you how much of a desirability penalty your engine smoothness is incurring.

We're fucking built for this shit!
Yeah this concern came up because I recently mocked up a couple off-beat engine designs. A present day 2.5L I-3 DOHC 12-valve with a 4500 rpm rev limited that has the most hilarious diesel-esque torque curve, and a 4.9L SOHC 24-valve 60-degree V-8.

The I-3 has a Smoothness of 14.1 and the V8 was at 56.4, and I usually don't mess with the quality settings right now. But I did have to crank up the quality on the I-3 to get it even where I did.

Real life engineering, smoothness is first and foremost about how balanced the engine is in operation. Inline engines are pretty inherently unsmooth, and inline 3's even more so because the forces the engine experiences are uneven. The only smooth inline is the 6. I mean theoretically so is an inline 8, but nobody uses those anymore. (This is why semi trucks use inline 6's, by the way, it's naturally balanced, and also has the smallest block mass and internal friction). V engines are generally smoother because they have more pistons, but an inline 6 is going to be smoother than a V6, because the V6 still has the unbalanced forces issue. So does a V8 really, but I4 is better than I3, and a V8 is better than a V6. You cannot have a fundamentally balanced engine below 6 cylinders unless you use something like a flat engine design.

This is all just the natural tendencies of the engine though. There are engineering tricks you can do, like adding a harmonic balancer, carefully picking and milling parts to be more precisely weighted against each other, etc, which would be equivalent to raising the quality slider.

Oh no, I get all that. I knew the 3 banger would be a paint shaker. Was sort of the point, wanted to see if I could even make it functional. I just wasn't sure how to evaluate the score for the V8.

Then I started thinking about sleeve valves and aero engines in general. it's be cool if down the track we could play around with piston aero engines in different configs.

Then I started thinking about how cool a plane designer version of Automation would be! Design your own aero engines, play with oddball layouts, market to the military or just make passenger haulers. Blimps!
